1st gen on a 2nd gen

i was wondering if a 14b on a 2nd gen would be a good idea or if it will improve the performance or not. what are the major differences between the two turbos?

Try doing a search on a 2g 14b swap, it's always a good idea to do a search on the board before hand. But yes it will work and you would need a garret to a mitsubishi adapter plate. Once you search and read through some threads youll see what i am talking about.

You will not need an adapter plate... the T25 that mitsubishi uses, is designed with a standard mitsbusihi exhaust side -- has the same exact bolt pattern as the other "mitsubishi" turbo's (13b, 14b, 16g, b16g... etc).
