hey guys i was hoping to get a BIG 16g for x-mas but things fell through so i was thinking aboot a ported 14b to hold me over till i can get a bigger turbo, what all is needed to install it and is it hard to do?

thanks

It's the same install as a 16g would be on the car. So you still need a mitsu install kit from someone like RRE.

you can re-use the water lines from your stock T-25. you just have to reverse them and bend a little. water feed line becomes water return line, and the water return line becomes the water feed line on the 14b, follow me? i think you can re-use the oil return line, but you will have to buy a new oil feed line. and you'll need a j-pipe to connect the compressor side to your lower intercooler pipe. check out www.roadraceengineering.com and look at their install kits. it'll take some DIY work but it's a cheap option for the hacker kit.

Make sure you have a couple of spare exhaust manifold bolts, they break quite easily. Also, make sure you soak all the bolts in WD-40 and have a breaker bar, it makes life much easier. If this is your first time with a more involved project, set aside a weekend to do it. I thought I would have mine done in a day but one turned into four with my car in pieces all over the garage. It works now if I could only get it tuned....

I am thinking of doing this same thing, I already have a 14b so I want to put it on my car. I knew that I would need the install kit, but I am confused about how the boost is going to work. The waste gate should be set at the stock setting? or should I be sure to have a boost controller? Also, I was wondering if a fuel pump upgrade would be needed to use this turbo, doesn't it flow more than the t-25?
1 more, is it going to bolt up to the 3in apexi dp? And if this causes boost creep, and I had that upgraded pump, everything would be ok right?

The Boost will work the same way, whatever boost you running now, will be the same boost with the 14b. If you want to take full advantage of the 14b you should have a boost controller, set at 15psi and you will love it. The 14b does outflow the T-25, but not by that much, with the stock fuel pump you should be able to run about 17-18psi before you hit fuel cut.

I installed a 14b in my car and to be honest there is not that much difference between the 14b and T25. I was very disapoited.
The difference that I found were:

T25: less lag, bad top end
14b: more lag, very good top end

If I was to do it again, I wouldn't do it, I would start saving some money for a Big 16G

Your right about saving for the 16g. I want a new turbo but I am not ready to start laying down the big bucks to support one of the bigger turbos. I was hoping to get a turbo that would let me start to slowly build up my fuel and the rest of my car. I know good power can still be made out of the 16g, but do you think I would be able to install it and try and keep the boost below 15psi with only say, a fuel pump? Because of my situation I cant buy everything at once, so I was thinking that if I had a nice turbo, with low boost, it would allow me to install the fmic, fuel, and stand alone so the car could be ready for that big turbo later. I am not sure if this is the best way to do things on a limited budget, but its all I can think of.

With a 16G installed in your car you should be able to run 15psi with only an upgraded fuel pump, more than that and your injectors will be maxed out, and you will hit fuel cut.

A 16G@15psi flows 25% more air than a stock turbo@15psi. you will notice a big difference.

I like the build up slowly idea... I went from a basic stock T25 running 13.9's consistently.

I then decided to do the 14b upgrade. One thing to say... if I saved up enough for the T28 I would have done that instead.. The install kit cost ~200 and the turbo ~200... The misc bolts etc, I was already at around $500. Just a few more and I could have gotten the T28.

Instead after the 14b I upgraded the fuel pump $100 and got a used 2nd gen s-AFC $250... now I can run low 13's with the 14b. So the car slowly gained speed and power... definately a difference with the 14b!

Now I'm looking for a 16g or 18g if I can get the right price... the thing is, most people are asking $400-500 for 16g's. I don't understand how they can ask so much.. there are BRAND NEW ones going for just over $500.. I'm looking to pay $250/300 max for a good turbo... all the good ones are disappearing.. who wants to take a chance on a 16g for $450 if it needs a rebuild soon, then you're out of luck for another $300.. yikes!

So after all the rambling... if you can get the install kit and 14b cheap, get it and you'll be happy. Or else, just save up $750 for the big T28!

I think I will buy the fuel pump and afc, then start saving my money from there. I really didnt want to buy parts and just let them sit around untill I can afford the turbo but I guess I have no choice. Since the fp28 and the 16g are pretty much the same, i would be able to run them on just that pump and an AFC, at 15 psi?

If you don't upgrade your fuel injectors, you won't even need an AFC, just keep a close watch on your gauges to make sure, what boost is safe to be running, the AFC is only usefull after you get bigger infectors to control the amount of fuel, so you won't run rich. With the stock 450, you don't have to worry about running rich, there is only so much fuel they can handle.
With a 16G @ 14-15 psi the stock injectors still provide enough fuel, you should be running perfect, with more boost you will lean out, not good

I just read about that on rre's site. It looks like I might be getting a new turbo sooner than I thought.

i also did the 14b swap on mine, i was very impressed since i paid only 100 bux for the turbo and ported O2 housing. Cheap and makes a nice difference, you will be happy. You won't have to worry about the turbo runnin outta juice at 6500rpms like the t25 does, itll hold till redline!!! good luck, just dont blow up your 14b like i did mine :)~ woops

14B $100

homemade install kit $30:
just use a little ingenuity...
J-pipe - freeI cut my stock lower ic pipe between the 2 90s and put in 10" long 2" I.D. exhuast tubing (midas pulled it out of the scraps bin and cut and welded beads on for free) fits perfect.
water lines - free reuse the ones you got off the t-25
oil drain - free file your bolt holes closer
oil feed - free since this is a used turbo, you don't have to worry about voiding the warranty so make your own line. cut the hardline going to the t-25 and also the hardline with the banjo bolt from the 14b. connect the 2 with some fuel injection hose and you have a feed line.
cheap and easy-save you 270 bux (cost me $30 for various lines and clamps to piece it together). pm me for more details if I forgot anything
