Yea, that is pretty high! A tough place to be compared to flat land people. But it cracks me that I was accused of “gutting” my car. It was 2650lbs (without me) or 2850lbs race wight and didn’t have a single thing cut on the sheet metal.
WOW, canceling autox is a big blow! That takes me out of bringing my Spyder, but I could still bring my Summit next year. But English racing had to come from the west coast, that is one LONG trip! That news doesn't surprise me ;)
I drove a modified DSM to most of my 25 Shootouts (11-12 hours each way). Many were we done in mid 11 second DSM, which was considered very fast in the late 90's/early 00's ;). And they were even more likely to break! So it can be done! One of the problems is motivation, back those days...
I have only missed one Shootout since 1996 (despite the fact that it was moved to mid August, my weeding anniversary). And unfortunately I will have to miss this year, my 18 year old son is starting college in Florida that week. But I will back the next year!People complaining about The...
This was my 20th Shootout, in the last 21 years (yes, I missed one :( ). My Summit wasn't ready, so I brought my Talon Spyder, I knew it wasn't going to be competitive at the drag strip, so I decided to focus on Autox. However when I saw the course, I really regretted not making more power...
Funny, when I post stuff about the van here, no one pays attention :).Summit has been a blast to race! That is a third video of my van that went somewhat viral :)
Nate,What you are talking about is plane, dumb luck! Dealing with "parted out" components, you never know what you are going to need! You can go through 10 trannies and not find a good one. Where as, your next ONE could be IT!What is nice about racing 14b cars is that you do not...
And I still say that you would have been faster with a 5sp!Automatics eat up some power, but do give you some advantages. Unfortunately, 14b does not give any power to spare! ;)
There will always be 200-250lbs weight penalty for AWD. Overcoming this penalty with 350hp is virtually impossible! You guys made me see that! ;)However, once you get over 1000hp, that weight penalty becomes insignificant and AWD cars will be faster (given equally well prepared cars)...
It is funny how FWD's are holding on to the top two spots :). I guess it makes sense, with all of us being under 350hp, weight becomes a worse enemy than poor(er) traction. But this is very much with-in the "spirit of the 14b racing": doing something different, proving that status quo isnt...
There are always people who are looking for an excuse to invalidate a record. To me, run what you want, but disclose what you have and let people make up their own minds! When I ran 11.6, people were calling my car "too light" (~2650lbs + 200lbs driver) and "too modified" (basic Stage 2...
Please define "built motor"... Most of our motors are still making around 8.5 to 1 CR and use heavier rods/pistons, which only makes them slower...Most people build motors to have a "fresh motor, which could hangle over 600hp" and NOT because they are trying to make more power. What is...
I have come to a realization that a fast van is enough of an oddity and I really not need to handicap myself even farther by running a 14b. So I swapped in a 16g. So far, my best pass was 12.08 @113 on pump
gas.One extra bonus, I had a serious fitment issue with my 14b/16g j-pipe. Like...

OK, guys, what is going on here (or should I say, NOT going on ;))? We had more activity in this thread in off season, than we have now, that season has started!I made some test and tune passes at our Import even, no clean passes, but I learned a few valuable lessons:- 5 gallons of...
So, today I took a long lunch and went to Granite State Dyno in Kingston NH.The van pulled 265hp off the street
Then 292hp with open exhaust
Lastly 303hp changing pump gas with 110 octane race fuelI probably could have gotten another 10 hp from more tuning, but I had to get...
The stiffest I ever used on my car was around 600 lbs/in (I never damaged camber plates), but I have tried Fedja's 1000 lbs/in Springs with Penske shocks and they felt softer! It is all about dampers! :)Did you also change your dampers when you went to softer springs?
Springs do not really cause "hard ride" (dampers do), especially when it come to "weight reduction" amount of weight change. What spring rate springs did you have and what reate are you looking to use?
By the time I entered national DSM scene, late 95/early 96, they were already running 20G's. So this must have been much earlier. But I suppose, most people modding/racing their DSMs in 90/91 were setting 14b records :)
What kind of engine do you think you need to set 14b record? :) In theory, 10 or 11 to 1 should be best, in reality, most people do it on a very reasonable compression (8-9 to 1). Much it comes down to weight, a true street car might have a hard time touching the record because of weight, but...
The only value that I question in this spec is the hot idle pressure. Has anyone ever seen over 10 psi in the head during HOT stock idle? I haven't... So if this the case, Mitsu OEM was designed outside of their own specs? That doesn't seem to be likely.
I haven't run coolant lines on my "converntional bearing turbos" since the late 90's. That includes all 14b and 16g turbos. However, I do not put more than 5-6k miles/year on my own cars.If I was driving over 15k/year, I probably would have reconnected the water lines. And I always...
I never had a problem with feeding 14b/16g turbos from the stock location (from the head). That is despite the fact that oil pressure the that location drops down under 3psi at hot idle! That is too low for most 100psi gauges to register, so they just read ZERO!Yet, apprently, that is enough...
As a "man of science", I do not value testimonies based on "feel". I need well collected, experimental data! Show me something conclusive and I will gladly chance my opinion!
Guys, you know I am not a huge fan of a 2.3/2.4 engines in the first place, given a big turbo they should be making more power than 2.0 engines, but they just don't...However, on 14b, you will hit those 32lbs at lower RPMs and that will kill your power! It actually makes sense that it...
Sounds about right for an automatic tranny, which is heavier. But the amount of gas in tank is also important. At ~7lbs per gallon, the difference between 3-5 gallons (min required to run stock tank) and a full tank is about 80lbs!
Guys, please keep the dyno discussion out this thread! Just state what dyno you used and leave it at that! This thread is big enough and doesn't need another controversial sub-topic ;).Quck update on my 14b Summit Wagon: I got some 16" Volk TE37 wheels and that made me want to watch the...
