So it looks like I'm going to be acquiring a Talon Esi, it's stock and automatic. Far from the best vehicle for racing, but I'm absolutely going mad wanting to get some track days in, and my other projects are a ways out. Does anyone roadrace or autocross their 420A? Can you comment on the reliability factor? Of course I'll be doing all the regular maintenance items straight away, but any issues I can correct before I discover them myself would be great!

I would invest in a crank scaper. Our oil pans have zero baffling/windage tray to keep oil in the pan on hard turns.

Let me know how that goes at the autox. I can't imagine running an automatic, though I know people do it. You'll probably have some fun regardless.

I can't answer your question since I don't have any experience with the 420a, but I wouldn't hesitate to autox pretty much any car that's mechanically sound. Road course is a whole different story, though, so hopefully a 420a person can chime in to help answer that. It doesn't matter much for autox, but for the road course you'll want some good brake pads and fluid.

I've done 1 track day with mine and bunch of autox. Stock oil pan, no baffles or crank scraper. Although those would be a good idea. I would bet with more track time I would see some oil pressure issues, especially will a good set of tires.

I really haven't had any reliability issues, normal problems that could have happened anyways. The biggest issues I had was oil sloshing in the valve cover and coming out of the vent port on the driver side. It could be because I'm turbo and causing more crank case pressure. I use to run just a small filter on it, and it would shoot oil all over the motor during autox runs. I installed a catch can and during a track day it filled the can up. Maybe 8 oz or more oil.

So a catch can setup for sure.

Are you logging oil pressure? Yeah I don’t plan on running this on slicks or anything close, but I might go ahead and install that Crank scraper setup for safety’s sake, as the car will be a daily for a while.

I'm not logging oil pressure but I do have a gauge on the A pillar.
