I have'nt posted in a while but i'm looking at a 98 gsx and the guy tells me after 3 or 4 hard passes the tranny gets hot and sometimes It will pop out of first gear. It's a stock tranny with welded diff and he's running 75/90 gear oil in it. I really want to believe it does'nt need a full rebuild. What do yall think?

Thanks, Nathan

I think the guy is full of shit

Lets just say a properly working transmission won't pop out of gear because it gets hot after a few passes

Sounds like possibly a mid adjusted clutch that is causing engagement issue as the clutch warms up. I would try and take a look it yourself and see where the engagement point is at cold then see where it's at warmed up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't that effect all gears and not just 1st?

Another guy that's a friend friend of mine said it drives fine. The only time it messed up is when he's racing it at the track. He also said that he didn't think it happened till he welded his diff

The transmission likely needs to be torn down and see where the problems are. It would likely require a rebuild and you would also want to confirm condition and clearance of shift lever and cable linkages shift cable bushings, front and rear motor mounts, along with the clutch assembly.

I didn't even notice he only said first gear. That makes sense, complete tear down like what Tim said is what I recommend!

1st gear issues like that normally point to smoked intermediate shaft bearings and potentially gear and case damage.
