I am wanting to put a ratchet shifter in my 1g and had a few questions.

1. I was planning on following this guide http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/automatic-tranny/290705-how-install-ratchet-shifter-dsm.html
and buy a Hurst Promatic 2 Ratchet Shifter but i wanted to make sure if i install the ratchet shifter i can take out my TCU correct? Since it will all be manually shifting via the ratchet shifter.
2. Is there a better shifter that is close to the same price? This one in my area at Advanced is 169.99.
I really wouldnt mind having to shift if myself with no Drive operation.
Or would it be better to keep the TCU?

Thanks

Personally for a street car, I would buy a Shift box and stick with the TCU. Or just get an EPROM TCU and have it mapped to your liking. Its not simple to get the shifter functioning properly Plus there is internal trans work that needs to be done with the solenoids. Research the "Kiggly manumatic mod"

Yes you can completely remove the TCU and no there isn't any internal work on the trans to be done. I have a B&M pro stealth ratchet shifter in my 1G.

Yes I didn't think there was any internal mods you have to do!
So u just installed the shifter and pulled the tcu and shift it manually? With The hurst promatic 2 you pull it back to downshift and forward to upshift . I would like one setup the opposite where upshift is pulling it back and downshift is pushing it forward.
Also any shifter will work that has 4 selectors correct? I believe the b&m u have has a drive do u have that setup for 4th?

No you still have to rewire the solenoids that are on the valve body and wire in diodes. The solenoids are what control shifting since the trans has an electronic valve body. Its pretty simple and there is a write up on kigglys website. The only think you'll need to do to the actual valve body is adjust the pressure screws to the valve body which is easy as well and there is a writeup for that as well on kigglys website. As far as changing how the trans shifts, no you can not change it. You still have to shift it like factory. P/R/N/D/2/1 and you'll have to wire a switch for OD. I used the power/economy button as my OD switch. You'll also need a 3 speed (1,2,D) shifter, a shifter designed for a 2 speed powerglide won't work.
