I was thinking more of the rear strut on the drivers side, but looking back through the pictures, it looks like the padding just melted from the heat and not that the metal was effected that far into the trunk area.

Thanks man, Yeah the tar was bubbled a little is all, no worries there. Most of the stuff Im stripping on the inside is just to not have a smell come back. My worst fear is to open the car with it sitting in the summer time and smelling a fire car. Its gotten better over the year and a half of sitting and going through it, but the smell was pretty strong at first.

So...I kind of hit a roadblock on the car. I had it in primer surfacer, which would be a water barrier, but I couldn't sand into it until I was ready for primer sealer, and after sealer I only have a 2 day window before painting, which I couldn't afford paint yet. So I jumped onto my 2G Talon and getting that finished. Finally, after months and months, it is done!


Why am I mentioning this in my GVR4 thread? Because now I can concentrate more on the Galant, and selling this car will be funding a lot of the finishing touches for the fire car, such as getting the back window installed, rear speakers, an EWG cutout, plate transfer, insurance, etc. You see folks, I am a broke college student/single dad. The money I do get comes from either sidejobs, or selling cars/parts, so getting rid of this car is big news since it will work as my "summer stimulus package"...
So here is the paint I will be using

So I sanded down the surfacer, saw where I needed more


The right I hadn't sanded all the way yet, so I got through on all the problem areas


Then I can't tell if my hands/eyes are playing tricks on me, but it seemed the area by the gas cap was a little low. So I took it down for some bondo.



I did a thinner coat of primer surfacer that was cut down. Should be its last coat before sealer/base/clear

So yeah my eyes were playing tricks on me...The quarter was right the first time. So I took the bondo back down, more primer surfacer.



Then I did a final bit of sanding everywhere and got it ready for spray


I waited until early in the morning when conditions would be better and got to it






The clear activator I was using was slow, 85*+ it wasnt quite hot enough for that, so when I was laying it down thick enough not to orange peel, I got a few runs. Not the end of the world, itll all buff out, just more work for me.



At this point, gonna move the car out and do the rear bumper and trunk lid. After that it can all go together. All for now, thanks

So my offerings this time around... I had some runs on the right quarter, and I knew they'd be a bit of a pain on not breaking through sanding them down, so I had to reclear a bit on the sharp edges. I waited until I was actually painting something to do this part. I got to work on the trunk lid.

So I'll do the top of the trunk lid next, the bumper which I have pretty well sanded out, and I think I can start cutting/buffing and assembly then. Im so ready for this thing to be done...My daily is my supra which is a hot tin can, and a 13 sec car gets boring after a while, I just wanna go fast!

I wanted to sand this down and do at least primer sealer tonight, but the surfacer was taking too long to dry, didnt wanna chance hitting it too early and messing it up. So, until tomorrow

My daily thread bump . I light sanded parts of the sealer with 800, sprayed base, then I ran out of clear, at the worst possible time (money wise) if this talon doesn't sell soon Im gonna be in trouble. If anyone wants this clean ass Talon please give me a holler! I literally took change back, and arranged for college book buybacks so I was able to pick up more clear. The good news is that I have medium activator, that is more suitable for my conditions! I was stuck with slow, 85*+ activator, which would run if I ever laid it on the way I wanted. The bumper turned out pretty awesome, Im thinking by the time Im done I will be sick of bodywork, (since I already am now) but a much better painter with what I've learned on this one. Heres some pics

So I made some progress, but I still feel like this update is full of fail. I wanted to make the deadline of getting the car running for our cruise week stuff, wasnt trying for finished, just running/driving, so went nuts trying to get friends together to make it happen, then came to grips that it couldn't. Once the trunk lid was painted, I didnt like how the wing turned out, it was short on clear in spots, so I recleared it. Then started assembly, put the wing on the trunk lid, put the LED bar back in, tail lights in, weatherstripping, trunk springs (ug that sucked ass) then I trailered it to the shop. From there I installed the rear bumper, and despite not touching it for a day after paint, it managed to get a couple nicks when the paint was still soft apparently. Pretty pissed about that one. I didnt take a lot of pics cause it was just go go go for a few days.

I took off the fuel pump hanger, installed the 255 hp, the flare fitting was rusted bad enough that I just cut the feed line, flared each end, and did a section of fuel injection hose/clamps.


Then I wired in the rear harness. Some got solder, some got heatshrink butt connectors once I got lazy. I was 99% sure the harness came from a 91 VR4, but the colors werent looking exactly right, some colors were repeated more than once, so I had my doubts on it being right. The results of all these wires going together was....absolutely nothing! Nothing worked at all. No lights, no fuel pump, gas gauge, blinkers, brake lights, nothing. I troubleshooted a little and checked fuses/relays, and saw power going back to the connections on the harness for the green/white wire for parking lights, which was the same color for all the rear parking lights, but just saw no power. Im gonna have to test continuity on each component Im wiring in (fuel pump, lights, etc) and go the extra mile to make sure its right. I thought I could get lucky and just match color to color from what I thought was the same car, but nope. Went back to the hot wire for the fuel pump and parked the thing for the night. I expected something major in the rear wiring for it to just not have anything work, first thing I jumped to was fuses/relays, they are good but I wasnt seeing power at the actual tail lights when I had them on, I checked a few grounds and they were good. Was limited on what I could do since the batteries in the DVOM were dead, and I was pretty butthurt at the time so just jumped onto other things for now... I moved to the front, and had to "unstock" more things This car sure is taking forever, but at least it will be anything but stock when its done! First thing was install and wire the other pusher fan, and pop the grill in, after that is me taking out the stock GVR4 headlights, pulling the HIDs out of my 1Gb dsm housings, putting them into 93 Galant housings, and installing.


There were a few burnt out corner lights, so I popped in some LEDs in place


One side for comparison. The phone makes them look a lot more blue than they really are, they're 55w ballasts with 6k bulbs.





That was it for tonight, obviously not a priority but I guess I needed to feel like I accomplished something before dealing with this rear harness some more. Thanks for reading!

So my Talon is selling, I had to wash it for the new owner. Figured I would go ahead and wash the front of the GVR4 too and get some pics together. It was SOOOO bad!


That moment youre washing your car but the ground looks like youre wet sanding! haha



Its nice to have two running 4G63s...even if only one drives.


Itll be nice to give this thing a good cut/buff/polish when its all said and done. I know it will clean up nice and should match the new to old paint pretty well.
After that I helped my buddy pull his engine out. It had seen some better days.



Always have an oil light is the moral of this story. Oil filter worked its way loose and it geysered out. All for now! Take care

Big things tonight! First of all, the 2G is gone to a good home, and my summer stimulus package is in effect!
So I bought some windshield polyurethane, scraped all the old glue off the old window, and glued that thing in. Next, I installed the trunk lid. Unfortunately, even with the springs put to their higher setting hole (I imagine its spoiler vs not) they dont hold the trunk lid up. I'll look into if they are put in right, but when I tried turning them around from left to right it just seemed wrong. So then... was all the lighting that has been giving me troubles for the last few nights. Was getting very frustrated since it just seemed like nothing worked... I started back on it once the trunk lid was on and actually lit up with parking lights. Well I feel kinda dumb for saying this...but I missed the plug down by the ABS box for the harness at that point. I saw it before and kept passing it off as power antenna (dont have anymore) but no it was important for my sanity apparently. So plugged in, parking lights worked, and fuel gauge worked! What still didnt work was fuel pump (I have been using a wire straight from the battery to get in/out the shop) blinkers. For these, its just a matter of having the identical color wires wrong... There are 2 bl/wh large gauge wires, and 2 gr/l wires. Switched those are we were happening! Did LEDs for the license plate lights, tidy'ed up the rear harness one last time....AAAHHHHH



I got the door courtesy lights working, then I even had some time to start running the wires for the amp. Have I mentioned this thing is gonna have a mean ass system? So yeah... running 00ga wire, patch cables, etc all through the door sill areas. Got the trunk to latch but still need to get lock cylinders matched on everything. Next step will be doing the fuel pump rewire to 10ga, then I can actually just start working my way forward of vacuum, and install carpet/interior. I no longer need a tarp, or a hard wire from battery to fuel pump! I feel like that is a giant accomplishment, so much so that I took the key and put it on my keychain with the rest so it left with me, since someone could actually drive this thing away now! Heres how shes looking.

Wow thats a good price for one. There are ones that randomly pop up for sale and disappear as kind of the norm with these Keep your eyes open youre sure to find one.

So tonight was a lot more of the same...Running wires, I ran the 00ga and 10ga through the firewall, I picked a bracket for the evap canister for this. Cut the bracket off, drilled it through, and will grommet it once its ready to be finished.



The other side was patch cables, remote wire, etc.


Then was vacuum and clean it all up, and lay the carpet down.


Rewired the fuel pump with the relay, did a power dist block just for my power inverter (charging laptop and such)


Put the MSD wires in, the dynatec ARC2 box, pulled the rail to put in the 2150s, wired in the different injector plugs, injector resistor bypass, all that cool stuff.


All the wiring will get loomed and cleaned up when its all finished. I ended the night with wiring up the clutch cut wire, and starting on the wideband wiring. Will tap into the ecu pins, mount the ecu, throw the seats in next. Not much longer!

Sorry for not an update for a bit... I kinda decided to cheat on the galant for a weekend, my supra has been on a stock turbo, and if you know anything about the CT26 you would understand my pain, think of a T25. So I threw together another Holset setup for it, went with an HX35 this time around. I was 90% done after one night at the shop so wasnt much work at all, and the results are awesome thing is a beast! Full spool 3600 and tries to spin 3rd gear


But anywho, we are here for Galant talk not Toyota. I had a good night on it tonight. Let me give you a quick history lesson of this engine and my 1G, basically it was together in the form it is in May of 2015, and I ran it on E85 until august when it started to show fueling issues. It was swaying on the lean side and I was having to add fuel. It would be okay for a pull, then need more, and more, and more, until it wouldn't do much except idle! It didn't even have 1k miles on it I dont think at that point. I couldn't track it down, it had great fuel flow, I ran 92oct through it to flush through any E85 varnish which I was told thats all you needed to do. It was to no avail, still ran like crap, and that was what ultimately lead me to pulling the plug on my 1G. So, the car had been driving in/out the shop ok on stock injectors (as good as a car with no wideband and rough tuning would) but ever since I put the 2150s in I noticed it was back to running like poop, choppy idle, dying out if I gave too much gas, acting lean as hell and it barely even made it into the shop. I was so fed up I just needed to take a minute to chill. I decided I would work on the filter to rail setup tonight, so I started pulling the stock fuel filter and breaking down my -6 stuff to make something work. I talked to my dad about how I was 99% sure my damn near new injectors were clogged already, and he mentioned I should MotorVac the thing. It was a good time for that since I already had the fuel feed stuff open, so I just unhooked the return side, pushed the car outside and let it run on the cleaner machine. I noticed first off that Ive got myself a turbo inlet leak, probably due to loose bolts (YAY!!!) BUT, the second thing I noticed was the idle cleaned up right away! Thing settled down to a 900 RPM romp romp romp the way I was used to on the 272s. I let it run for about 20 min on the stuff, I was paying attention to temp and wasnt sure if the fans were gonna turn on as they should and I didnt have a laptop to log everthing so shut it down there just past halfway on the temp gauge.


I snapped the throttle a few times and it was responsive as it should be, it definitely cleaned up some crap lingering in those FIC 2150s. Whats weird is I was running: A pickup sock, a coarse inline filter, and then a stainless canister -6 filter which I thought was pretty adequate. Not sure if it was actually particles or varnish causing it, but I might look into this in the future if it gives me anymore trouble. I took apart the fuel filter to check it out, it was clean, cut a line or two down and hooked it all up. (Ignore the orange, I didnt wanna get the in/out mixed up)


Then I did its first boost leak test


Had a T clamp that was overhanging a coupler a bit and that was a leak, fixed that and it held very nice. I only tested up to 10 psi or so, ever since I had a tester pop off of my supra and almost break my nose Ive been a little paranoid to crank it up, especially with no bead on this tubo inlet. This was 10 psi and it packed a helluva wallop


I will be building an add on for a regulator that I can dial up and be constantly pushing air in that I can turn up from a safe distance away for when Im ready to test for man boost. While I was doing all this my buddy was working on installing the rear seatbelts, so the interior is getting in order as well. He was also nice enough to give me a flat water pump pulley from his EVO 1 engine, since I was talking about how much easier it would be to take on/off than the recessed style. I also did a grommet for the wires running through the firewall. I think for next time I will get a 10 micron -6 filter, since I honestly dont even remember what this one is rated for, then will work on mounting it up. Sorry for still just slowly going along on this thing, I know its right there but I want it to be right and not rush these important last details!! Thanks for reading

So for this offering, I made a summit order, got the aeromotive -8 filter glass element, that filters down to 6 micron, with adapters down to -6, that way if I ever go to -8 in the future I wont need another filter. Still need to fab up a mount bracket for it.


After researching my problem on the FIC injectors, I decided a good thorough cleaning would do the trick, since the injectors are so fresh that they would perform great once cleaned. I actuated with a 9V battery, and back flushed them with carb cleaner. A surprising amount came out, and keep in mind this is after the motorvac so that the car would even run, I wonder how bad they were before. Also keep in mind, the naked eye can only see down to 40 micron, and anything down to 10 is harmful, so theres much more here that we dont see.


I pulled off the mani and replaced the T3 gasket, and resurfaced the flange a bit. The gasket that blew was a composite, so the one piece stainless went on, much more reliable.


It still has the sound of an exhaust leak since everything after the downpipe is just tacked up so far, will tidy it up here shortly once its up in the air again. Thats all for now! Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Well I was amazed I got so much done last night, with two of my buddies helping we were able to knock out a lot of things on the list! While I did wiring on the gauges, my buddy did rear seatbelts, and another did wire mesh for a radiator guard as well as upper support. I'm equally amazed I only got one pic of everything, but there wasn't a lot that was proving photo worthy to be honest. I changed glove boxes to one without a crack, and gave the old one to a buddy that is going to 3D print the gauge pod in it. Ran the wires for the wideband, recalibrated it, tapped into the ecu pins for that and clutch cut, mounted ecu, laid carpet down, put most of the plastic in. As I started to follow the thread on installing evo rear seats, I realized my 03 lancer seats won't work, due to the backs being 4 piece rather than 3. If I drilled for all the brackets I guess I could make it work, but id rather just get a galant seat for now. I've got lock cylinders for the trunk/gas cap at the locksmith the last week getting them matched to the key. I would've taken the car down the block but forgot the laptop. I'm shooting to hit the track for a race the 30th as of now.

First order of business tonight, was fixing this AC plug, the wires were badly frayed and exposed, so solder, heatshrink.




Then since I figured I had a rack I could do some exhaust work, but quickly realized I needed a flange where I ended last time I was doing exhaust work. I called the Autozone down the street right before they closed, and asked for a 3", 3 bolt universal flange. They said yeah weve got it! So I came down, they handed me a gasket for one. I say no, I need the whole thing, the flange... Dude looks a little confused, then asks "what vehicle is it for?" Im like FUUUUUUUCK here we go... Hes gonna look up a universal aftermarket part by application that never came stock on any car ever... bid him a good day since I can just grab one from the exhaust shop tomorrow.
So then I fabbed up my fuel filter mount. It actually turned out great! Used the stock filter mount, and then you know the rubber coupler that goes in the intake tube to adapt the 14b turbo inlet, I used that as a sleeve, then did brackets to nearby bolts, painted the brackets up and called it a day.

Then I spent at least an hour tidy'ing up wiring. I ran so many feet of loom, grouping wires up, hiding unused plugs, tucking them under things... I still have a few to do in the firewall area, but the area by the battery is looking a thousand times better! Just need to find the high current fuse cover, and finish the battery mount. I just taped up the amp wire since we arent ready to be live there yet. Really liking the way this is starting to look!

Did a lot of everything tonight, mostly welding. I welded up the battery tie down, tacked up an exhaust flange and extended the exhaust to the rear end, realized no parts stores have U bends in stock, so stopped there, hung it all on the hangers, and dropped it to finish weld it all. Also took off the V band adapter since I suspected it was leaking, and rewrapped the downpipe.


Note the rounded off rear end fill plug. Whoever tightened that thing up didnt follow spec . Im just gonna pretend its full, since the 4 bolt is going in tomorrow anyways.




So Im just on a single 12" resonator right now. Im gonna make an order for another flange and U bends, so I can have another just before the muffler if I wanna change it out or drop it all together. Its far from sleeper, lots of turbo noise even at idle. Heres a sample.

So after putting the exhaust all back together, I had to bolt the seats down, and it was pretty much time to take her for a spin around the block!
I was taking some cruise logs, and it drove very nice! Handled a little bit like a boat on the stock worn suspension, but thats temporary. All the close by gas stations were closed, so I actually took the thing farther than I planned. Probably a good 6 mile round trip! When we made it to the gas station we washed all the windows inside and out, there was actually some soot in the windshield that I had wrote "fire car" in that had to go I was able to run through the gears the first time, and feel the EVO III 5th gear the first time, that was definitely nice. Im gonna have to do some fine tuning on the shifter, it has a little side to side play that needs to go. It was about 203* when we got there which was fine. I worked out all the closed loop fuel trim spots I had hit and worked on the cruise tuning, as well as checking the clutch cut wire and everything was working as it should. On the way back I got into some light boost and did a quick pull in 3rd up to 4300, it reached 13.8 psi and I cut it short (right when it was getting fun!) AFR was almost spot on, on SD even! Just needs a little fine tuning. Its nice driving a setup that was already tuned out from a previous car! Didnt get to wastegate open, so Im not sure how stiff this setup is gonna be, I like to safely work my way up in increments so Im not just going balls out on a bad tune. After hitting light boost however, I noticed the temps start to climb to the 213 area, and just kind of stay there. They got down to 210 on the highway, but it was obvious I need to help out this cooling system wherever I can. My fans werent turning on so I worked on wiring them for the rest of the night, as well as just checking everything out. Im leaving a little puddle from the rear steer lines that were just cut at the firewall, not a big deal given the plans tomorrow, which are: 5 lug, 1Gb dsm brakes, ground control coilovers, GR2 struts, 4 bolt rear, remove rear rack, toe elim kit, and adjustable UCAs, basically all the remaining goodies off my 1G. I called it a night with that, hopefully by this time next week I will be ready to hit the track and knock out some 11s, thats the plan!
Also this came in the mail, gotta get ready for the E85 tune by track day. Thanks for reading yall, more to come, but I can proudly say the fire car hit the road and got me back tonight!

Yeah the delta (HKS) 272s purr nice, but it doesnt help the sleeper attitude I was going for . I hope to get the forged engine with the Kelfords back together and in someday, they sounded even better! Ironic isnt it... As Im trying to play with a stock engine, I have a fully built one just sitting... Long story there that hopefully has a happy ending.

So I am absolutely exhausted at this point, its sunday, and I spent the entire weekend at the shop including friday. Went until 3am tonight, 5am yesterday, 3am the day before. Its absolutely amazing seeing the car taking shape though, and Ive got a friend who has been a total trooper helping that Im trying to teach the ins and outs of the DSM world along the way, he was there most of this weekend as well. This is the last weekend before I hit the track, so I had a billion things to finish, and I will probably be working until the very last minute and even doing pulls on the way to the track getting it all figured out! So lets see... From where we left off I took it on its first journey to get gas. I spent a very very long while getting the cooling fans worked out. What I wanted out of them seemed pretty simple, to come on from the thermoswitch automatically whenever key was on, as well as whenever the AC button was on. Well I dont know if GVR4 wiring is different here than 1G, but this gave me a ton of trouble! I followed what I thought was a good walkthrough on it, messed up somewhere, and smoked 2 wires a slight amount due to a short. It wasnt enough to pop a fuse and I was quick to get it under control, but I had to dig into the harness and replace all the bad wire which was about a foot worth.


At this point of trying to utilize factory wiring and hitting my head against the wall, I finally just hooked up a relay, and had the thermoswitch activate it whenever needed. So next was getting to addressing this drivetrain finally. What better way to address something than to take it completely apart!


Its hard to really show the magnitude of thrash going on just in one pic, but I feel these give a good idea.



So the plan was to basically just use the subframe, and the rest would all get swapped. Unfortunately I didnt get any pics of the goodies going in, but the basic rundown is 1Gb brakes, GR2 struts, GC coilovers, Jay racing toe elim kit, Afco adjustable upper arms, 4 bolt rear, and of course 5 lug. I wanted to fill the carrier bearings at this point as well, but I didnt have the 1-2 days of sitting it would require, as well as the silicone. I wanted to replace the rear U-joint, but that also go pushed off until a later date so I can do these at the same time.
One thing I was sure to do while it was going back together was shoving some extra window weld polyurethane into the stock mounts

I set height to a moderate drop but not down on its nuts, I dont wanna scrape or weaken axles at all due to drastic angles. That was the end of saturday night
Sunday I had to laugh at the pile of parts left over from it all.


Sunday consisted of tidying up all the wiring in the bay, there was a lot more exposed wires from all the cooling fan escapades. Lots and lots of taping, loom, and tucking. Also got the strut bar bolted in. I can proudly say that this is about how the engine bay is going to look for a while until I get bored and change something.


After that I drove it onto the drive on rack, and did the best kind of alignment I could at this time with a toe bar and digital angle finder. I could tell just by looking that the rear was toed in, and I was right! My 1G was more geared for a drag/street car, so it was 0 camber rear, but this one I went with -.5 so it could corner too. The outer tie rods were torn, so Im going to replace those later on before I get a 4 wheel alignment. So here she was after getting all squared away.


I wanted to take the car home tonight, so after a cooling system flush, I took it around the block to make sure all was well. I first noticed a ton of noise due to brake backing plates. The bigger brakes as well as jacking up setting everything in had them touching. Then I realized the thing still kept creeping in temp! I pulled back in at around 219, checked that fans were on (yes) and coolant was topped off (yes)...so I did the temporary fix for the night and took the hood off. Took it around again, and it hung around 206 which Im ok with. I lead the caravan home from the shop, and it was great to be boosting again!! Granted I can daily my turbo supra, but it isnt the same! With the few trips around the block I was able to get the WOT tuning a little more dialed, so I was able to get a little more bold and get to actual wastegate pressure, which is 18 psi. I still only took it to 5k though. Have I mentioned I love this EVO III 5th gear?! Man...

This with the bigger tires really has some good highway possibilities.
The EBC plumbing I went with this time around is totally different to me, I had always just pressurized the lower port and vented the top, but I got tired of running crazy stiff spring setups that werent good for pump gas and wanted something more well rounded. Here is how mine is plumbed other than Im not recirculating back into the intake tube.


With the EBC completely closed it is so far so good this way. The car handled really good, the spring rates are 450/350 F/R, it is a little bouncy so I may try some different struts like AGXs in the future, but the cornering is a thousand times better than stock thats for sure! So Im gonna go over my logs and work on winding down to sleep, thanks for reading everyone!
