2G oil return line on a 1G

Overview:

This is a quick tutorial on converting a 2g oil return pipe to work on a 1g with a 14b/16g turbo. There is a lot of conflicting information floating around about this issue so I decided to set the record straight. This is a worthwhile conversion. A 2g oil return line is around $12 while a 1g is currently $65. It is extremely easy to do and saves money.

The 2g oil return line is exactly the same as a 1g except for the flange that connects to the turbo. The bolt holes are too far apart to connect to a TDO5H housing. This is a much better alternative to clamping a hose in the place of a metal pipe.

Tools Recommended:
• Angle grinder
• Cutting disc
• Grinding disc
• 10mm socket
• 1/4" socket U joint (optional, but easier)


Proper Safety Precautions:

Disconnect the battery before starting this project. The lower heat shield on the turbo can short the terminal on the alternator easily if you are not careful. Wear safety glasses. Oil in the eyes is not fun.

Steps

1. Disconnect battery, Drain the engine oil, and remove the lower heat shield if you want. It may make it easier to see if you do. Remove the old oil return line.
2. Compare the end of each return line that connects to the bottom of the turbo housing. The 1g line bolt holes are closer together. Note the amount of material that will have to be taken off of the new return line.
3. Put the return line in a vice and slot the holes. First use a cutting blade to make the outside cuts and then the grinding blade, which is the perfect size to finish off the inside of the slots. Repeat for the other side. Be careful not to gouge the sealing surface too much when grinding.
4. Compare the finished slots to the gasket you will use. Make sure you took off enough material. Take off too much and you will not be able to make a seal.
5. Use high temp silicone on the gaskets and bolt the new return line up. Let sit 24 hours for the silicone to cure and you are ready to go. The new return should bolt up without difficulty as the the new return is the exact same length and angle as the old return.

It is a good idea to buy new gaskets as well as the two little crush washers that should be used on the oil pan flange before you start. This is common sense, but I will say it anyways.
