Let me preface this by saying I know that the 42RLE (jeep RWD tranny) will fit the 2.4 SRT or cloud engines. The NVT350 and A604 from the 2.4 also fit the 420A. I'm wondering if the 42RLE driveshaft is the correct length to spline with a 420A clutch and pressure plate. I know that with enough time and money, it's possible to drop ANY tranny on to ANY engine, but this is a little different. Any one have an idea?

The driveshaft is never the problem. You can get them in any length, and splined for any application you want.

The 42RLE is a ATX RWD transmission. Not only would you not be using a clutch with this, it'd have to be conventionally mounted, meaning you will have to longitudinally mount the engine to use this transmission.

42rle is not just a jeep trans it is used in dakotas lh cars and a various amount of other cars. its based off the 42te that was used in the old lx cars (ie intrepids). as far as the driveshaft is concerned i dont know why you would be splining it directly into the clutch? but to answer that no it will not the driveshaft is internally splined where as the input shaft has external splines. if you want to use this trans you ###### could but its an auto so you wont need your clutch. if you need any questions answered pm me im a chrysler auto trans specialist at the dealer i work at factory trained baby

Thanks for the help guys. I plan on making my car a track only drag car and I've got a buddy that used to have the fastest 1G in Indiana who also happens to build award-winning mini-truck frames that can mount the engine longitudionaly(sp?) I'd like to make it RWD within the next 2 years and I'm doing all the research I can. I realize I may have been using the wrong terminology. The driveshaft is what connects the trans to the rear dif. or transfer case in AWD applications. I'm talking about the input shaft from the trans to clutch. Also, maybe I posted the wrong trans code? I'm talking about the RWD trans from the 4cyl Jeep wranglers. I'm pretty sure they are the same one just one uses a transfer case for AWD, whereas the RWD just has the rear diff.

Thanks again guys.

The 42LE has the transfer case, the 42RLE doesn't. I think you used the correct reference.

The input spline count won't be of much matter either, since you'll be using a torque converter with these transmissions. The torque converter will bolt directly to the flex-plate. If the provisions are incorrect on a 420a flex plate for that torque converter, you can just have a machine shop add them in the proper place for you.

If you were considering using the torque converter from the A413, then it would bolt up to our flex-plate, but I have no idea if the splines match.

I thought that the 42RLE was a 5-speed manual trans. Because, I may be an idiot for saying this but, I suppose for the sake of consistency, the auto trans is the best option. But, I like there to be a certain degree of driver error to accounted for when drag racing. Anybody can stomp on a pedal. For that, and only that reason, I would like to find a manual trans that will bolt up directly...off to the neon forums...

Props to Mark for the link. I've figured out EXACTLY what I'm going to do. I'm not saying $#!t though. I think I figured out why everyone is always so hush hush with their builds. Thanks again.

I'm not hush hush. Hell I have indept pictures from day one on just about all my builds. I never understood the hush hush unless your doing something that is ground breaking and never done before or your a competitive race who travels to differents states and events every year. Oh well either way good luck.

Another reason people keep quiet is because if it doesn't work they don't look bad either remember that ;)

That's generally the reason. And precisely the reason that I do post up info as I go. I want people to know that failure is a part of success.

And I've had my share.

All the more reason to post as you go. If you only post when something works then they will think that everything is suposed to work. I think that's part of the reason you see so many part outs. Every kid with $2k and a computer thinks he can buy a talon.eclipse/laser spend a couple hundred bucs and go spank everything on the road and run 11's or 10's or whatever because they saw X company do it. Not knowing X company probably blew up 10 other cars to get to that point but because X company never said anything about the other cars people think it was instant success.

Once everything commences I'll post with the ups and downs...But you are right, I don't want to look like a shmo.
