First post looking for some help.

Here's the scenario, the car just got back on the road, i had the head freshened up, resurfaced, replaced all of the belts, the whole nine. The car still has an idle surge, but moving on.

On my way home and pulled in driveway, parked, went to leave again and car just cranks. It has a small "putt" coming out of the exhaust like it wants to start, but can't. Could the timing have jumped?

The plugs and wires were just replaced 2 weeks before this. The fuel pump still has a whine to it, and i replaced the fuel filter thinking it may have been the problem. The car gets spark.

Please any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 5spd.
Thanks,
Shawn

do a compression test on each cylinder with the throttle held wide open during cranking and the injector resistor pack unplugged. doing this will give you the most accurate readings. all cylinders should be within 10% of each other and at least 150 psi. if that all checks out to be good then check the fuel pressure. if that is low then the fuel pump o-ring is ripped or torn.

Compression is good, the fuel pump O-ring? Can I just replace the fuel pump and solve that problem, maybe upgrade since it needs to be anyway..

Would I be able to tell just by seeing if gas is leaking from the fuel pump, or does it have to be taken off and out and looked at?

Thanks a lot

I have a 91 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. All of a sudden it just wouldn't start, it cranks and cranks and cranks, and sounds like it wants to start but only small "putts" come out of the exhaust.

When I turn the key, just before I start, I hear nothing, but as the car cranks I hear the fuel pump kick on. Correct me if I'm wrong, but every car I've been in, the fuel pump primes itself and you hear it come on just before your start to crank over. My car doesn't do that?

Is this faulty? I never paid attention to it before. Thanks.
Shawn

On 2G's it is normal operation for the fuel pump to not be running with the ignition simply in the ON position, the engine has to be either cranking or running for the fuel pump to run. I suspect this is also true for 1G's.

On my 2g when the car is on the on position the fuel pump goes on. It's a rewired 255 Walbro. My car does not have to be turned over for the fuel pump to turn on and start "whining".

That's interesting. I see in your profile missionx96x that you own a '97 model. I wonder if there is a difference between '96 and '97 model year 2g's in regard to fuel pump operation. Does anyone know?

Is it because he has a Walbro fuel pump as in do they turn on different then the stock ones? I am getting one so like zippyshoe said does anyone know?

CAS turns the fuel pump on. The ECU only turns the pump on if it sees a signal from the cam angle sensor. Can you test your base fuel pressure? Are you getting spark from all the plugs? Have you been playing with your TPS? Do you have any CEL? If you have a bad Crank/Cam angle sensor you should get a code thrown while cranking.

I have spark to the plugs, but I also heard that if you do not use factory plugs or upgrades such as NGK then they're no good. I got mine from a local parts store, whats your opinion?

I messed with the TPS awhile back but the car ran before when I messed with it, and all of a sudden the car won't run. I had to have it towed to my house.

I will have to check the cam sensor, hopefully I can figure this out. I found the DSM shop in Manassas VA, so worst case scenario I will tow it there, but I like to do my own things hands own. Besides, money in my pocket is better than money in theirs.

THANKS
Shawn

Probably your best bet at this point would be to borrow a scan tool and see if your ECU has thrown any fault codes. If you are lucky, your ECU will have thrown one or more codes. These codes can at least guide you to the root cause of the problem.

In my Eclipse, I turn the key to the on position and hear the fuel pump prime itself PRIOR to ignition. I also had a fuel problem similar to that one but I found it to be the auto fuel shut off relay just above the master cylinder. Problem solved for me!

Okay, thanks guys. The scan tool is at my uncles for some odd reason, but when I get that hopefully something will pop up. Quick one though, its a snap on mt2500, do I need an import chip or something for this, I don't think a Chrysler chip would work.

And also, this relay above the master cylinder, how much was this to replace it?

Thanks a lot,
lI'l keep everyone posted the best I can.

I'm not familiar with that particular scan tool. However on Snap-on's website, they list Mitsubishi under the Asian Import Vehicle category. I think you are correct that Snap-on would not consider your vehicle grouped under the Chrysler category for this scan tool.
