I think would you mean to ask is whats the difference between 4 and 3 bolt, and whats the difference between 6 and 7 bolt. the 4 bolt 6 bolt setup was the strongest model the factory ever produced. I could be wrong, so anyone feel free to correct me If needed.

I think you confused him even more because you didn't explain yourself.
The 3bolt and 4bolt refer to the rear end on the car. 6bolt and 7bolt refers to the two diff types of engines. i'm pretty sure that every dsm up to but not including the '92, has a 6bolt engine w/ a 3bolt rear end and everything else has a 7bolt engine w/ a 4bolt rear end. The 4bolt rear ends are known to be stronger because its bolted up w/... 4bolts and i believe the shafts are a little thicker as well... i might be mistaken so it might help if some more people relied w/ more info.

geez everyone could be wrong huh? :p

92 was the only year they made the 6bolt-4bolt combo. everything pre 92 was 6bolt-3 bolt and post 92 was a 7bolt-4bolt. The 6 bolt block is stronger than the notorious ever crankwalking 7 bolt block. these numbers (6 and 7) refers to the number of bolts on the flywheel

as for the rear, the 4 bolts are larger than the 3 bolts (as seen below) and can handle more power. 3 bolts can be removed and swapped with 4 bolt rears in the early 6 bolts. VFAQ has a write up on the install

I have a a 1992, manufactured in February, Eclipse GSX. This would mean I'm one of the lucky ones who own a 6/4-bolt combo correct? You're able to tell a 6-bolt engine from a 7-bolt engine by looking at the oil pan correct? The oil pan of the 6-bolt's has a dent in it? yes?
