Dye is great! That's how I discovered a cracked transmission case once... Also, it does really help to start with a clean trans/engine before doing such a test.
^tunedbysaturnsl basically covered it. I also replaced the master and booster with 3G parts (over a year ago) and the booster BARELY fits. I had to pass it under the intake manifold from the battery side of the engine bay with some amount of cussing to get it over to the drivers side. Also...
Just to confirm, this is a 4g63 platform and not a 420a you're working on correct? I ask because I have a 99 GS in addition to my GSX, and the 420a blocks have a bed plate design. Upon rebuilding my 420a several years ago (broken timing belt) upon first assembly and startup in the car I had a...
So, here's a long overdue update. I finally got around to devoting some time to this again recently and have gotten the car running well (aside from a small problem called out below). I had 2 issues preventing the car from starting, an intermittent connection issue with the CAS signal wire that...
Hey guys,
I'm performing a small garage clean out. The following parts are just what I have put into a list at this time.
If there are other items you need feel free to ask if I have it, though most of what I have are used OEM parts. Prices don't include shipping, however prices can be flexible...
Are you referring to 1 belt or 2? Aren't the alternator and PS belts separate? I'm also running a 6bolt swapped 2G but my alternator is relocated to the AC compressor location. I can vaguely remember the stock belt configuration at this point? If a belt will not tighten and there's nothing...
Thanks for posting an update Critic. I've either been out of town or sick in the last week and haven't done anything with my car since. I still have a bit to do before I'm ready to try and start the car up again. Although I'm kind of expecting the same result you got...
Awesome. Thanks for the info and screenshots twicks. I will try to compare with my settings this afternoon. Do you think phasing issues could prevent the car from synchronizing for startup? Or would it only prevent it from firing and running? In my case I've noticed that "Stat Sync'd" does not...
I see. I would turn off your injectors (if you haven't already) until you know your ECU is going to sync properly. What CAS are you running? One thought I've had all this time is that something may be different from trying to run the 2G hall effect (what I'm trying to run) versus the 1G optical...
Hey Kevin, I figured I would post a small update here so this is all documented.I did test and confirm that I'm getting 5V on the CAS signal wire when the sensor is unplugged. I expected this to be the case because the car runs fine with this same signal wire on the 1G CAS setup. I also...
Hey Kevin, thanks for the reply. Yesterday evening I converted back to my previous setup (only about 10 minutes to swap the CAS and a couple plugs), it started and ran fine again. Before switching back I took a short video of a menu of crank/cam parameters, I did this again after switching to...
Hello,
I have been struggling to get my car started following the install of the revised Kiggly 12 tooth trigger disc, the car started and ran fine before.
I'm running a stock coil.
The car is a 6 bolt swapped 2G (98) running an AEM series 1. I was running a green top 1G CAS that was...
I have not necessarily seen this on a dsm, but I have seen a simple ground wire left unconnected cause wipers to run uncontrollably, grounding issues can cause many strange electrical issues. Perhaps dig around and make sure you haven't accidentally disconnected a ground wire somewhere under the...
Also ensure that your vent hose from the valve cover is unclogged/unrestricted. If your crankcase is somehow not venting, a little crankcase pressure can push out a seal in no time.Or a pcv stuck open under boost can do the same.
Just to make sure I understand, you do or do not know exactly where the leak is? Have you tried a new seal on the throttle position sensor? Also make sure you have a gasket on both sides of the throttle body (I know this probably goes without saying, the best of us forget simple things sometimes.)
Thanks for the ideas/thoughts guys. 007jimmy, if I remember right I got the kit from extremepsi. Also, I did put a bead of jbweld around the delete plug as you mentioned, I had not even read to do that anywhere before but figured it would be a good idea.I hope to have my new valve cover and...
Well I did remove the entire timing cover about a month ago and have driven it a few times like that, I have sprayed engine degreaser on that side of the engine, and blew it dry with an air hose. I have tried to keep a close eye on where the oil is coming from, I even have dye in the oil and I...
Hey Guys,I have a 6 bolt I recently built (approximately 1200 miles or so on the new build). The engine is bored 20 over (wiesco pistons on eagle rods), new front cover, eliminated balance shafts etc. I began seeing some oil on the ribbed side of the timing belt and cam gears as soon as I...
Hey guys,So I have been searching this for a little while now from many places and have not been able to find anything.I have an AEM standalone that I have just began setting up on my '98 GSX, I actually started it up and drove on the aem yesterday for the first time. I also have an AEM...
I did a boost leak test a little while back and I did find a leak at the throttle body which I have fixed, I was also having a little difficulty getting my make-shift boost leak tester to work properly either way. So perhaps I will try it again to be sure.
Hey guys,I recently rebuilt my 6 bolt (w/ 7 bolt head) with forged rods and pistons, 272 cams, oversize valves, dual coil valves springs etc. The motor is mounted on solid urethane mounts, and I am running 1 step cooler plugs. I have around 700 miles on the build. The turbo I am running is a...
I have taken one of these out many years ago, can't really remember how, but I got it back in without trouble if I remember right. To try to refresh my memory, did you have to unbolt the sunroof and take the shade out from the top?And if you could possibly post a good couple of pics of the...
Once completing the port job, I was not totally satisfied with the results. I was no longer getting a puff of smoke from the exhaust after hitting 3 or 4 lbs of boost, but I would still go over 100 psi around 5000 rpms or so. I believe I saw as much as 110 psi. So I tore down everything and...
Considering this article is still pretty recent, I figured I would post up with a before and after of porting my oil relief valve on my freshly built 6 bolt. Following the build, I would see around 105 psi upon cold start-up, and between 50 and 60 psi warmed up idling high around 2500 rpms...
A small update:I ground down the flange on 4 of the head stud nuts, they clear the springs fine now. However, the springs are still so close that getting a socket onto them once they are ran down next to the springs is a royal pain.I am in the process of trying to get the head torqued...
Believe me, I tried that, these springs are pretty stiff. And not to mention a couple of them have virtually no room to even move in the direction away from their adjacent stud. And I had no luck finding this exact discussion anywhere on the forum, although I expect it does exist somewhere on...
I am in the process of assembling a 6 bolt bottom end with a 7 bolt (2G) head. I am using the ARP headstuds (12mm for the 6 bolt). The head has been bored for the larger studs so the head drops down over the studs no problem. However, I am having some major clearance issues with the valve...
Yes I am aware of the need for another crank to build a stroker, I was just a little unsure where he was going with it. Since he is talking about balancing the original crank despite the fact that he is planning on doing a stroker soon.
I also had to figure this out recently, if it is the factory transmission then you should need the late 96-99 cables. As for specific lengths I am not sure, and I really do not believe they are interchangeable. But I know the shorter cables will not allow you to seal at the firewall with the...
With spun rod bearings there is definitely a chance that the crank will need to be shaved to clean up abrasions on the journals, and in turn you would have to run oversize rod bearings. Balancing may not be totally necessary depending on how scarred up the journals may or may not be. When you...
Thanks for your opinions!I am ultimately shooting for 500 whp, but this will be a little while after completing the build. And I will just be running 93 octane.I understand the tradeoff of compression and boost, I guess the decision I'm trying to make is the tradeoff between a slightly...
You could try adjusting the clutch pedal since it is not too difficult. When does the pedal feel like the clutch is disengaging, up high or close to the floor?
The rear diff could definitely effect how it drives but I believe it should still shift the same. I can't help but feel that if it were clutch related more gears would be effected, but I could be wrong. Have you mentioned it to the guys that built it?
I believe this is where I should be posting this question, no other area seemed too suitable. Anyway, I'm a bit torn between two different setups, either manley pistons and rods, or wiseco pistons on eagle rods. The manley setup is slightly cheaper and has the compression (8.5:1) that I was...
This sounds like a similar issue I ran into recently, just the other way around. I bought a set of cables from someone on here to find out they were too short for my 98 GSX, I noticed that the section for the engine bay appears shorter. I was told they were out of a 95 or 96. It seems most...
Yea this is all pretty much dead on, a good rebuild is not too cheap. The best thing to do is to decide on your power goals, and then how long you may be willing to wait (to possibly save up some more money) to do a performance build. But I would definitely say bottom end first, it would be very...
Thanks for the photos and ideas! I wish the 2g had some removable grommets in the firewall. And as far as weight distribution, a battery is maybe 30-40lbs or so? I don't believe that would ever create any noticeable difference. An audio system and/or light weight panels can create more changes...
Yea just start small, tackling the easiest tasks first gaining some experience. And of course, there are plenty of experienced guys here willing to help with any questions you may have. The turbo will most likely not be your boost leak issue, possibly the gasket b/w the turbo and j-pipe, but...
Alright, thanks for the ideas guys! I have also heard of those grommets before, that has been one option in the back of my mind. And as far as making it reversible, I just like to do everything I can that way in case the need arises. You never know. It's also often results in a clean way of...
