hey guys i was going to school this morning and i noticed that both my speedometer and odometer was not working (was at 0 mp/h), but the rmp is fine tho. i was wondering if anyone knew what to check for, for this problem and where to check for it, and can i fix it myself? i dont know alot about cars so please help...! ohh and i have a 2g 98 gs n/t

Ok so this might be a little shady but i did the same thing but kinda on purpose.

There is a sensor on the back of the tranny by the rear tranny mount that is the speedometer. I had the pig tail on the sensor were broken off and the sensor would work its way out of the tranny after enough time. so check that sensor first to see if its plugged in. Look directly down infront of the windsheild washer resevoir, By the back of the tranny.

The sensor he is referring to is known as the VSS or the Vehicle Speed Sensor. That is definitely a possibility, however it could be your cluster as well. Search around for VSS if you need more info

In the following link Defiant explains how to test the VSS, however it is for a turbo model so I am not sure if it works the same.

Here is a helpful link for you though: http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189207&highlight=vehicle+speed+sensor

While it's a possibility, I doubt it's the cluster. The VSS is probably the culprit.

First, like Nate said, make sure it's connected (I don't see why it wouldn't be... but still). Then, follow the link above, in which Defiant explains how to test it. Even though it's for a 4G63, the principle is the same.

This happend to me and the wires for the vss had melted to one of the metal lines by the throttle body causing it to groud. All that I needed to do was retape the wires so they weren't grounding and I was ok.

Didn't read the article (done it numerous times). I would like to mention, and even just to reiterate, in case someone doesn't read the article or should the article not mention this, but do not ham fist the sensor when removing it. If you break that little, plastic gear off in the trans, guess what you get to do next...

Remove the trans and get it out of there.

hey thankz for the help guys.. i had no idea the "vvs" was on the tranny well im going to check it out today, but i was also wondering if my tranny could have somthing to do with the vvs problems, because i had just resently replaced the tranny for my car it has less then a 1000 miles but its been leaking fluid for the past month. whenever i come to a stop after driving there is leaking fluid from tranny???

VSS (two "S"'s) Vehicle Speed Sensor

if you still have your old tranny and it was known to have a good VSS, use that one. (unless you blew the diff up, then who knows)

it is important that you find that leak.

1. find leak. if you cannot see where it is coming from, get a can of engine degreaser and clean the tranny, top and bottom and side, then the source will be more obvious.

2. fix leak.

If the sensor was inadvertantly damaged or broken when replacing the tranny; then yeah, it is possible this is a result of the tranny rebuild.

If it's between the bellhousing and block, then this could be a gasket problem by your oil port. My leak looks like it is coming from the tranny when it's really not...

Any leak is not good.
You should have that tranny leak checked out, ESPECIALLY if it was just rebuilt...

If someone that didn't know what they where doing installed your tranny then it is a possibility that they messed up the rear main seal. Its a good idea to replace this thing if you are already down there. This will cause the car to leak like the EXXON Valdez and is easily diagnosed because the motor oil will drip down along the drive plate and end up on that black longitudinal motor support member. This obviously will be motor oil not tranny oil.

Also check the CV joint seals, these should have been replaced with new ones. If not then it is highly probable the they will leak.

As far as the speedo goes, I had this problem too. The sensor that that the above people are telling you to check is most likely the culprit. In my tranny, the plastic ring gear that is mounted on the differential decided to come out of its place and get chewed up by the rest of the gears. This large white plastic crown gear drives the smaller pinion gear on the shaft of the VSS sensor so no speedo signal is an obvious result. I had to pull my tranny, take it apart, replace this gear (12 bux from SATAN), and seal it back up with ANEROBIC SEALANT (for the love of god don't use RTV). This fixed all my tranny and leak issues for good.:thumb:

If you own a DSM then youre gonna have to become a mechanic sorry. I sugest you get yourself a chiltons and some tools. Or go to a buddie's house that has tools and get'er done over the weekend. Youll learn alot and save a crapp load of money.
