    Shootout 2024 scramble

Got some time in the garage today and got the trans mounted back in. Also ran the main tucked wire harness and got everything finalized besides the trans connections. Next will be mounting the xfer case and rear diff!!For anyone wondering. This turned out to be waaay easier than mounting the...

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Heck yeah man. Bought my racer tickets and everything so officially entered into shootout as a racer for the first time. Pumped about it too!!
  3. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Finally got the trans back and it was even more built than I had originally though. Figured while I was at it though might at well throw a 300m shaft and upgraded front lsd. Now it’s as built as it could be internals wise before going dog box. Waiting on dss axles which are being built now and...

    Shootout 2024 scramble

So its neither. I actually originally sent it to Tim because I was afraid it did have a welded center diff, which is opposite of my build plans. When he got it opened up it turns out the center diff is a super old school Kaaz center diff that is a clutch type. Apparently it is super rare even...

    Shootout 2024 scramble

So major update on the build, some very good, some very bad haha. I will start with the bad, or just pain in the ass I guess..Had to pull the motor again to fix a scratch we made hanging the engine. Way easier to pull second time around and got the scratch sanded/prepped for paint.Also...

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Turns out it was AMAZING news. It truly is a built trans and even has the ultra rare Kaaz center clutch type diff. Evo3 rails and gears and tons of other goodies. I did go ahead and get a Quaife front diff installed as well as the boosting 300m output shaft too. So now I should have full lock up...

Welcome back sir!!! Congrats on the new project and let me know if you need anything/help.

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Just the man I had questions for then lol.. check your PMs.Turns out this trans is not the one he sold to Rob. Different ratio.. was hoping to get more info on it but it is not his. @twicks69 is going to go through this one and get me all sorted out though.

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Made more progress with the engine bay harness. Takes a lot of work to get everything to correct length and location. Put it in the car, measure one thing, take it out… alter, put it in the car… rinse and repeat. But almost done and can loom everything maybe next week. Added the Hobbs switch and...
  10. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

It’s actually surprisingly easy to do. Now I say that since a lot of my engine bay is wide open but to me the hardest part would be getting the starter off/disconnected and then the freaking axle on the passenger side gave me so much grief coming out.Pro tip lol: tape a rag or towel to the...
  11. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Oh trust me, I didn’t want to pull it lol. Long story I am going to post soon but had a mix up with the xfer case and diff being built by Tim Zimmer and now have to ship the trans to him too.
  12. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

So this had to happen over last week.. out with the newly mounted trans. So happy about it lol..Did get the driver side fuel finished up and closed. Almost done with the passenger side..

    Shootout 2024 scramble

How much for the whole table?!! Haha, but seriously.
  14. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Hoping he makes it to shootout this year as well.
  15. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Soooo true. It goes freaking EVERYWHERE. Even with the plastic up and everything, it still ended up in the cabin somehow hahaha. Glad it is the last of the sealer I have to deal with. every 10mins of grinding it off, is 30mins of cleaning.Hahahaha well, still time for all that to happen...
  16. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Sucked it up and finally stripped all the oem seam sealer in the rear. I have been avoiding this and honestly, I’m glad it’s over lol. Now for new sealer and then paint soon.
  17. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Hope to see you at shootout this year. Missed you at the last one.
  18. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Yeah man, feel so lucky to have found it. Especially when parts are sooo hard to find now, especially with AWD manuals.

Don't need ac if you don't drive it in the rain... lol.
  20. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Well, she finally has a heart! Got everything hung this past Sunday and went without anything crazy happening. Going to get the fuel system finished up in my weekend and then hopefully start wiring next!
  21. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Hey knows of the build lol. Wouldn’t have been possible without his extensive knowledge and parts at time.
  22. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Yes sir! That is who it was that found it. Dude is a freaking saint and pillar for the dsm community and good friend.
  23. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Honestly, just sheer luck and happened to know the right person and the right time that found it. Gave me a call and of course I said whatever it takes I will buy it haha. Feel kind of bad actually installing it since it's such a rare find, but things must move forward lol.
  24. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Well, finally getting around to installing the engine and trans. Scooped up a 0mile shep built trans from back in the day that has sat on a shelf in the original bag for years and years. Got everything mounted on it and ready to get everything hung hopefully Sunday. More to come..

    Shootout 2024 scramble

If it’s Gabe Ortega, then those are the videos I used for this mod as well. He’s pretty detailed with everything, I just have a VERY hard time listening to him say “More or Less” and “Pretty much” every other sentence lol. Especially when he would say it for measurements and details that need to...
  26. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Finally finished the Prius electric power steering mod for the 2g dsm and have to say, the lower part is the hardest part for sure. The little mini u-joints to connect the dsm yolk to the Prius section is a HUGE pain in the ass. But it’s done and one more huge thing checked off the list. If...
  27. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Heck yeah dude!! Looks good and keep up the hard work man. It pays off.
  28. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Small update, motor top end is coming together.
  29. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Yes, you have to connect it to a manual or de-powered rack to make this work. What some do is loop the lines and there are how to's out there on how to do both options. I chose to go with a completely de-powered rack and I believe FIBA motorsports is currently running a group buy on them. Check...
  30. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Yes sir! The upper section is all the mitsu stuff and the lower is the Prius section.
  31. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Here is the final upper section completed. I still have to mod the steering output to the rack side and honestly kind of avoiding it lol. I don’t like messing with the caps for the joints.Steering shafts welded and then coat of primer put over it. I took some sheet metal I had here to weld...
  32. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

I honestly have no idea at all. The thing with the conversion is that you have to hybridize the Tesla motor/shaft with the mitsu upper. So as long as you can get the lower motor modded so the lower mount bracket can go onto it, the upper should be very similar to how the 2G upper gets modded...
  33. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Oh absolutely.. he knowns how anal I am about everything and how I spent 30mins with rulers and levels to make sure it was spot on LOL… so yeah. He also knows just mentioning it freaked me out and made me go look at it again. So he wins this one.. hahaha.
  34. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Finally got around to getting the hood pins finalized. Tried to use the quik-latch but ultimately it would not work. Switched to the aero-catch and although the footprint of the latch is larger, it’s waaaaay more secure and that’s really the goal. Here is the final set..More to...

    99 GSX Rebirth/Clean-Up/Build

Part out!! I shotgun call the drip rails!!
  36. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Now that the engine is wrapped up as far as timing and degrees I am waiting on a clutch and then I can hopefully hang the engine/trans in the bay in two weeks. BUT, also working on the steering and almost finished with the hardest part of it, and hopefully welding the shafts tonight after work...
  37. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Sorry everyone I missed the back and forth on the AEM cam gear markings!! To sum it up, the first set was not correct whether it’s for an Evo or a DSM. Got a new set and everything is perfect. When timed everything is as it should be. The etched marks are horizontal with the head, lined up...
  38. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

It is very easy to miss but they are indeed different.I just kept having trouble timing everything and then a member pointed out the gear issue and the new gears worked perfect.
  39. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

So if you look at the first photo posted, the cam gear timing marks are off.. they do not line up correct even though the engine is timed correct. After fighting it for a while and hearing different things back and forth, ordered another set and they were perfect. I have no idea how they are...
  40. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Been taking some time to get the engine dialed in and finally think I am almost ready to finalize it. Checked valve clearance and cam degrees to set the lobe seperation exactly where I wanted it. Took some time and found out I had a bum set of AEM cam gears, but it’s all finished and waiting on...
  41. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

My moto is powder coat the world lol! If it can be, I prefer to powder coat things. To me it provides more protection and longer lasting finish.
  42. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Brakes are finally finished.. took a LOT of modding the oem knuckles and I would definitely not do the same approach next time lol. If you are reading this and thinking of doing an Evo 8/9 brembo swap on your front, buy the Galant knuckles that makes it a direct bolt on. I do NOT recommend what...
  43. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Heck yeah man.. keep at it. Btw, I tried to call you AND texted you while at shootout. Never heard back from you though! Drove up and spent half a day with Raf as well. Hope to meet up with you next year. Should have the GSX and the Evo done by then.
  44. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Motor is going together well and also finished the rear section. Going to start running the custom harnesses now as well. Sooooo much to do still and so little time until next September!
  45. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Mounted sunroof and after painting the rear section the headliner goes in next. Slooooowly getting there haha.Engine build stuff coming soon
  46. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Ohhh, the inspection cover... yeah that gasket is actually discontinued, so I ONLY used the oem sealant listed to use. Just used more than usual and made sure to get it all the way to the edge.
  47. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

So for the tail housing section, I used the oem sealant recommended in the rebuild manual. The center and forward housings actually go together with no sealant OR gasket. There is a shim used for setting the contact pattern and back lash but that is it. Where are you trying to place a gasket and...
  48. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Thank you dude, and yeah that’s exactly right. Most people never get a chance to see the cars stripped down this far so trying to be as detailed and critical as I can. Just hoping to help others if they are thinking of doing the same thing or are stumped where things are/go. More to come soon.
  49. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Balanced all the short block parts and got everything final torqued. Friendly reminder to always check the torque with a stretch gauge! Mine were very different than the recommended starting torque form ARP.Here are the final numbers and you can see how far off some are for stretch.
  50. Dusty Landrum

    Shootout 2024 scramble

Big update, fixed my moment of stupidity when installing the upper control arm. Turned into a shit show trying to blend it and get everything perfect again, but got it knocked out! Also, more to come as I am getting the engine together finally too.
