hey guys..

well i just wanted to let other members with a 420A Non-Turbo Eclipse. i have a 1997 GS Non-Turbo.. and my ride was running GREAT :thumb: with my CAI (Cold Air Intake) with a 2.5" inch air filter. well just the other day.. had nothing to do so i decided to replace my air filter (which was a bit dirty but not that dirty) with a 3" inch air filter from AutoZone. well i had to also get an adaptor (2.5" to 3").

i figure that the 3" inch air filter with an adaptor should hurt my ride, but it did.. once everything was installed.. my car felt like it was breathing but like it was struggling to breath.. so then i decided to put back in my 2.5" inch air filter and i was running quick on the throttle like before.

this was my experience and just wanted to share and try to help other. 3" inch air filter was nice.. but just felt that my was running stock, but once i got my 2.5" air filter back on.. i was running fast with quick response.

here is a pic of the 2.5" inch air filter (doesnt look that nice, but damm it sucks air really good) and also a pic of the 3" air filter from AutoZone (i thought my car was on life support when i put this air filter in :barf: )

but everything is perfect now.. oh ya.. i dont used the heat shield shown in the pic.. it just doesnt give that much air flow.

haha thanks for the advice. i had one of those on my cars stock intake tube, and one night im driving back to my house with a couple of friends, and it feels like we hit a cat or somthing. i didnt really think anything of it. anyways we get home and pop my hood to look at my headlights, and the filter is gone. haha it fell out of the bottom of my car. i wasnt to sad cause i got an AEM one a short time later, but it was funny. mine seemed to breath fine tho, well at least better than the airbox.

:thumb: im glad my little info help, i thought that by adding a 3" inch air filter i would get more air.. but i turns out that i felt that i was pulling a truck behind me, but makes a big difference for me when i put my 2.5" inch air filter back in.. i was running fast as usually.

ive used both sizes.... none of this "truck pulling" stuff for me

thats good to hear.. then maybe its just the material in this 3" inch air filter from AutoZone. but im back with my 2.5" and happy. thanks for the post tho. :thumb:

mmmm well i have used the 3" for over a year now and i think it works just fine... that is how it comes from Injen also... a 3'' k&n filter. Maybe you installed it wrong??? or the adapter was ####ed...

I run a 3" air filter and my car doesn't seem to feel like it is starving for air...but ita a short ram intake and its not a cold air..which I don't know if that would make a diffrence..but when I get my CAI then it will have a 2.5" air filter...but they are all better than the stock restricting airbox...:thumb:

ive had short ram and cold air and i used a 2.5 inch on both until they were dirty and then bought a 3inch from autozone. I didnt notice any difference.

hmm well I used to have a 3 inch home depot brand cold air intake on my RS and it seemed to run well. But I could see how it would take away some torque or hp because your getting less intake velocity you no creating enough suction for the engine. The only way to really know is dyno WTF!! you'd probably see more gains in the higher rpms and losses in the lower end.

I would have to say it's the material that the autozone filter is made out of. Try getting a 3" K&N filter and i'm confident your air starvation won't happen.

But if you're pipe is only 2.5", then yea, no real point in getting a 3" filter. :thumb:

i have a 3" intake and it works just fine. The only thing its that i need to replace the filter because of the ram air setting i have.

i have a cai but its a 2.5" Air Fitler n no one around here sells that size, where can i find a 3" Air Filter adapter

THANKS ALL for the update and all the help.. its probably the material that autozone had in their filter.. as for now.. im back with the 2.5" air filter and running smooth and powerfull..

just working on putting my full cat-back but got a problem with one of the bolts.. damm thing is stuck..

thanks all.. for visiting.. :thumb:

I have IceMan Cold Air Intake... which a few of 420a tuners out there dont have.

The Iceman comes with a 3 inch k and n filter. No Clue What your talking about losing power. 2.5 or 3.0 inch size filters dont make a difference. Its all about the brand, autozone filters which are probably cheap paper filters can let a rock hit it and make a hole in it and another rock can go in it again and go thru your tb and mess things up.

For Example its like a clutch

you can buy a stage 3 clutch on ebay .... which you think is good, then you can go out and buy a stage 1 clutch from clutchmasters and youll see a big difference.

Ive had my iceman cold air intake for 3 years. It was the first mod i did in my car , and i was truly satisfied the material of the pipe never gets hot or cold.

The only thing good about Aem is that in the winter the pipe is cold but heats up a lil. The bad thing is that in the summer the pipe gets so hot that your sucking up hot air thru your tb. :dsm:
