Update 10.1

2GB Talon TSI AWD - Onyx Idle - YouTube

The intake is non-recriculated at current and I still haven't finished the Stainless Steel heatshield. Been sidetracked. But fear not, the replacement intake pipe is on it's way as well as a new spark plug cover. This is as she sits right now with new lifters and fresh Clevite Rod Bearings.

Hell of a teaser how about the next one you let us hear the bov, and the 2step?

In the very first video, the PTU was failing. It was essentially running on two cylinders at the time. In the most recent video just a few posts above this one, it's running exactly as it should.

A quick problem update.

I am at 282 miles. I noticed a ticking that is getting somewhat worse as time goes on. I hopped under the car and checked everything out and noticed it was coming from the transmission. Uh oh. Had someone press the clutch in and it went away. It sounds like a rattling TOB but I can't be 100% sure. I've decided to continue driving the car to see what, exactly, it does. It could be just a noisy TOB or could be something more terrible like the clutch or PP falling apart in which case the XTD clutch wouldn't have even made it 500 miles on easy driving with no launches.

We'll see.

If you cheaped out on a Clutch Should have gone with a F1 from GripForce They will hold up for sure I've used a ton of them from that seller. Little late for that kind of advice though.Anyway When you get moved an the time comes just let me know and we can see what we can do from there :)

Well I wanted to give XTD a try because they backed their part and still are. The noise I'm not exactly sure on what it is, but the only clutch I'll go with is a TMZ Southbend. I'll run this one and see what comes of it. It's not awful, but the noise is there. The TOB and other components are OE so I can only imagine it's a spring or something in which I'll be having XTD cover a new clutch and just resell it. Once I get moved, I see me parking this in my new garage, dropping the trans, and installing that clutch.

I can't wait to have you tune it. She's got pep to her now but I don't expect to be making over 260 with the setup on it currently, untuned. I think with a good, solid tune I can see from 325-350 with the head setup and whatnot. After which, hell, I might just hold off on it as when I move I'll have a ton of pocket money and just install a somewhat larger turbo. I want something that spools fairly quick, hits hard, and will carry me to 450hp as that's where I want to be.

Can't go wrong with a Southbend I've always had great results with them and Run one myself.

Sounds good though Just let me know when the time comes and I'm sure we can get you what you want out of the whatever setup you go with :)

We'll see.

I tried the XTD clutch, mine lasted a few thousands miles then the little springs started popping out. I wish I had pictures of it to post. The TOB was also trashed.

Well I didn't use the TOB they sent, I ordered an OEM bearing to try to avoid that problem. Since the clutch doesn't have any hard driving on it I would surely think that it's not something as terrible as a spring but we'll see for sure here soon! Car is documented that it hasn't been on the road past the warranty time so I'm sure they'll cover the failure if it is one. Then I'll go with the clutch I wanted to begin with before I decided to give this clutch a test. At least I've documented it's progression for others during this time.

It does grab rather well, I can say that for sure.

I wandered back in here for the first time on tuners in 6 months. I'm finishing my build, i remember buying my xtd at the same time as yours. Mine is unsprung and im using new oem parts, going to replace master and slave, fork and tob using stock gsx flywheel. Hopefully we can compare notes and prove that xtd makes damn good clutches. Good to see you are still going strong.

Well. Bad news Irish -

Update : Full disclosure.

The XTD has failed. At exactly 507 miles the clutch began slipping at 8psi on a 16g, half throttle, flat road, at 4.3k rpms.

The XTD was a combination I requested from the company itself. 2300#lbs pressure plate with a sprung 6 puck clutch disk mated to an OE Flywheel resurfaced to spec. The car saw very careful and light driving to 200 miles. After that boost was given making no more than 12psi at half throttle. Clutch grabbed and held perfectly. At 250 after a casual no boost drive the clutch started making noise. Clutch peddle engagement height changed slightly. At 400 miles in the same casual driving condition the clutch noise was a bit more audible but went away after a few minutes of idling. Clutch still engaged and grabbed nice and smooth. Boost was kept at a minimum and absolutely no launches or WOT scenarios were present. At 500 miles I began noticing a loss of power. Figured it to be a boost leak or ignition. Car seemed fined. Boost lwak test showed a few small leaks. Plugs and wires looked great. Afrs were still steady. Took the car down the road and gave ot a half throttle 3rd gear boost to 12psi. At 4.3k rpm the clutch began slipping causing my rpms to immediately spike to 6.8k.

Overall? It lasted 500 miles. As a test clutch I suppose I can deal. I am disappointed as there are reports of people beatong on this clutch right out of the box and it does fine for thousands of miles but this one seems to be the typical 'bad apple' everyone states they are.

For $170? Eh.

Alright everyone - Some new information.

I pulled the clutch, which was simple now that I have a massive shop with all of the tools I need, and inspected it. Turns out the clutch is fine. There was an issue with the OE Throw Out bearing which was not allowing the clutch to ever fully disengage. I went ahead and replaced it as well as readjusted my clutch to eliminate any possibilities of peddle pump up, and so far it's doing absolutely great with no more slipping and holds/grabs even better. So perhaps the clutch isn't quite as bad as I so reported.

Furthermore, I resolved the issue with the bumper not lining up properly with a couple more drilled holes and some heavy duty hardware.

Also cut and welded in a nipple for a boost source for the MBC as I recently ran into an issue with boost not able to be set lower than 22psi. Though the car did okay with this, I felt it was unneeded until it is tune here in the next few weeks. It was previously temporarily T'd into the BOV line and I noticed a loss of power under low boost and a sudden drop of power when the WG opened which, told me, that the pressure was dropping in the line to the BOV when the MBC opened to allow pressure thru to the waste gate. Upon dedicating a line to the BOV and one to the MBC I am able to properly adjust my boost levels.

I have also discovered that age has gotten to the boots on my upper adjustable ball joints on my passenger side front. I will be purchasing new ball joints and a lower control arm for the passenger side this week and will have it all installed by a shop as well as aligned and such as I do not feel like messing with ball joint removal/installation.

Beyond that, she's still purring like a kitten. Tons of photos and video coming soon!

Well guys, I promised an update but with being so damn busy after moving I've had little time to post one. When I last left off, I was about to drive the Talon to Memphis TN which was about a 2 hour trip. I am happy to report that the Talon made it without a hiccup. That was 3-4 months ago. She has sat ever since, only being taken short distances or just parked waiting for suspension updates. Seeing this wasn't the most exciting thing in the world.

So I purchased all new front control arms with ball joints, links, tie rod ends, and upper control arms. I was able to get it all installed last night in about 3 hours (Yay for air tools) and updated with little to no issue. The only downside was that the new A-Arms which were sent had perfect ball joints but the bushings were shot, so they are being sent back. In a moment of genius I realized I could retain my Ingalls kits and just switch over boots as the old balljoints were absolutely perfect. Here is a quick series of pictures.

I think these wheels look much nicer, but I need some meatier tires.

As for any other updates : I lowered my battery to the subframe, was able to get my bumper aligned, updated couplers, and snapped a bolt on the exhaust manifold that holds the heat shield to the manifold. >.<

Also got a set of Digital Boost/Oil Pressure gauges and while the oil gauge is nice, the boost gauge seems a little laggy/inaccurate. I may be going with a Glowshift gauge to replace it.

Also, with the oil pressure gauge, I idle at around 5-8psi. Hopefully that's enough. :p

Update : Final

And so here we are. From start to finish, I have obtained the single DSM that I had always wanted. I resurrected a car which left the hands of a well-respected community member and contributed to where the community went and has come. From sitting in pieces to daily driving, all under my ownership for quite some time now. The car was put together as a full weight, full option, stock appearance, all while retaining the same modifications that Polk made to the car minus the tuning solution, block, and monitoring utilities.

So over this time I have watched the community fall even further than it previously was when I joined which was pretty late in the game. When I take the vehicle out I am addressed by older individuals who know what the cars are and are no longer in the scene because they could see where it was heading. Anyone younger, well, I can't say much positive about that side. Because of this - since it has been completed and being daily driven I have not taken it to but one get-together. There is no desire to share it with the community in my hands any longer which is very saddening to me. I absolutely adore the vehicle and it certainly deserves a lot of attention and respect - but I don't see that coming for it.

So, per this, I have spent quite some time debating on what to do with it. My first thoughts were to park it in a storage building and let it exist there out of harms way, but that would be disrespectful for the vehicle. So after a long search and turning down more offers to purchase the car or make trades for it left and right than I can count based strictly on the potential new owners' character - I have found someone I believe will be able to pick up and carry on with her with the motivation I no longer have in a community that I just no longer feel any love for.

This owner treats his current vehicles with the utmost care and respect. In our deal I am seeing great care and dignity in what they have and I expect to see the same carried over to Onyx. In our discussions I have found that her best interest lies with them - I'm sure she will be seen much more often than I am motivated to show her.

As such, I am moving on to a new platform and laying down my gloves in the DSM world once and for all. It has been a hell of a ride and certainly a learning experience since the days of being tricked into purchasing a dead 1.8 and performing my first ever mechanical job which was a 4g63nt swap. Since then I have rehabilitated over a dozen DSMs from the depths of being scrap material to being daily drivers. Many have poked fun at me for this as I have not "stuck to a single DSM." but when I picked this one up I said " This is my last one." And so it is. I will not own another DSM in respect to that statement. As of Friday, October 11th 2013, Onyx will no longer be in my ownership.

I have made some absolutely great friends and seen some fantastic work done by truly talented individuals, but I simply cannot be part of a community that would rather one-up itself time and time again instead of work as a single unit as several, several other platform communities do. This does not stand as a singling out to this site as it encompasses every other one out there as well. I will certainly still be around to offer help and advice to those who actually need it and as most of my close friends are members of the community I suppose I am still attached in some ways and will still be expected at the Annual Shootout - just in a different vehicle.

So in closing, thank you everyone. Thank you for your support and time invested in keeping up with this project for as long as you have. This was my final project as a part of the DSM community and I am absolutely thankful for the friends, knowledge, and memories made through this and previous endeavors. Onyx lives and breathes, and is an absolutely amazing vehicle that needs a few finishing touches here and there - but she is low 11's ready as she sits and can go much more than that with a little motivation, and that is all thanks to the knowledge given to me by the great friends I have made here as well as a few that could use a little encouragement to become more likable people. ;)

Goodbye~

Kei

Sorry to hear that the car is going, but your new car is quite a vehicle. I wish you the best of luck with it, which I'm sure you won't need much. ;) That is a stout platform.

You did an awesome job on this car, and it shows! Hope to see you around!! :)
