okay i have a 91 eagle talon tsi fwd, it has a blown turbo and it smokes alot, also the #1 cylinder has no compression. i droped in some oil it when up to 50. the car runs great still... it just cuts out a little plus the smoking from the turbo. wondering if thats normal for the car to still run good? i just completed taking off the heads. All of the pistons and inner piston walls look really smooth ( cant tell any difference from the piston with 0 pressure to the others). I was wondering what kind of things to look for if the rings are bad? ezest way to change them? how do i tell if my valves are messed up?

my head gasket was a 3 peice gasket i dont know who it was made by but it didnt look damaged. i have a new felpro gasket. the oil didnt look milky. it did over heat once but never in the red zone. coolant was boiling a little, but coolant looked clean as well. getting a new T stat.

i am a dsm fan and always have been dispite my dad and his "if its not a usa v8 its not worth anything" teachings :rolleyes: im sure for someone who knows these cars the answers to my problems are ez but im still knew to working on cars in general let alone this nice little dsm.

if anyone has any ideas on the remedies for my problems and info on other potential problems it would be greatly appeciated

i second the head gasket. also i would try replacing studs if they are stock. i had the problem with coolant boiling in the overflow, and i re tightened my arp studs, maybe the studs are a little streched too, just a thought.
 
it could be the head gasket... when you replace the head gasket try using new head studs id recommend dealer or arp...! also i had the same problem but it ended up being my valves staying open...! as for the compression.. it could be a number of things... piston rings, head gasket, etc... if i was in this situation now that the head is out.. id get it checked for warping and resurface it and add new valve seals... and if its not too much id hone the cylinder walls and put new piston rings too make sure
 
I'm finishing up a teardown simply for piston ring replacement right now. I had low compression across the board. The old rings were pretty tired and worn.

You can get rings for $50, and new Rod Bearings for $20ish from partsdinosaur. They work perfectly.

Might as well tear it down and do it right.
