Im in need of some more hp, should i go stage 1 or all motor. what are the dis/advantages of each. whats cheaper? more reliable? what would i need to get 50 more hp all motor?

cai
jeep tb
underdrive pulley
apexi n1 cat back
headers

with that im guessing maybe 20-25 hp... what else could i add to that list

Port and polish all your manifolds and runners. Also with the head off, get a 3 angle valve job done.

go all motor.... it's a lot more reliable
go with what TimG said... i ould say at very least 10 - 11 hp more aT VERY LEAST

if you have patience go all motor but if you want a quick hp jump go with the stage 1 turbo

I'd say just buy a CAI and a 50 shot of nitrous for some easy HP. And BTW, it's header since we have inline 4's, just in case you get flamed in the future. But an all-motor DSM running 14's or so would be really nice.

1: Port and polish the intake and exhaust manifold.

If you did decide to take the head off to get it ported and polished replace that AWSOME HEADGASKET that we got installed in our cars from the factory. (that was a joke just so you guys know this.)

2: Port and polish with a 3-angle valve job on the head.

3: Upgrade your brakes and rotors (baer brakes and crossdrilled rotors).
(or you can do the 3000gt brake set up front mod)

4: If you dont have emissions then get a straight pipe in place of your cat. If you got emissions... GUT THAT ####Y! (cat converter, not actually gut a cat...)

With all those you would probably be happy.
Also if you dont mind me asking why do you want exactly 50 horses?

50 hp is just a goal... thanks every1 for your great replys. also i never thought there were 2 headers its just how i typed it :D thanks again :dsm:

It would take alot to make more hp all motor and cost alot more money you can be alot faster with turbo than all motor. All motor might be more reliable but turbo you can up grade in stages and go low compression and turn up the boost or turn it down once you go high compression in an all motor app. you can't just turn it down. think about it, I have had my car turboed for a long time and have had no problems yet. I say yet because once you start going fast stuff brakes."If your not braking stuff your not going fast enough." Isay turbo because you'll have more options in the long run.

Do i have to take the car to any special place or doing anything special to get it ported and polished.. within the next month im going to take the engine apart and put it back together.. but while its apart.. might as well get this stuff done..

any info would be helpful.. dont know too much about all this..

When you have it apart bring the head to a machine shop along with the intake and exhaust manifolds and the throttle body and ask them how much to port and polish all those parts.

Only thing they can do to the tb is bore it tho, maybe polish it. Once you get em back get you about 10 diff lvl's of sandpaper and sand the parts out till a bright awsome finish and you would probably jump up and down like a schoolgirl at prom!

If you need anything else feel free to pm me or pm any other great people on this site. 98Turbo420A is a wisemen and he knows a whole bunch about our motors... 1TuffRS knows alot about all motor and 98Turbo420A knows alot about the turbo setup... Ask em!

All motor is a harder task in our cars. There is a lot that you can do, but most of it will require you to pull the head, or some other major work (major to the shade tree mechanic, not a DSM owner...LOL) Plus once you do go all motor and up comp. ratios and all there is really no going back without major work to pull the stuff back out. Plus if your going for real all motor power (I understand this guy only wants 50hp but I'm talking real power) it won't be all that streetable, or reliable. You get those huge cams and port it out and it'll idle funny and the driveability will suffer too. If you only want 50 try intake, exhaust, AFX under drive pulley, and Heder you will be pretty close to that #. Does anyone who uses heders on their car have a before/ after dyno for them? I ask because years ago on 2gnt we thought that hedders acctually lost power in these cars, and I believe we had dyno runs to back it up. I notice a lot of you guy's run the hedders though so I want to be sure I remember it correctly.

i seriously doubt thatll give you 50 hp, maybe20- 25 at the max, go ahead and go turbo...youll savee money in the long run..

stage one turbo kit is good for 50 HP. just intercool it and it'll be pretty reliable. Just don't touch the boost =P thats when you start running into problems. trying to gain like 50 HP from engine work is EXPENSIVE. or is it?

anyway turbo is a good 50 hp BOLT ON. no taking engine apart and doing all this goofy porting and polishing that take hours and hours to do (haha I should know I just got done rebuilding my engine) =P.

Ah the question all n/t people have to face. To turbo or not to turbo. Here's my .02. All motor has much better take off. Turbo on the other hand has that awesome sound and you get a BOV. I think all motor would be more reliable than a turbo, but I don't know for sure. I might go turbo, but I am going to rebuild before I do. So here's my plan. Rebuild, put all new internals in it. The whole smash. I plan on getting about 30-50 hp out of my rebuild with cams, intake manifold, TB, head work, fuel system. Then get a turbo kit. After a little while drop to 8:1 and turn the boost up. Thats my long term goal.

Are you a mechanic? Do you know what your doing or do you at least have someone helping you that knows about these motors. I know from expirience that by looking at the manual wont get you to far. If you want the quick hp then go with a turbo but make sure you intercool it and you shouldnt have problems unless your car is just a piece and if you actually take care of the car you wont have any problems. When you go bigger or you want to go faster is when you run into problems. If your not a mechanic then you dont need to go all motor because you have to keep up with all your mods and thats not the easiest to do if you dont know what your doing. My Opinion only though. Hope to help out in some way.

If you decide all motor or not, Get the port and polish done. That mod will do wonders for both turbo and all motor applications. By the way i was hearing alot about this jeep tb. What is it 60mm or so. Hell of alot cheaper that buying an aftermarket one. SOunds like a damn good mod.
