Hi guys
I just recently started modifying my 93 Eclipse and I had a few questions for those of you that might know:

1) Is it possible to just get rid of the MAS Air Sensor? I wanna have a cold air intake custome made. I've read about putting the resistor thingy but I really don't know how reliable that is or other shit it might cause.

2) I have the tiny 1.8 NT engine. Eventually I might just get a factory turbocharged DSM but there's still a possibility that I'll just get an engine swap. The question is, will the headers and exhaust piping that I get for this engine fit the 2.0T engine?

3) What fuse do I have to remove to reset my ECU? Ever since I removed the catalityc convertor and the air box and left the filter hanging out my RPM's have been unstable.

Thanks all!

Answer to #2. Sorry, they are two entirely different motors. I have researched the swap (I too own a 1.8), and it will be easier and cheaper to purchase a 4g63 car. No parts are interchangeable.

Gary: Yeah it does. My brother owns one. I thought GS-T would look better than NT :p

Nutshot: Thanks man! I'm still considering the swap though...I have several friends that own repair shops and what not...but ultimately it will be whatever's cheaper.

How about removing the MAS? Any hints there? I'm dying to just take that thing off...

I also still need to find out about the fuse thing to reset the ECU. I don't wanna disconnect the negative from my battery cause it'll reset my radio presets and blah...I'm lazy.

Any feedback will be greately appreciated.

To remove the MAS you'll need to run a VPC or standalone ECU, though I wouldn't suggest making that investment with the 4g37 powerplant.

The fuse to clear the ECU is the one at the bottom right of the driver's kickwell fuse box, assuming the 1.8 has the same fusebox as my AWD. I'm willing to bet it does.

This will also shut off your interior lights, radio, and such.

MAF removal: I ahev this strange feeling you don't have a full understanding of the way a Karman MAF works, so here you go. This is copied from a thread I typed up at www.racingknowledge.com a little while ago:

In the main passageway (the one you leave the honeycomb in) of the MAF, there is an ultrasonic sensor, besically a speaker and a mic. As air flows though the MAF, it creates "Karman Vorticies", which cause disruptions to the signal from the sensor, and allow it to "count" the amount of air flowing through. I believe that what is really being calculated is the speed at which the air is flowing through the MAF, from which the ECU can derive volume (and hence mass) because there is a known value for the surface area of the "measured" passage, and a know ratio of the "measured" space to the "unmeasured" space.

This is why hacking a MAF makes you run leaner.... the ECU multiples the mass through the metered section by what it thinks is the constant, but you have altered the true total area, so there is more air actually flowing through.

If you've read this far, you get rewarded! I dug up some cool animations of actual Karman vorticies:

Basicially, the signal coming from the MAF is a square wave signal, and the frequency at which it oscillates is what determines the airflow. In order to remove the MAF, you need something to generate a frequency that is calibrated correctly to the stock MAF in relation to the amount of airflow entering the motor.

The headers off your turbo car are replaced by the turbo itself if you were to swap in a turbo motor. If you did this, you would also need a turbo transmission, and other smaller stuff. Also, it would make sense to just put an aftermarket exhaust built for a turbo car on there, rather than trying to make it fit the stock exhaust.

I personally would buy an AWD rather than doing all that.

Eric, Kyle: Thanks for the information guys. That was very informative. I think I will just get a Turbo AWD.
I'll stick with the 1G though. Everybody down here in Miami just seems to have a 2G...with carbon fiber altezzas, projector headlamps, Onderground Designs Raptor kit and a matching spoiler it'll look great...plus it's a lighter car. Thanks again!

Actually, it would look great without all that stuff. The word you're looking for, I think, is ghey.
