Yanked the motor, and awaiting time to tear down then inspect/measure the bores and pistons on the original 100k+ motor. Hoping to get by with fresh bearings and piston rings...we'll see.

Need to drop the rear diff, pack it up along with the trans ans T case and ship to TRE in Michigan for a rebuild/freshen up.

Dropped the starter and high amp alternator off for a freshen up/rebuild.

You've got a sweet car there bro. I like the pick where the truck is pulling it, and I know if it was running already, that would be a great pull match, especially with AWD. Keep us updated once you figure out the engine some more. With TN having smog checks idk if it's worth much tbh although I love the car. If you put $3000 in it right now, it would be worth approx $3000 due to not being able to upgrade. Smog changes everything. If you're trying to restore if as a classic (stock) it's an equal battle. You could drop $8000 in it and get a resale value of about the same. There is no gain here other than driving it at 195 hp (and definitely struggling with smog). 195 hp back then was on 93 octane and I believe most states have 92 all you can get now. Keep us updated and move forward no matter if you end up keeping it or not. You're in the right place DSM forum. I'm in Cali now or i'd buy it. Years ago I had modded 93 Talon Tsi with a 92 engine in it and it was great, probably putting out upwards to 280ish hp for the time, 17 years ago

Well, finally got to dive into the belly of the beast and the rear cross member...she's a bit chewey with some *weight reduction*. But, all things considered, not bad for a PA car.

I've got to say, the hardware on these cars are top notch. Surprisingly things came apart without much of a fight. Only issues were passenger rear inner bushing where it meets the stud, froze to the stud, yay. Hammered it with some Kroil, little heat, used a pick to get the space between the stud and inner bushing sleeve opened up as much as possible. What worked after all that was to use vise grips and hammer the nose of them to shock the bushing sleeve free from the stud.
Just like that, I was able to easily lower the K member down, nice!!!

Only other small snag was one of the mustache bar bolts was so rusty I had to pound a 16mm socket on to get it off. Like I said, not bad, I'm impressed. Try that with your 30 year old GM car driven in PA. Ha!

Now that the Trans, transfer case, and rear diff are all out, I'll be boxing them up and sending to TRE (Team Rip Engineering) in Michigan for a refresh.
Might as well 100% it while I'm here.

Please take a look at the upper sub frame mounts, do you think I can salvage the upper control arm mount area? I'll have to find some pics to see what it looks like stock. Definitely doing the toe Elim kit, and probably the Volk uppers.
The lowers are so rough might have to go Raybestos or Dorman on these.

Well, the turbine housing looks like she gave up the ghost...damnit. Oh well, time to look for something a little larger that won't be too big/ have lag for auto x/ street.

Big 16g or 20g?

Man, the subframe camber bolts have been a pain in the ass! Haha, but with some patience, heat, plenty of Kroil they all came out without needing to be cut or broken!

Looks like the sleeve will need to be cut out and the exhaust pipe method used to shim them up may be in order. I'll know as as soon as I have the bushings in hand.

All the rear ball joints are tight so I'll probably leave them. All new poly bushings..etc. Still need to yank the gas tank and get a new filler neck as this one is toast.

Getting there! One step at a time.

Dang man that's awesome you're so close. Too bad that didn't work out, haha. How's the DSM community up there? Seems like a strong following up in the north/northeast.

Yep he's really cool in person ill be at the shootout. Let me know ill be there with my 1gb this year finally. Its really a good time . I' made a lot of friends going.

Cool, I bet! He's got some pretty good vids. Yeah, man, that's awesome you'll be there in your 1Gb, too! I bet, seems like a solid community for sure.
Haven't checked to see if the 23 date has been released yet, got to mark the calendar. 🤘🤘

Finally made some time to drop the tank, again, without breaking any bolts! Woohoo!

When people say DSMs are *unreliable*... look at that *custom* wiring job! 😂😂😂

Filler neck, well, she's thin and has some pin holes. Anyone have a nice clean AWD one they'd be willing to sell?

Also, good news, the tank looks solid and only needs a quick cleaning inside and a little rust converter on the exterior lip!

1 step closer to doing some boosted pulls on those crisp cool evenings.

Figures there'd be DSMers in Chattanooga now. I went to culinary school like a billion years ago in Nashville, and my wife(girlfriend at the time) went to college in Ooltewah/Collegedale. I'd visit her regularly in my old Gray 1G, and never would see any others.

Will have to see how this year goes, but if the Talon is buttoned up and where I want it, I may drive it to the shootout this year for the anniversary.

Ha! No way? Cool, man!
Weird the DSMs don't appear to be very popular down in the Southeast. We're originally from PA and they're huge up there.
Dude, hell yeah that'll be kick ass if you do! I'd love do the same, just hoping to having it running and driving by this year.

It's always been that way. Chicago and the NE would always have a massive DSM scene, and the south was generally smaller. They weren't as rare as they are now, but it was nothing like the north/northeast scene. The Midwest was absolute king for awhile though.

I keep holding out hope for an explosion of DSM culture and popularity and parts....sigh. I miss the old days.

Man, with regular work I've been busier than 1 legged cat trying to bury a shit, on ice! Hahaha.

Getting some time in on the Talon but not as much as I really would like. But, hey, progress is progress.

Wire wheel'd all the unibody seams, sprayed everything with rust reformer, and even got a coat of flat black on there before temps went to shit again.
For a 30 year old PA car, it's surprisingly not bad at all!

Hit the tank with some cleaner, washed it, some rust reformer, then a coat of flat black as well.

What are you guys doing for a fuel sender? I've yet to test it but I'd be shocked if it worked at all. RTM, or fabri-cobble something together??

Seen that one, looks great. Says on their site about the sending unit (for the fuel guage);
"Be assured that the fuel gauge sending unit is NOT included with your sending unit under any circumstances."

Need to find a new fuel guage sender, or fabri-cobble a new (other) unit.

That RTM unit sure is sweet though.
