Well I wanted to make a thread to show each step of the way as I do my automatic to manual swap on my 1996 Eclipse GSX. I will probably post new info and pictures up everyday of things I did on the car, problems I had, etc. I hope some people will watch my progress and comment on it.

Day 1-

The first thing I did is make up a parts list of everything I will need to get for the swap.

2g AWD 5-speed transmission PURCHASED

Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate PURCHASED

OEM throw out bearing PURCHASED

2g 5-speed T-Case PURCHASED

2g 5-speed Rear Differntial (LSD)

2g Clutch Pedal Assembly PURCHASED

2g Brake Pedal Assembly PURCHASED

2g Shifter Base

2g Shifter Cables

2g Clutch Master Cylinder PURCHASED

2g Clutch Reservoir with firewall bracket

2g Clutch Line PURCHASED

2g Clutch slave cylinder PURCHASED

2g Shift boot

More things will probably get added to the list as I go along. I put purchased next to the things I already have. I think it is pretty cool that I located just about everything I needed to do this swap in about 24 hours except the rear differential.

Anyways, I am buying a trans that has a broken shift fork so I am taking that to the repair shop to get fixed. I also got the transfer case with the transmission so they are matching years (both 97).

I got the slowboyracing SS braided clutch line from master to slave.

I bought the clutch and brake pedals off of ebay for 40 dollars.

I think I am going to go with extreme psi's OEM shift cables so I have new stuff to work with.

Anyways, I started off with the easy stuff- Removing all of my auto stuff in the interior such as the shifter assembly, shift cable, brake pedal lock cable, ignition lock cable, and brake pedal assembly. I also got the TCU out with a little bit of work, it is a very tight area to work in:mad:

Here's some pictures of the car so far:

Anyways, just thought I would make this thread to keep you guys up to date on my progress as I go along if anyone is interested. And also, hopefully this thread will also serve to help me get any questions answered that I might need throughout the swap. Wish me luck:sneaky:

You are also going to need a 5 speed starter. The auto starter doesnt "reach" as far as the 5 speed into the flywheel ring gear.

5 speed starter is on the left below.

Also, I would just get a shift boot from eBaymotors. Brand new and fit great.

Dont forget to grab up an OEM fork and pivot ball also.

You might as well replace the rubber mounts on the shifter and cables with the bearings and washers while youre at it.

EDIT - I should also mention that a right angle drill with the appropriate hole saw will be your best friend when drilling the firewall to accept the clutch master.

There is no other way in my mind. Unless you want to spend 3.46 days under the dash in a pornographic position, get a 90* drill and holesaw.

Flywheel bolts! The auto ones are too short, and make sure you have a throwout bearing clip.

Also, you need a manual vss if your trans doesnt already have one as well as the passenger side motor mount and rear motor mount. The front mount is a direct bolt on.

Flywheel, but Im sure you already knew that.

Thought I would add this too.

The front axles are different.

drivers side IS the same
auto intermediate shaft is 3/4 longer than the manual one
auto passenger side is 3/4 shorter

So add a 95-99 passengers side axle and driver intermediate shaft to the list.

Thank you, I saw that info from another thread, and I think I have already located the intermediate shaft and the passenger axle so should be good.:thumb: I hope.:|

I just finished up my 5 speed swap today...the car feels so much stronger and faster!
Although on my FWD the starter looked the same, but i picked up a m/t one anyway, and the starter plate needs no modifications, both of my axles fit in no problem, although I am still waiting for my rear mount bracket, and I accidently did a burn out and had some wheel hop, now i need new CV joints :D

Ah, Im selfish, I only think about AWD. :p Good info though.

So the 2g A/T passenger side tranny mount only needs 3 nuts. The M/T mount requires 4 nuts. Where do you all get the extra nut? I can't find it.

Also, I have been wondering how the reverse lights come on. I haven't heard anything about those.

I can't wait. I waited all summer to do the swap in the winter so I could enjoy my new turbo during the summer. Well, I hardly enjoyed it and the tranny was slipping way too much and was VERY difficult to reach 20mph. I hope this M/T fixes things.

That reminds me.

The MT mounts (for AWD at least) are different. The front is the same but the rear and the passengers side are different.

Dealership. Or Mitsubishiparts.com.

They can be wired to work. I figured it out about a year ago, let me see if I can find it.

Alright. I couldnt find it so I mocked it up again. Someone might want to verify this by trying it.

Veiwing the PRNDL switch connector from the back (notice on the bottom of the diagram) 5 & 6 should be the wires for the reverse lights. Wire the 5 & 6 wires to the backup connector on your manual tranny and you should be good to go. The diagram should work for a 95-99 turbo.
