    Hey guys,

Not new to DSMs but new to a DSM in California. Just purchased a BONE stock 92 TSi with low mileage. Zero mods.

It's a VA car that wasn't 50 state legal to begin with. The law seems to state that NEW cars need to be 50 state legal but old ones not so much.

Either way, I can't seem to figure it out.

Does anyone happen to have a picture of a 1G Talon Emissions label that's 50 state legal so I could check it out?

What is it that you are trying to figure out?

*Cars sold NEW in the US were either Federal or California emissions standards. If it was sold in California when it was new it was almost certainly California standards compliant. Elsewhere in USA it is federal emissions standards compliant. But because federal doesn't include California, I would say it cant be the car that is "50 state legal" variety. So the California standards compliant cars (strictest) would likely be in compliance with both California and federal standards, making it 50 state legal?

I had a 90' that was California compliant, it did have a little sticker under the hood with the vacuum hose chart that said this vehicle complies to California emissions, something to that effect.

Got a photo of that? For research purposes.

Trying to figure out whether the Federally legal cars are legal to register here at all.

A picture of the sticker can be used for purposes to improve my chances, so to speak.

Have you checked your DMV website (or whatever they call it there) to see if its age gives it an exemption? I know Cali rules suck, but its worth looking into.

Its age should give it exemption but there are OEM emission stickers on ebay... I had to buy one to bring my car down from Canada because the canadian emission sticker is not legal in Wasghington state

Smog techs don't really care about the under-hood stickers too much, they should be able to look up all the info they need to inspect your car at the stations, if your car is not a CA emissions car they will smog it as a federal emissions car, that basically means you need all the hoses and emissions components, that came on the federal emissions car to begin with, I know sometimes people delete emissions hoses, in non smog states, however you need all that stuff put back on and hooked up and working correctly to pass the CA emissions test.

@mitsubishikid is correct. If it's a fed spec car it will be smogged against fed standards instead of Cali standards. When the smog tech checks your VIN it should say which standard it will be tested to. If you send me your VIN I can check for you.

You cannot smog a new fed spec car (less than 2 years old and less than 7500 miles). But for used fed spec cars you can smog it, otherwise people moving into the state wouldn't be able to bring in their vehicles. I had a fed spec Mighty Max from Washington State that I smogged and registered here. The fed spec didn't have an EGR from the factory.
