I just installed a K/N Air element cone and took out the entire filter housing. I have a pipe from the throttle body to the MAS and K/N. I drive normally with it and notice better response but when cruising either at 30 40 or 50 or above the car jerks like it is losing power...any one have this problem I have not changed anything else to the car yet. Please help me! I put the old filter and housing back and the car runs without problems....must have to do with getting too much air? How can I work around this?

I have an 1.8L SOHC with nothing else done to the engine, I just bought this car and am giving it to my wife. I checked the MAS and I do not see anything missing from it. I am guessing with the new filter the car is running way too lean and the MAS isnt working fast enough to tell the ciomputer to pump out more gas or maybe my stock fuel pump and injectors isnt good enough for a K/N air element without a box?? I find this strange but maybe im use to bolting on to many things to a 5.0 mustang without hving too much trouble. PLEASE HELP ME THOUGH

Well I've never heard of anyone running into problems after simply installing an open-air K&N filter. I didn't think the car would run lean simply because of the missing box. Check the MAS and make sure both honeycombs, upper and lower, are present and undamaged. They should be there if you never played around witht he MAS.

This was a dumb experiment that I did a few months ago... just to see if I'd get better performance:
I removed the can housing from the air filter and rigged it all together so that the car would 'breathe' better. I had the filter element hanging in mid-air, but functioning, everything hooked up as usual... just no metal enclosure around it.
The car performed with better acceleration but 'stumbled' @ 30, 40, 50 mph, sort of a 'jerking'. Putting the can back on, around the filter, restored normal smooth performance.... Sound familiar!!!?
I figured that the ECU [or MAS] could not deal with the increased [less restricted] air flow... What do I know!!!?

Thats hits the spot, does anyone know why and how to over come this problem??? There must be a way since people have done this before.

I'm also curious about this. I thought that an open-air filament would run fine, but I guess it has problems too.

hows it idle?are you getting a CEL light? try resetting your ecu and let it run at idle for 10-15 min. that might help it

Got me? What is 'resting idle'?
Anyway... resetting the ECU is as easy as disconnecting the battery for a minute or two. [The reset didn't work for me. I ended up keeping the can on.]

It was suppose to say reseting idle, not resting, my bad. I will not except the fact that the ECU cannot deal with increased airflow because how can people out there add on turbos? Just does not make sense to me.

I have installed the K&N filter on my stock air box, but removed the outer cover and used a plumbing bracket to hold the pipe in place and have had no problems. Like said above I would just check your connections, also rev it from under the hood and see if you forgot to hook up a vaccum line. To reset the ECU, just unhook the negative battery cable for about 5 minutes then reinstall it.

Good Luck

but it only seems like it does it when its warmed up ? i'm going to try reseting the ecu right now... if anyone figures it out tell us

I have this problem also at first i though it was my transmission. I installed a cold air intake pipe up to my K&N fliter with a Hacked MAS and as i go faster and faster i notice that my car sorta feels like it is cutting out. I think that there is to much air entering the MAS it doesn't know what to do with such high flow. Would getting a 2G MAS slove this problem?

i had no problem with mine i removed the can and put in a k&n i could tell it was getting alot more air it was a little louder. thehyena you dont know what you are talking about, try resetting the ecu, it might not work b/c the ecu has the flow factors from stock stored in it, if you re set it it should fix all. o and i forgot to add that i usede to have a 1.8 laser so dont say ist b/c mines not a 1.8.

I reset the ECU last night and left the battery unhooked for like 10 mins, then reattached and let the car idle for a while....it idled very well with no spikes. Now I drove it for about 30 mins no problems so far.....The wife is taking it around town today and i am sure ill get a call if something odd happens! I have not gotten around to doing the checks i would have liked to do with a DVM but maybe this weekend, we will see. I will keep posting what troubles I get into.
