I'm goign back and forth on deciding wheter to continue on building cars for the 1/4 mile or if I want to get into raod racing. I posted a forum on here a while back about what car to get (M3, NSX or Supra) and now I'm thinking of getting a 95 or later Type-R Integra and building it out in a SCCA GT-2 car. I went to track on Friday with my father to test his new race car and fell in love with road racing. There are no SMOG laws, worrying about it being your daily driver, no cops, just pure racing and everyone is there just for that and they are trained drivers. I still love the import scene and the ocassioanl red light race but my point is, if I'm going to spend a lot on a car, why not buy a race car and have keep the DSM as my daily driver.....

Looking to see if anyone currently races in SCCA competitions and what the overall opinions are of road racing......

Thanks!

No, it's "w0rd" and "tRu" But as for which to go for, why not a lil' of column A and a lil' of column B? Get a decent suspension set up, the basic bolt-ons and electronic neccessities, and hit the track (or road course) and see which one feels more rewarding. I loved to take my Talon to the track and to the street races, but I also loved finding empty country roads and just driving for the sake of driving. I must have driven every piece of country road around the DC Area from PG County up to Pennsylvania. When you get past Frederick you see some real awesome empty roads (for all you Maryland DSMers)

ok but i think if your looking for fun go with road racing if your looking for glory and rice envy(and you got money) then drag race.

I'd go for road racing in a heartbeat, but the cose of entry is a bit more expensive than drag racing. That's probably why more people drag race than road race.

I'd much rather take a drive on an open road course than run down the drag strip. Don't get me wrong, an occasional drag race is fun, but it gets boring pretty quick, especially after you've experienced a road course. Any car I put money into will be geared more toward road courses and scenic driving, as opposed to straight line speed.

i prefer drag..... although i havto honestly say i never tried an official "roadcourse". i dunno, its just traditional i guess, LOL. i guess its the old imature "my cars faster then yours"' thing. ill make a pt to try out a road course this summer and see if that changes things.:thumb:

thanks for the replies.......I didn't even get to drive but seeing my dad fly by me at 110 and take the big swinging left into turn 1 was really cool.......his Merlyn isn't even that fast compared to the GT and GT1 cars that were hitting 140-150mph on the front stretch.... Just like Chris said, the 1/4 mile you have 10+ seconds of addrenaline while on the course.....its constant and the terrain is always changing.....

After my wedding I have got the green light to get "a new toy". The new toy was going to be the M3 but now I'm think I'm leaning the other way. I would love to have a built race car for the track only and I would also be able to share more of my racing with my father and family. (Can't really bring mom and dad out to the Saturday night drags ;well maybe dad)

So, a new question - is the type-R the right choice? I have about $50k to play with and this would need to be car, trailer, parts, etc.....

after reading about all of the accidents this past week........im going to road racing......i have a helmet, roll cage, not much to crash into.....its dangerous enough out there without us trying to set new land speed records down Main st.......thanks again for the replies

I'm thinking you may need more money than that for spare parts and preparation of the car. That would be a good car to work with but maybe a little expensive up front for your budget. If you want to make your money stretch longer, you might want to consider a less expensive car. Grassroots Motorsports mag has many articles about this topic. Have you considered the SCCA Miata circuit? I know it's not the most masculine car, but you can save some money and the field would always consist of the same type of cars - which will really test your tuning and driving skills. It's pretty damn popular these days. Just a suggestion.

I was thinking about pssibly starting out with a Miata and moving up. Here is a pic from this past Friday at Thunderhill with 3 of them in the background

As someone who's been a memeber of SCCA their whole life, I say this: Buy your first race car used. Many, many, MANY a project has been abandonded due to lack of funds, etc, etc. You can get a full IT car, trailor, spares, tires, rims, etc etc for way less than 10k if you look. No, it's not going to be the fastest car on the track, but you're not the fastest driver on the track either.

Go get an IT car, like an old Datsun 240/260, or perhaps a 2G RX-7 (Both are reliable, have lots of parts, and are better than "flying FWD box"-VW's that litter the regional races), get your lisence, and go get lots of track time, lots of experience, and general whatever.

I'd reccomend google, Sports Car (SCCA's official Magazine), or the local SCCA regional magazines with classifieds in them.

My father does the one for New England Region. :)

i'm a little confused on this... when we're talking road racing, is this something where there is a designated course of city streets and non-urban streets sectioned off?
