so if your interested in putting a 2g transmission in a 1g you have probably heard it can be done in a AWD. but what about the FWD? i personally have not found one writeup of it being done on a fwd so i took my chance since i found a nice 2g tranny for cheap.

here is what you are gonna have to do to make this work.
1. you need to replace the 2g speed sensor to the 1g cable speed sensor.

replaced with 1gen cable speed sensor

2. clutch cylinder bolts off the 1g are a little to short to fit the 2g trans. luckily mine came with the clutch cylinder so i used the bolts on there.

3. you need to switch the 2g shift arm with the 1g up and down shift arm.
you also have to bend the 2g left to right shift arm to look like the 1g. i dont know if you can remove the 1g left to right arm.

i used a pair of vice grips and bent the hell out of it. it was not easy and it looks really banged up but it shifts perrrrfect :)

4. your gonna have to make a new hole in the plate/shield inbetween the tranny and block for the starter holes. it is off by just a bit. MODERATOR'S NOTE: The correct way to do this is to simply buy a 2G FWD turbo starter plate. That part number is MD194962 and should only be ~$20 brand new.

5. the counter-weight on the 2g left to right shift arm had to be cut off on mine due to the fact that it hit my coolant hose and would not shift all the way. i just used a hack saw.

fit right in!

7. !!!IMPORTANT!!! Now i heard you can do several things to make this work. right now im still looking for a set of axles but i will update when i get them. in the 90-92 transmissions they used smaller axles that will NOT fit in the 2g transmission. i am looking for a set of 93-94 axles that are bigger and have heard these WILL work in a 2g transmission. UPDATE:::: 2g axles WILL work. the drivers side fits and is not to long however the passenger side will need to be modified slightly ill update again.

if your not sure what year transmission you have just read the label on the top of the tranny. if your tranny has the SPZV i believe these are the 90-92 transmissions. the SPQV are the 93-94. dont hold me to that thought :)

8. remove all the mounts off the 2g transmission you only need the 1 top mount off of your 1g. dont worry about the big screw looking thing the mount will just dodge it :)

the mount

I performed this when I was 19 years old! I am now 32 and can't believe I found my old account. Moved on from DSMs but still love cars and learned so much on this platform. Just converted a 66 mustang from an automatic to 5 speed.

Look at all those grammar mistakes! LOL

Working on a similar swap having a hard time with the passenger side CV axle. How did you modify yours? Driver side went right in passenger side seems to be too long.
