Hey everyone! It's Colton, (Bobby's son) haha, anyways, figured I'd make an account so bobby will have his when he gets him a DSM! (hope you can soon!) after setting up a sort of push to start button today, definitely not my preference, I have got it running again. I'm going to have to hunt down the problem. Somewhere between the ignition and the solenoid. It's time to start learning the ropes I guess! It quit starting on me yesterday night, not even turning over. So after I got out of class today, I grabbed some wire and jumped the solenoid to the positive, and it turned right over. So I grabbed some speaker wire and a button switch big enough to hold it all. Turn on the key, push the button and starts right up. Made sure there wasn't a risk of any fire from it, and got it set up. Is this a common problem? Or not so much..?

Yea, the bar is made from 2x2 square tubing, a long threaded bar for lowering and raising the engine (I still use a jack but this is for when I pull the oil pan), old pegs from a bike when I was younger, and to ear tabs to stabilize against the strut mounts.

As for the TOB, I have an OEM replacement, F1racing stage 3 clutch (6 puck), fidanza aluminum flywheel, new pivot ball, clutch fork, and fluids ready to go back in. I also plan on doing some serious cleaning while it is out to get ride of 180k worth of grime.

Ah, goody, I was going to ask/ensure that you went OEM as the aftermarkets' have a habit of doing what that unidentified Throwout Bearing did in that pictures above. Take the time and do it right - as it looks like you already are. Good to see people putting in some effort around these parts of the country.

Welcome aboard!

Being a common problem? Are we questioning the car not starting? If so then yes.. many a DSM have been lit on fire for not starting. Seriously, though, no - it's not super common. There can only be a few things that are causing the issue. A few of those may be - Bad contacts in the ignition. Bad Clutch Safety Switch. Bad ignition Relay. Etc. Just check one thing at a time.

I have put almost 10k miles on my exedy clutch and tob so far and haven't had a problem yet but I also used high temp grease on it too before I stuck it back in. I wonder if maybe the grease some of these guys use on the tob that come in the kits aren't good enough to with stand the heat and fail or if it is just #@%$ parts? I don't know what kind of grease that came in the kit i had but it said premium grease and it was thin feeling. Didn't have the same oily feeling good ole grease has when you get it on your hands so i trashed it and used the red/pink i call it pink high temp grease.:hmm:

Welcome Colton. Nice to see ya. Luke, if its that big of a deal, il take it ;) Haha j/k. Anyways, I would do what alex suggested on your no start issue, and glad your getting your hands dirty ;)

In class yesterday there was a girl with a centerville drag racing dirty dsm t-shirt that was pretty cool.

Also did anyone make it out to edgefest? I heard some asshole threw mud up at aaron lewis. What a punk. Lol.

The safety switch was one of the first things I checked. It seems fine. Tried a few things with it before saying that wasn't the problem. So now I'm assuming it's going to be in the ignition somewhere. Maybe after I'm off saturday I can take a look in there and see if I can't find anything! Thanks for all the help already! Haha.

I'd be willing to bet its your ignition switch. Oddly enough I've recently had that problem, as well on my last 2 dsm's.

My 240sx I had wroth a sr swap in it did that and it was hooked up to a push button and still is.

If you cant find the issue Ill check it out when you get back down. :thumb:

If its the relay, I think I have one in the dsm garage ;)

Anyone have a passenger side Talon twisty doorcap? It's the only body part missing on my AWD at the moment and would like to get it replaced and sprayed white for once the car gets rolling.

Well I just got out of class, so once I finish the homework I'll get outside and start looking.

Bobby, I may text you with some questions or just post on here. Not sure. I know you're still at work. Don't know about the rest of you all! Haha. :thumb:

Oh definitely not, in my psychology class I kept wanting to get on here and at least read a few of the tech posts or something at least! Had to stay focused though, had a quiz. :shhh: I had tapatalk on my old iPhone, haven't downloaded it again yet.

Bobby you normally reply to my texts no matter what time it is!LOL

And right now all I can do is learn! And I want to do as much of that as possible! Knowing how to work on a dsm just comes with owning one I guess! If i don't figure it out, I'd be out of either a car or money for taking it to a shop. So I'm just going figure it out!

I like this guys attitude.

Hell we went even that far from ya. Once you get to pleasent plains, its about 15minutes. And if you've never been to the fish house up in pleasent plains, I suggest you go. Pretty amazing froglegs. ;)

Best to learn how to fix it on your own because shops have issues with our cars for some reason. A shop manual, the forums, and YouTube is all you need. When I first got in the DSM game there was no YouTube videos, now they have one for nearly all aspects of repair and modification.

I think most shops would be lost under the Hood of his car. A good amount of it is custom work.

I think I know where pangburn is, I was riding with one of my buddies and we went through there on the way to his sisters house. And I'll have to look that place up! I do love frog legs!

It seems that "taking it to the shop" is my real dad's only solution, he just doesn't know what a dsm is like! So I'm just gonna start getting my hands dirty! Although I got suckered into helping a guy go get his old wheels back from a guy. He says he will probably give me his 17"s. which would make the way my car rides a heck of a lot better. I'm pretty used to using YouTube to figure stuff out, so that'll be pretty nice to have.

And I think the shop he wants to take it to would have absolutely no idea. They were confused about the clutch on the svt, bobby. Double edged flywheel!? On this!? Haha!

Do you have a picture of that? Lol I wanted to see it when I heard about it!
