14b Is Installed, my thoughts.

For 2g guys that are swapping to a 14b, you need to remember that your not going to make as much power as a equally modded 1g 14b powered car does, simply because of the larger tb, intake manifold, and better flowing head that the 1g 4g63's have.

Should make about equal power, the 2g has higher compression.. The 1g should make VERY minimal more power than an equal modded 2g with the 14b.

Don't get me wrong, if you can't go bigger or money is looking tight for the future, than the 14b can make you happy. Until the $125 turbo blows up, the $10 radiator hose j-pipe blows off above 16psi, the ex-manny gaskets leak like a sive cause you re-used the old ones, not to mention the turbo/O2 gaskets. And your time and labor to pull it all off again, fix it, put it together, blow it up again......
I fully appreciate trying to do the cheap mods, but AT LEAST buy the necessary parts to do it right (like a j-pipe, gaskets, etc). In the end, rigging/hacking will cost you more than you bargained for. Anything worth doing is worth doing right (not that I'm saying the 14b is really worth it, IMO its not). Guys take some pride in your car and quit this ghetto stuff. That doesn't mean you have to have the shiny-intake, biggest turbo, latest core design FMIC, or greatest parts. It means whatever you do, try to do it as professionally as you can.

I dont know if you are talking to me, but here is what I used:

Ported 14b with 37k miles on it.
TRE 34mm Wastegate valve
Ported 2g exhaust manny
RRE 4 layer SS head to exhaust manny gasket
7cm SS manifold to turbo gasket
turob to o2 gasket
ALL new gaskets
new oil return line gasket
New SS oil feed line
New RRE 14b IC pipes.

I have seen about a 30 to 40 hp increase when a 2g has been out fitted with a 1g tb, intake manifold, and head with a 14b. That is a significant amount IMHO. I plan on doing the same with my set up, with the Big28. Good luck!!

No, 98Tsi, not referring to you:) Thats how you should do it!
I'm referring to the guys talking about $30-$50 installs. Hell, it almost costs $30 to refill your fluids after a swap (unless you run non-syn.), let alone the cost of parts (like j-pipe, gaskets, etc).
Don't anyone take offence, I'm not cutting anyone down, just warning the guys considering this that doing a hack install can end up sucking down the road.

You can go plenty fast on a 14b. Here is a video of a 14b powered 2g running [email protected]

How fast would this guy go if he had a real turbo on his car? So what if he pushes the limits of a 14B and gets 12.5, yeah thats impressive on that turbo, but that's not an impressive 1/4 mile time. If he has gone that far on a 14B his car would be so much faster with a larger turbo. Usually guys who know how to make a small turbo go fast really know how to make a big one go WAY faster...

Not trying to start a flame war over a 14B just saying buy the biggest turbo you can afford from the beginning if thats a 16G or a 20G you would be much better off. If a 14B is the biggest for your budget your still better off than the crappy T-25 no matter what.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

I totally agree with you. For me the 14b was just a quick smoking T2small replacement. I might actually keep running a 14b on the 98 tho now that I got this 95 to play with.

Im going for the 14b/2g upgrade soon. I will be going t3/t4 in the long run but thats going to be ALOT of money because I will need more mods like FMIC, LSD, then injectors and all the crap.

Just to add. My ported 14b hits full boost(only 8psi for now but still) at 2500rpm in 2nd gear. It may help that it's being pushed by a high compression motor though.

I love that little turbo. :)

gaskets cost all of 10 dollars, usually the exhaust manifold gasket is fine, the o2 and 6cm need replaced cuz they are pretty crappy usually

i gave my friend a couple bucks for a stock j-pipe and oil feed/return

thats bang for your buck, bottom line

where are the dyno sheets that support this statement...i mean, all things being equal, if you just add a 1g throttle body, intake manny, and head to a 2g, you're not going to see a 30-40 hp increase...maybe if the car is already making 400+hp, but not the average 16g powered car...

OK, now I see you have a 1G. This topic is about 2G-14b, which is entirely a different story (like I said you need a j-pipe, gaskets, OIL INPUT line, etc). A "$30" swap doesn't apply here. And.........
Where are you getting "bang for your buck". You've got a 1G, so you replaced the stock turbo with another stock turbo (thats a performance upgrade I guess)??? What the hell did you need a new j-pipe/return line for?? How about turbo bolts?? I know you reused those since YOU'VE GOT ONE SNAPPED OFF IN THE HOUSING RIGHT NOW. Know why it snapped?? Cause you torqued down some previously stretched-a** old bolt (that you stretched AGAIN by re-installing it) when it should have been discarded and a new one installed. It snapped when you tried to remove it, cause like I said, it was smoked junk. That couple of bucks "you saved" by not buying new turbo-bolts was sure worth it, huh??. Now you get to re-do the job. Did you get a new oil input line or just reuse that nice coked up one?? I'm guessing you used the old one since you spent $30 on this "swap", and generally oil input lines cost more than that.
Since 98% of the 2G's aren't going to have 1G friends giving them their old parts, getting the whupped parts for a couple bucks from a buddy is not feasible (for most). Therefore, it is going to cost MOST people a hell of a lot more than $30 to do this. Except it will be done right.
Like someone else posted... BUY CHEAP, BUY TWICE. Or you could say..BUY CHEAP, SPEND ETERNITY FIXING JY PARTS/HACKS. Like broken turbo-bolts.
Nuff said.

I'm talking crank hp not whp. So it would be about 15 to 20whp give or take. I have no dyno sheets to prove this. I don't need any to prove myself, no pun intended. Just call up one of the vendors such as FP and ask. Hell... Brian at FP run a 13.0 @ 115 with the Big28 in his GST. He had a 1g tb, 1g intake manifold, and a 1g head. Although he did have HKS 264/264 cams as well, as with the basic supporting mods, but all that extra topend power didn't just come from the cams alone. And to be honest, if it didn't atleast make that kind of power it wouldn't even be worth doing it at all IMHO. All the trouble of swapping out a 1g tb, intake manifold, and swapping the head out for just a measely 5 to 10 crank hp, I don't think so. It's all about flow.

There are alot of people who knock on the 14b swap and say that it is a waste of time and money which could be better spent on a larger turbo upgrade. I disagree. Big 10zillion trim turbo's should be the last upgrade. If you can fully build a motor, gain plenty of time properly tuning it, have all the "supporting mods" and only be running the 14b turbo, when the time comes for the proverbial you to upgrade to that "big horsepower" turbo, you will be able to get more power out of it than Joe Schmoe who dumped all his money for a big turbo upgrade first. My point is that you should concentrate on knowing ---your--- car and understanding what makes power. Tuning, not turbo's or NOS or naked women on a decal laden rice rocket. Tune the hell out of your car, put on all those mods, but hold on the big turbo until you know that you are ready and able to extract maximum power from it. Thats my philosophy and I'm sticking to it. ( No animals or sheetrock were injured in the creation of this opinion. Readers are entitled to their own opinions. The author is poor and plans on doind as many cheap and cost effective mods to his car until the money tree blooms. Copyright Groomz, 2003. )

I've posted on the 14b plenty of times so I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

14b cost me $90 came off a buddies 1g when he put on his 16g, had 80k miles on it at the time.

Went to the junkyard bought rubber piping off wrecked 99gsx for $2.00. Oil return off a 90gst for $15.00. Piece of steel exhaust piping to replace resonater free at muffler shop (garbage).

Ported out the 14b slapped it on with ABS intake and MBC @ 15psi, the car scared me the first time I flored it while turning through an intersection, holy fuking top end! Something you can't get from a t25. Full boost at 3100RPMs with the stock exhaust and rubber IC pipes. Can't wait until I get in my walbro and 3inch turbo back.
