Battery Explodes?!?

My friend has a 95 Eclipse GS-T

He started it and the battery exploded?

What could cause it to explode like that?

I think if the terminals are mixed up, that can happen

nope wasn't that, the terminals hasn't been switched since the battery was removed over a year ago (he's not a tuner, stock car)

Hydrogen gas released from the battery, combined with a spark will epxplode.

Usually the battery is vented enough to not have this problem.

Yes as a battery is CHARGED H2 gas is released as a chemical by-product of the charging process. Usually this only occurs when you have the battery on a battery charger, and after charging you short the the jumper cables and create a spark, and boom if the area is not well vented. I would look for possible shorts that could be sparking!
