RESOLVED... installed 99 gsx ecu 359403, plug and go. Passed after 8 mile drive. I had looked many places to see if it would need programming to my 98gst but never an answer.

B-n-l had this with a 96 420a car. Similar symptoms but it would blow a fuse.
Cause was a wiring harness rubbing an shorted. It was intermittent though so was a bi*** to find. If memory serves, it was the bulk part over the trans close to the battery tray. Dont hold me to that though
