  1. 2G Diagnosing the diagnostic port

Has anyone ever disassembled a Mitsubishi OBD-II port ? Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LlyxpCPbNQ ?In mine, it looks like things are held in place by a white piece of plastic fitting into a black piece that has the actual female terminal pins.
  2. Spyder P0302 and fuel injectors

Right, I was referring to the injector insulator. Thanks. The injectors are basically the same across the two part #s, or at least they are supposed to be. The appearance and colors of the exterior are a little different. I don't recall having as much trouble as I did with the seating of the...
  3. Spyder P0302 and fuel injectors

No CEL !!!! Apparently P0302 is a code that goes away after 3 drive cycles without P0302 symptoms. Now a decision to make on what do with these injectors. They may make a great set of injectors for someone for DD use by replacing the lower o-rings.
  4. Spyder P0302 and fuel injectors

I recently did a fuel injectors replacement and ended up with a P0302 (cylinder #2 misfire) with all kinds of driving symptoms associated with single cylinder misfire (and possibly running on 3 cylinders).Well today I went back to my old injectors and found the problem: A cracked O-ring...
  5. 2G DOT-3 as clutch fluid?

I've been recently experiencing some strange clutch shifting symptoms, that I concluded was mainly about old/ exhausted clutch fluid. It's been the same fluid in there for 5+ years. Today I took out what was in the reservoir and replaced it with some SMB DOT-3 that I had around, which is...
  6. 2G 95 TSI started tapping/knocking

Did you have a look at the white marks left by whoever worked on the TB last time? Your timing belt has skipped a tooth.
  7. 2G 95 TSI started tapping/knocking

I could come by and make a visit to your dsm, and discuss possible options. Left you a PM.
  8. 2G Front roll stopper mount bracket (part #/ torque ?)

Thanks for the responses and info. @Mello those look like min and max numbers. Correction I see it's ft-lbs and Nm. Thanks again.
  9. 2G Front roll stopper mount bracket (part #/ torque ?)

Today I replaced my front engine roll stopper mount (rubber was broken and falling apart). To get all the holes to line up correctly, I temporarily loosened the 17mm bolts that attach the roll stop mount support bracket to the transmission. Does anyone know the name of this part (or part #)...
  10. 2G Engine won’t crank

You could also take the starter out of the vehicle and (bench) test it to make sure it's working correctly. There's lots of YT videos on it.
  11. 2G Alignments and eccentric toe bolt

When I look at the diagrams from the FSM, it looks like there is only one mating mark at the bottom, so the expected position would leave all those notches on the right side and closer to the bottom than the top (hope that makes sense). But it may just be at one end of the adjustable range...
  12. 2G Alignments and eccentric toe bolt

So after chewing through rear tires for about 5 years, I have now started to do my own alignments. I'm using two methods, the toe plate method and a laser level method I found on YouTube. I might also do a string alignment sometime. Both the front and the rear are now within specs (0.06 inch...
  13. 2G 4g64 Swap, Model years?

There's probably someone on this forum who knows more, and there are some threads out there on this subject. Here's one . You need to think about how the block hooks up to the transmission, and also how the head hooks up to the intake etc, since the 4g64 in the 3g is in the opposite...
  14. 2G M/T - tire size difference ?

I assume you mean premature wear on the differential components in the transmission? If so I'm wondering how bad the stress on it would be, or if it's ok to leave it like that for a few months. I've always had minor noise symptoms going into 1st and 2nd gear and it's gotten a little worse in...
  15. 2G M/T - tire size difference ?

What are the consequences of running different tire sizes on an M/T vehicle? What I have is an F5M31 (4G64), and currently there is a 205/55/16 on the front driver side wheel and a 205/60/16 on the front passenger side wheel. It's quite a large difference according to the tire size calculator...
  16. 2G Not passing smog because of monitors

I had a look at the DSM profile for the GSX yesterday and it says "AEM Wideband". So your O2 sensor setup is already totally different from the stock ECU and O2 sensors. Whatever I said in an earlier post is for the stock setup and I wouldn't know how to begin to guess on your O2 sensors ECU...
  17. 2G Not passing smog because of monitors

In CA all pre-2000 cars have to go through the tailpipe emissions test. A 2G though can have one I/M monitor not ready. My Spyder passed in December on the tailpipe emissions test and one I/M monitor (EGR SYS) at "not ready". A 2000 and newer car can pass only on OBD2, but has to have all...
  18. 2G Not passing smog because of monitors

Is your diagnostic port OBD-I or OBD-II? If you have a 1995 ECU, then it's probably looking for an OBD-I and not OBD-II emissions system. Also was the car originally manufactured as a CA vehicle, or a Federal emissions car later brought into CA? I think something must have been modified or...
  19. Problem 2g 4g64 99

It's hard to get the real details from your description of the problem. But I don't think it's the alarm system. There is a relay you can take out to disable the alarm system and see if the problem is still there.Did you check: - Fuel pump relay - MFI relay - Power transistor unit ?Also...
  20. 2G G4JS head in 2G?

Has anyone successfully installed a Huyndai G4JS head into a 1g or 2g, on a 4G63/64 block ? I see it's been done in the Evo and in 3Gs, but it seems like there could be other complications for a 2G. I find one or two threads on dsmtuners related to this, but no real details for doing this in a 2G.
  21. 2G Recommended timing components

Yes I fixed the profile yesterday, but my posts were still coming through with the "GSX" signature in this thread. As I recall there was no "Spyder GS" selection when I first set up the profile.Your info though on adjustable camshaft and 154-tooth belt for the 4G63/64 hybrid is generally...
  22. 2G Recommended timing components

?I think you're referring to something else, like maybe a 4g64->63 head conversion, which is a different subject. My engine is SOHC 2.4l and the only belts for these engines are 123 or 124 tooth belts.Anyways I've gone ahead and picked up a Gates 124 tooth belt. I should have it in a...
  23. 2G Recommended timing components

Well I know it's been done before with another Mitsubishi engine and belt with no problems. Basically it's one tooth shorter and it would tension differently, and I would know if the timing is right when I do the two crankshaft rotations and see if the pin goes into the tensioner hole. The 2G...
  24. 2G Recommended timing components

This isn't directly related to the OP's specific post, but: What would happen if I used a belt with 123 teeth instead of 124 in my 2G 4G64 Spyder? I'm in the middle of a WP/Timing Belt job and I'm looking at a Bando TB with 123 teeth (99 Galant or 3G Spyders). Right now I'm leaning toward not...
  25. General Too much compression?

Between the FSM and alldatadiy.com, I can pretty much find all the diagnostic tests (recommended by Mitsubishi).. though these documents were written 20 yrs ago and experienced dsmers have some different ways of doing things. Like most people I don't have access to all the specialty tools that...
  26. General Too much compression?

I took the head off twice when I did the engine work, now 3yrs ago, and some components I reused from the 1st time, and these well seals were one of them. I don't recall what gasket sealant I used. I'm pretty sure this is the problem, and I'll find some permatex #2. Thanks for that.Well I...
  27. General Too much compression?

I replaced the PCV valve about 1+ yr ago. I haven't checked it out recently. There's no catch can setup. It passed CA emissions in January which I don't think can happen with excessive blow-by.
  28. General Too much compression?

As part of tracking down a recent cooling systems problem that cropped up, I did an engine compression test to check the HG. The numbers came out similar to what I got last time: 200-210psi. It’s possible that I need a new compression tester, but how much is excessive cylinder compression a...
  29. 2G Odd Compression Result

I think there's a chance that a Seafoaming could help you out, for a little while anyways. Also you might find out something from looking around the cyl #3 area underneath the valve cover. Looks like another member already suggested this in this thread. I don't see how a piston issue could...
  30. 2G Odd Compression Result

Yes I realized this after thinking about Engine Fundamentals 101. There's no way for air to leak out through an injector seal, which would be a fuel and not an air issue. The OP brought it up. There are seals in the intake/ exhaust valves which are probably old.The value in LONGFT1(%)...
  31. 2G Odd Compression Result

Looks like you have fuel trim in your scanner: LONGFT1(%) +5.4. Your engine is running a bit lean, but within limits. Not enough to suggest a lot of fuel dumping by the ECU. If you're interested you could watch it in relation to ECT (210 degrees) and see what it does at idle.I would...
  32. 2G Odd Compression Result

One thing I'd be curious about is what the compression numbers look like with the engine cold. You may have a tiny crack or HG leak that seals up when the engine is warmed up. And that's how these things start. I think I drove my 1G about 10K miles with a leaking HG before it finally blew...
  33. 2G Weird problem, car doesn't want to move as if driveline or brakes binding

Well did you figure this out? I was thinking of replacing my brake booster but it's a lot of work and I haven't noticed any brake booster symptoms recently.According to my diagnostics info which is from the FSM, there is supposed to be a check valve in the vacuum hose right where it attaches...
  34. 2G Higher Temp

OK so this is a dsm you picked up a month ago. Do you know if the ECU and fans are stock? There might be something in this old thread on another forum that's helpful to you. Also I'm sure you've thought of this so I hesitate to bring it up but .... condition of HG ? It's a stretch from what...
  35. 2G Higher Temp

Trapped air or other cooling system blockage? Do the temps go up only when you're stopped and then go down when you're moving again? If you're only seeing rising temps when you're stopped then that's what would do it. 3/4 though is a long ways for the needle to travel. Just another thing to...
  36. 2G What is this (suspension welding) ?

I went to, recently, an introductory welding class, and I understand that this is basically a sloppy MIG welding job. Also I found a great educational resource for steering and suspension, it has stuff both for the classroom and for the shop. I think I now have a reasonable idea of all the...
  37. 2G Engine mount and stoppers

Time for a newbie question: I replaced the front left engine mount in my Spyder GS a couple of days ago. I didn't have new stoppers and installed the mount without them. I've taken now the old stoppers, cut a slit into them and slid them over the main mount bolt area (picture attached). I...
  38. 2G Weird problem, car doesn't want to move as if driveline or brakes binding

I agree, multiple problems. Did you check your brake booster system? I think the FSM describes some diagnostic tests on the brake pedal with engine on/engine off, etc.
  39. 2G Mismatched tires.

I'm no sort of authority on tires, but the bottom line is that you're putting stress on the entire structural and suspension systems. But I can't imagine how 40mph for 5-6 miles in your scenario would make much of a difference. Try and imagine the stress that would go into a car by someone...
  40. 2G What is this (suspension welding) ?

OK well there's nothing like this on the driver's side and Socal is not a part of the country where these cars pick up a lot of rust. I'll think about it.
  41. 2G What is this (suspension welding) ?

This is something I discovered recently in my vehicle, after 2+ years of driving it. I think somehow some piece of metal that was covering it up broke off and now exposes what was underneath it. I guess at some point in the vehicle's history there was a collision in the FR wheel area and...
  42. 2G brake line/fitting leak

This was about the fitting going into the brake hose, which needed to be tightened. I believe I took care of the last little drip today. It's hard not to overtighten (FSM says 11 ft-lbs).
  43. 2G brake line/fitting leak

I checked into Russel, I might do that sometime but I'm not sure about the value for street driving. I didn't have the right part #, it's actually MB857825, a lot harder to find but it is out there. Here's what I did: I picked up this product Poly-Armour PVF steel brake line PAJ-312, at a...
  44. 2G brake line/fitting leak

No the wheel cylinder is a part of the drum brake hardware. It has pistons which push out the shoes when the brakes are applied. A photo of the good one on the passenger side is attached. Also the best shot I have on the leak, which is on the other side of the driver's side drum brake. I...
  45. 2G brake line/fitting leak

This might be a semi-newbie question, but I'll post here: I was replacing the wheel cylinder in the driver's side rear wheel brakes a few days ago, which I still have as the drum brake setup. After putting it all back together, it's leaking from the fitting where the metal brake pipe goes into...
  46. 1G Data logging

It looks to me like you might still have to get a hold of an OBDI connector and do some wire splicing by color codes. This thread should be helpful: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/need-the-wiring-of-obd1-plug.348904/I'm not sure what laptop software will read/translate these signals so you...
  47. General Intermittent exhaust leak

I found the soapy water spray method on some YouTube videos and it's on many online forums including this post on dsmtuners . I think most of the video I shot shows boiling water, but the bubbles at 1:27 and 1:47 look to me like gases coming up from the manifold or gasket. But OK, I guess it...
  48. General Intermittent exhaust leak

A little update: I picked up an infrared thermometer off Ebay ($7.50 !) and have been using it to check out different parts of the manifold and exhaust and cats. It looks like the temp varies wildly at different places where the manifold meets the head, some places 500F+, other places about...
  49. General Intermittent exhaust leak

I described in another thread how I have this intermittent exhaust leak that I can smell. A Seafoam treatment came up with nothing, so I've been looking around for other ways to find it. Now I actually took off the head 2X when working on the engine in 2013-14, and when I put it back together...
  50. Data Logging on Android device

I don't have one, at this time .... but there is an Android app Torque for OBDII, and also a MUT plugin for the pro version. You'll probably need an OBD1/2 adapter.
