I've been trying to find out what emissions effect, if any, the HKS 264/272 cams have. I have been told that these will make your car emissions illegal, in California, but that may or may not be simply because they do not have an EO# assigned to them. I've seen one post on this board that indicated one person had to remove them to pass emissions in another state.

If you put these cams into an otherwise well functioning car and tune it properly, what would an emissions person see when they stick an analyzer in the tailpipe? Will the idle RPM be out of range, will it be running rich, or will the lumpy idle just be too hard to ignore?

Note that this is a purely hypothetical question as it would be illegal, immoral, and just all around not green to actually perform such an experiment.

Thanks!

cams dont have that much affect on emisions its your idle that gets affected and the guy may or may not know whats up. i knwo some people that have passed smog on web cams dont know of any that have passed with hks cams. i wouldnt take the chance though.

Get em and just have somebody that will pass you cause the lumpy idle is too much to ignore. Either that or good luck putting them on and taking them off along with all your other mods come smog time. I live in MOnterey and any mod is illegal here and it sucks balls but hey theres ways around anything.

jpolizo: did you already upgrade your turbo to fp green like you mentioned in your profile?

Thanks for the info; a mechanic friend (who builds RX7s) also thinks the emissions shouldn't get too whacked just by cams. It sounds like the problem is idle related.

I have not upgraded the turbo yet and this is all part of the decision process. I'm faced with finding a friendly and knowledgable smog station, trying to stay real stealthy (like an FP Big28 instead of the Green w/o cams -- big let down), or doing swaps if things don't pass. It sounds like the cams don't fit the stealth model, so that goes into the buying decision. I'm also looking into those right now because I've got the head off and figured it might be a good time to do it.

Pretty much everyone I've asked has indicated the "ways around anything" model, but finding a local solution is tough and I have not yet succeeded.

Thanks for the info again; this is a great board.

I've heard that smog stations in santa cruz is easier than others in the bay area... but then this is all i heard, and never tested my car here yet. I'm a little worried as well, since i have to pass one in july/aug.

Yeah, I've heard all kinds of stories too. A friend failed the visual pre-test even though he was blowing 0's out the tailpipe which is kind of interesting. What the heck are they testing for: compliance with vacuum hose coloration? He took it to the dealership and they passed it fine.

The race shops I've spoken with all say "most people know a friend of a friend ..." but have never heard of such a place themselves.
