This car sounds like a complete headache & I wouldn't touch it if it was me. If you are patient and look around a lot, you can still find clean DSMS out there that have been well maintained.I would certainly wait if I was you and buy another one.
Car was running hot, so I installed another fan to go with the slim line fan that's on my visteon radiator. I have a pusher and a puller fan both on all the time via link, a brand new mishimoto 19psi radiator cap, new thermostat, brand new head gasket, etc. I had the bumper off and the car was...
I Replaced the deatschwerks 320lph that I had in there with a 255 and the problem was solved. the fuel pump was under warranty, so I sent it back to deatschwerks and they tested it and said it was fine. However, they said they would send me a new one, anyways.I hadn't encountered this issue...
As Justin already pointed out, you can feed it from wherever you want as long as you are within spec, as listed by Justin and in the Holset FAQ.You need to have a gauge at the turbo - at least temporarily - to monitor the oil pressure to see if it's okay to feed from the head or anywhere...
Thanks for the advice. Opened up the restrictor to .092 and the oil pressure is perfect now. Also was able to find a new heatshield for $30 shippped in the classified ads, but I'm not even sure i'll need it at this point.Installed a perma-cool pusher fan in front of the radiator as well as a...
Yeah and if you've ever ripped a half of a gear at high boost on a turbo much bigger than a T-25, then let off and your bov has never been louder from releasing excess pressure, then it's obvious that it serves more than a 'cool sound' purpose and not having one could take it's toll on your...
Well said.. On another note, you safe over there in black forest man? We've been getting smoke all the way in Downtown Denver from the fires. Hope all is well.
Silly logic is trying to outsmart/question engineers who design one turbocharged car after another. Squeezing extra ponies out is one thing, doing a mod that puts your turbo at risk and has no real added gain is another.
I was just about to post this.. If Jack says this after years and years of tearing apart trannys and motors and rebuilding them, then I'd certainly listen if you are considering removing balance shafts.
Yeah I know the holset specs.. maybe you didn't notice my post in front of yours because it was like 2 mins before you posted yours, but My car was seeing way too much pressure before with a 4an line and no restrictor. I could barely give it any gas before it wanted to exceed 90+ psi oil...
So what are you thinking, should I just go to the end of the range and open it up to .095?I have a -12an return line. Before the restrictor I was seeing oil pressure as high as 90 psi at start up and I could barely give it any throttle or it would go over 80psi and probably well over 100 if...
My biggest concern is the oil pressure is perfect within spec as the car first heats up, but after I drive around a while and the temperature continues to rise, the oil pressure starts to fall and is borderline low, seeing 8-9 psi at idle and between 25-30 psi at low rpms when cruising. I have...
I may not cook my turbo due to a missing heat shield, but the temps I'm seeing under my hood right now can cook this turbo if I start running the high boost that I want to run in this 100 degree weather. The heat shield is just one thing that i'm wanting to add in a combination of things I'm...
Does anybody know where I can find a heat shield for my holset setup? I have a hx40 with the bep housing and I have it bolted up to a sbr cast manifold with a 38mm external welded to it. I've looked high and low but can't seem to find anything anywhere and I'm trying to lower the temps under...
I've searched but can't seem to find anyone who's ran a 16" pusher fan on their dsm. I don't have ac the ac condenser, have a big fmic, and was looking to add a fan and do some air vents at the top of the front bumper. My car has a visteon radiator with a spal puller fan that pushes around 1000...
Who built the motor? Thing that worries me about built motors is a lot of people don't do it right and you have to end up rebuilding the entire thing. I've seen it happen a few times.. IF a shop did it, do some research on the shop.Obviously test drive it but make sure that it's not smoking...
Absolutely not. Do yourself a favor: Try to find a stock DSM and have a mechanic check it out before you buy it.Then go through all the suggested maintenance/upgrade paths listed here:Tech Guide - DSMtuners
Honestly there is a ton of information on here about Holsets, and you could definitely get there for cheaper with your goals.. so I'll stray elsewhere and suggest taking a look at precision. You can get a PT6262 for a grand, and could easily make 600hp with that 2.3 you're running. Ha, maybe...
Well if it kinks, it would prevent oil from draining as it's supposed to and could cause premature turbo failure due to excess oil pressure. This was a common problem with the holsets in DSMs because the oil drains were too small and oil wasn't draining quick enough.Users then modified their...
Amazing times & work. Has me itching to get to the track with this new setup that I have and put down some fast times. Nothing like this, but fast times, nonetheless.
When he gets the turbo rebuilt, and re-tuned properly, it will be a good bump and a solid reference for people moving forward. Thanks for your contributions though. It's much appreciated!
Well that's exactly what happened to my turbo. Bought it used from someone off of craigslist, didn't rebuild it before slapping it on, and it went out on me going down the track. Big mistake.I'm going to have mine rebuilt. I hope you do the same, so we can see that car make the power that it...
A lot of you guys need to grow up, on both sides of the argument. Both cars are awesome in their own ways, and have their strengths and weaknesses out of the box. They both have tons of potential./End Thread.
hmm... please keep us updated! I probably don't quite have the funds for an exhaust manifold too right now, but I'll check it out. Maybe I'll get one in the near future.I'm definitely interested in the intake manifold though.
Did you buy it used or new? Maybe you just got a bad used turbo. Seems like the best way to go would be to have it rebuilt - likely form someone on this site - at much cheaper than going a different route.
Ya me too... I'm about to buy a built head from my buddy and purchase some cams too. A new intake manifold to go along with it would be awesome.Maybe we could get a group buy going? :rocks:
Ya custom fab seems to really be the way to go on those cars.. it's MUCH cheaper, and since you're doing a single turbo that's probably never been done before on that car, it's all going to be custom. lol. Good luck man, I can't wait to see the results!Subscribed!
Really cool man. My brother has had a modded VR4 for years that's so much fun, and they really are highway monsters. The only knock on them is how hard they are to work on and limited vendors make for high prices on parts, but they are great cars as you know, with tons of potential.I'll be...
I'd be down for a meet.. as long as I can get my new downpipe in time. IMO the best thing to do would be to meet up at Bandi on a wednesday night for 'CSP TAKE IT TO THE TRACK' night.Just have a mob of DSMs running down the track, one after another. :D
Very true. I'd definitely do something like that and have everything ported as well. A small 16G wouldn't be a bad idea either. My buddy and I used to race while he was running a small 16g and I had an EVO 3 16g. We both had ported manifolds, turbos, etc, and he would definitely spool on me from...
There's an entire thread on this discussion:http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/turbo-system-tech/331710-garrett-holset-turbo-users-your-oil-drain-may-too-small.html
You can't think that way though... there's a thread on here about oil drains being too small, and just because a couple of people have done it, doesn't mean it's the standard. The standard is -12 an lines per holset. If you go another way, you definitely need a way to monitor your oil pressure...
Oh believe me I know.. They do great work, it's obvious with the waiting list to get your car in there.Nah I wish I did. My laptop was broke when they tuned it.. they used their own.
