Any easy way to remove P.S. belt in 1g?

I know a way to "cheat" to get belts off. It works pretty well on those pain in the ass applications where theres no tensioner. However ive never done it on my talon. Ive used it on chevys, hondas , and even a hyndai. So if you break anything its not my fault LOL... Like any short cut theres risks... With that said here goes.

Take a fairly thick screwdriver (3/8 drive extensions work pretty good too) put it where the belt seperates from the pully. Tilt the screwdriver and put a hand on each side. Now while tilting just slide up where the belt meets the pully..... and the belt will pop right off. Hope that helps :thumb:. Its kind of an awkward thing to explain but if you need i can whip something up in photo shop and youll see exactly what i mean. Just let me know.

hey,
if its the 4g63 motor, just loosen the alternator, take the alt. belt off, loosen the 3 bolts in the ps pump(12 mm i believe)push it towards the engine, and take the belt off.l8r.

loosed alt belt 12mm, use open end from under car is most easy, then pull that off then turn the eng over until the holes on the pully on the ps pump lines up with the bolts then remove the 2 14mm nuts on frount wihta socket and ext and 14mm socket then use a open end and loosen the back one, do the screw driver trick (described above) to get the belt on and do it to get the new one on makes it eaiser cuz the pump wont move all the way so u gotta use force, then use crow bar or soemthing to tighten up pump while tighting nuts first frount 2 then back and reverse intall for the alt, you may have to loosed the ps line on the top of the pump, i did

good luck
email me if u have ne q's ill wright a vfaq on it soon

just cut it, it will give you a little more power, and if you dont like it you can just put a new one on.

Wait, so you mean to tell me that if I cut my power steering belt I will get more power? Is that even safe to do? Thanks for all the previous help guys. I was going to do it today, but then it started raining really bad, so I'm going to wait.

Yes you can get rid of your powersteering for a hp gain. From what ive been told its comparable to the gain of removing your a/c. However If you do plan on eliminating your power steering dont just cut the belt. The rack that is in your car is meant to be used with a pump, it will fail and lock up over time. You can convert to a manual steering rack though. I have seen them sell on ebay for around $125 and theyre on the trader every now and then. Heres a link for the vfaq on manual conversions. http://www.mckeone.net/steering.html

Just wanted to add that if your power steering belt is cracking make sure you inspect the other two belts down there. Its unusual for just one belt to start cracking and not the others unless someone down the road sometime just changed the other belts and not powersteering.
The HP gain is result of the crank having to rotate less mass. But if you do it, I say do it right. Just beware that modded DSMs do not take well to short cuts.
Hope this helps
Steve
