Devistatix updated Bae.ser

Early stages of current project.

completed:
engine removed
head tore down
block tear down (in progress)
stripping down bay (in progress)
cleaning (in progress)

plans:
pull harness and modify some wiring/delete some things
paint engine bay
rebuild head and block
paint engine
battery relocation (trunk)

replace:
inner and outer tie rods
sway bar endlinks
all chassis bushings
drive shaft input (OEM recall kit)
clutch
flywheel
main seals
belts/waterpump, etc
...almost every bolt, hose, and vacuum line
probably a bunch of other stuff i'm forgetting to list

dash... i was going to hold off on this, but i destroyed the heater core, while pulling off the hoses.. i guess replacing the dash will also make it easier to fix my wiring, since i'll be able to just pull the entire harness, which will also make painting the bay easier. it's going to be a lot more time and work, but the end result will be more satisfying :)

updated my parts list.. everything in the pending lists, are things that are getting ready to be installed. i'll probably be adding a lot more to these lists in the next few weeks LOL

Lol, forgive my random-ass question but did you have anything particular in mind with that build name? I know a little bit of French so it caught my attention

edit: Also, did you do the AWD conversion on it, or did it came like that from the factory? I actually don't have any clue whether Lasers ever came stock with AWD. I only know they came in FWD N/A and FWD Turbo. Either way, you've got a cool unique build going :)!

1gB came AWD. 1ga were only FWD turbo :( Which brings to the rarity L O L Hard to find car fo shooo

sorry for the late reply. didnt see these comments

the name is just a play on words... bae (american slang for babe) and laser LOL

the awd is factory :)

pics incoming!

i apologize if these pictures are not posting in chronological order.... and no, i'm not the blonde LOL. that's my girlfriend, helping me out :)

this set is from end of april to mid may. february, the car sat mostly untouched, due to work... a bit of background.... i have NEVER gone this far into a vehicle before (the furthest ive been into a vehicle, prior to starting this endeavor, was taking a valve cover off). i have no training, other than what i have learned up to this point from reading and friends. i am diving into this project head first and learning everything as i go!

lots of sanding and grinding.. just... grueling hours, sore backs, and sore hands... i actually lost my job, due to trying to juggle sleep (i was working grave shift) and working on the car. my landlord was getting antsy about garage space. my goal was to get the vehicle back on the ground, so i could roll her out by the end of may (as an agreement i was kinda forced into making).

removed heater core, dash, subframe, brake lines, wire harness (to an extent.. i didnt feel like dealing with the driver side harness, so i left that disconnected, yet still attached to the car), basically anything and everything that i could get out of the way! got all the paint down to bare metal, using a wire wheel on a corded drill, orbital sander, and a box of sandpaper. knocked everything down with 80 grit on the orbital. used the wire wheel for hard to reach places and seam sealer. got my hands dirty with 400grit sandpaper to hit the corners andeven harder to reach areas. last stage of this prep was done with 220 on an orbital and red scotchbrite pads. i used a grinder to cut off the brackets for the factory coolant reservoir and charcoal canister.

cleaned the entire surface with acetone. (acetone does not leave residue after it fast evaporates, or so i was told)

seam sealer... oh man.... this stuff is a pain in the ass... my first application came out like boogers and i made a huge mess of the stuff, all over my hands and clothes... during the 24 hour cure process, i kept staring at my seam lines and became very displeased with my work. waited till it cured... then stripped all the seam sealer and went for round 2. helpful tip i was given: dip your fingers in acetone or lacquer thinner after setting your bead. let it sit for a few minutes, and then work the bead with your fingers. this method was much more time consuming, but i soon found the reward, after everything was painted.

once the second try at the seam sealer was complete.. VERY carefully smoothed out a few of the seam sealer lines with my orbital and some hand sanding.... and again cleaned the entire surface with acetone, as well as dupli-color paint prep spray. hung up a bunch of plastic. and priming commences

1st stage of priming... dupli-color self-etching

laid down 2 coats (took roughly 6 cans, if i can remember correctly)

I'm doing all my painting with rattle cans because i do not have a compressor or spray gun.

2nd stage of priming... dupli-color filler

2 coats... 6 cans

undercoating on the wheel wells... duplicolor undercoat w/ sound deadening

1 coat... 1 1/2 cans. i might add another coat or 2, depending on how well this stuff holds out after the car is back on the road. this stuff smells absolutely HORRIBLE! LOL

stage 3 and 4... COLOR AND CLEAR!!! (2nd half of may)

surprisingly... the cans of chrysler's radiant fire, from dupli-color... are harder to find than their other shades of red. i was able to snag 4 cans from o'rileys, that had to be shipped over from Seattle (I'm in Portland, OR). and had to order 2 more from ebay. pressed for time, i was unable to get 2 more cans (the duplicolor perfeect match cans are 8oz instead of 12oz, like their other paint cans). the realization of my lack of paint is what prompted me to go with the undercoating for the wheel wells. the 6 cans barely were enough paint to get the coverage that i wanted.... i hope i don't regret this in the near future... we shall see

2 coats... 6 cans (painted just the engine compartment)

for clear coat, i used dupli-color's hi-temp engine enamel paint with ceramic. my initial idea was that the hi-temp clear would help protect my color, under daily driving conditions and also protecting the color from chemicals and gas. i'm new to paints, so i hope this was not a bad choice. i know it isn't the "proper" choice... i will soon find out the answer...

3 coats... 4 cans (the coats were applied very light.. clear is much more prone to running)

The main subframe was also colored and cleared in the same manor, but with dupli-colo's perfect match chrysler brilliant black pearl.

two days after spraying the color and clear.. and mounting up the subframe, a hot day caused the gas in my tank to expand, leaking out of the fuel lines into the bay... all over the subframe.... immediately stripping my fresh paint!!! (turns out that hi-temp paint takes 5 days to fully cure) this happened with 3 days to my deadline to get the car out of the garage. we'll have to fix it once the car is in the driveway... if only i had not just mounted that subframe up... a blessing in disguise, this event pushed me to make the decision to reclear everything with urethane. a friend of mine offered to bring his spray gun and provide the clear. i just need to find a compressor to borrow. better this happened now and not after everything has been installed! time to pull the wire harness back out...

head and crank are sent off to the shop

massive shout out to my buddy, dathan... without him, i would have been totally f***ed in this endeavor. we changed all my inner and outer tie rods, sway bar links, bushings (energy suspension... control arms, subframe, sway bar, front sway bar [kit from jnz]) and both front wheel bearings. i would have been completely lost without his help. we changed both bearings without a press. with the help of a welder, a torch, some grinding drill bits, skilsaw, hammers, a broken tire iron, pieces of the old bearings, and a few blocks of wood, we had everything reassembled within 2 days... 1 day before i had to have all my shit out of the garage!

during downtime from working on the suspension, i painted a few other pieces... engine mounts, cowl vents, brake booster, etc etc... there is still a long road ahead for painting.....

car is rolled out into the driveway... subframe paint is repaired... garage cleaned out.. all my parts are now in my room... it's chaos... my cats are pissed

All of June, to this day, has consisted of more sanding, more cleaning, and more painting... every bit of rust, oil, grime, and dirt is being eliminated. power steering pump is going through a full rebuild. found that my turbo ate something rubber (how? i have no idea.. but the fins are chipped and my innercooler was filled with little bits of black rubber)... so the turbo is getting rebuilt, as well. i wish i took more pictures of this progress, but i've been so caught up trying to juggle this along with other things, that i keep forgetting... doh!

brilliant black pearl on all my miscellaneous brackets, cowl, power steering pump reservoir and outlet (inlet?.. can't remember right now), spark cover

hi-temp semi gloss black on the engine and trans mounts (that are actually mounted to the block and trans... the mounts with the prothane inserts are brilliant black pearl), intake manifold, wastegate, and will eventually be used on the head and block before assembly.

hi-temp cast aluminum on metal hoses/lines for power steering and coolant, valve cover, turbo inducer housing... possibly painting the timing cover too (or brilliant black pearl.. have not yet decided)

i tracked down a compressor to use, thanks to our awesome facebook community (pdx dsm), and will have everything cleared with urethane this weekend. the anticipation of seeing this thing assembled is driving me crazy!!! once everything gets a new coat of clear, i can start installing parts while the head and crank are still at the machine shop.

my closet is full of freshly painted hanging parts... i emptied out my desk drawers for painted parts... shit is just everywhere right now! this car has become my life since this year started... i need to get a new job ASAP LOL

funny enough... i looked up baiser (i think that was what you were referring to?)... i guess kiss/f***/shag is also a fitting name LOL

Coated everything with Urethane clear (the difference in quality is night and day from the dupli-color cans). A few pieces reacted with the new paint, so i'll be stripping and recoating those within the next few days... the engine bay looks amazing! but i'm going to wait to post those pics until it's done drying and the trashcan sitting in the bay is out of the way LOL. Reassembly is on the horizon!

beautiful work ur doing with limited resources and space ...that takes dedication ...i'd put this thread in ur resume !

that's pretty funny. my roommate and i were just joking about that, yesterday. I've always wanted to work in some sort of shop, whether it be repairs or customs.

One thing i learned through all this though.... I need to buy a compressor and a spray gun. The clear we sprayed was done with a borrowed compressor (huge thanks to him, i've never met the guy prior to him reaching out in our facebook group). My buddy who has been helping me, provided the paint and gun. The finish came out so much nicer than with the rattle cans. Ultimately, i think i would have saved money on buying the gear and mixing my own paint. I've spent so much money on rattle cans... lesson learned!

Been a while since i have been able to post an update. these last 2 months i've pretty much just spent focusing on financially stabilizing. Got a new job,my girl and i mutually separated (still best friends though!) etc etc...

Today i got my rebuilt head and rotating assembly back! Head rebuilt with all the goodies (check my build list if you are interested in what went in there) i had been sitting on for so long, valve grind, resurfaced, etc. The crankshaft got cut (.25mm), had my old piston faces burred down, and had the assembly balanced. Started stripping down my wire harness to find any issues that may have been hiding in there. Once all the wires are fixed, I'll be upgrading my power and grounds to 4ga. Will be re-looming everything and then wrapping with tessa tape, for that "custom touch" LOL

there's still a long list of things that need to be done, but it's all forward from here! I'm projecting to be finished by the end of september or mid october... fingers crossed

Project completion is being pushed further out :(

In process of rebuilding transmission...
Currently putting my interior back together and fixing up my wire harness... Had to replace a few broken plugs and fix a few wires.
Had to move my engine, trans, and parts to a friend's house (they were nice enough to offer me their garage space for winter :) ) to work on as the weather gets colder and wetter in Portland.

Just gotta stay focused!

trans is finished. block, head attached, timing. its finally coming together! big shout out to my buddy dathan for all the help. i wouldn't have been able to get this far on my own. this has all been a pretty amazing learning experience.

test fitted the valve cover on the head and i am really happy with how nice it looks so far! this weekend we will be attaching the manifolds and probably rebuilding the power steering pump. hopefully find the funds to get my car towed to my friend's garage to drop it all in soon :)

Got my job back at FedEx and now i am finally bouncing back financially.. it's been a wild journey with this car so far! got the laser towed to my friend's house where the engine and trans have been living. As an added bonus, i'm going to be moving in with my friend and will have full access to my own garage!!! home stretch!
