How much difference in Spool Time

One of the few factual item in FnF, "Thank goodness for ball bearing turbos". One thing to remember about the larger turbos is efficiency. 20psi on the GT30 will be much cooler than the EVO3 plus you can way more room before hitting the edge of the map. Check the recent thread for the folks...

    high altitude B.O.V

Hey Pagosa, another ABQ member like Brute. I have a boost only gauge in the GVR4 at the moment but can hear the BOV hissing when I let off the go pedal. It's not a ton but definitely audible. Same with the Talon but even louder due to the fresher motor likely pulling more vac. My WRX used to...
  12. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

The GVR4 is bone stock short of the MBC and K&N ( too dusty around here not to have a reusable filter ). It's the main reason I decided against the 16g altho I installed SS studs and oil feed line to make future upgrades easier. I have the parts to do the fuel pump rewire, gonna keep the boost...
  13. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

Yeah 187, I left out a ton of details. I was trying to be sarcastic, guess I better keep my day job huh? The 5psi of boost I could get would only come at 4500rpm or higher, talk about slow spool! This is what concerned me the most and the cracks confirmed what others had said about a 1g...
  14. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

Sorry guys, I guess I am missing the point on how a boost leak test could prevent me from breaking something? I mean yes, if I were boosting 20+psi it would be one of the first things I did but this is the DD. BTW I am going to run the WG source directly from the J-tube initially ( should only...
  15. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

No in/out, very little side-to-side. The MBC is tapped from the BOV signal line to the WG. Both the 16g and 2g mani are used, I had planned to eventually put on the Talon but would rather install on the Galant. The Talon has a major smoke problem and I would rather put a known non-smoker for...
  16. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

Shaft play on the cold side is minimal to none ( checked recently ). It does have a MBC, it's turned all the way in ( max boost ) and still won't do more than 5psi. It'w why I started suspecting the manifold and/or WG. Just gotta remember to set it down with the 16g! :thumb:
  17. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

No smoke but others are telling me to expect ugliness in the WG and outlet area. Worst case I am still gonna put the 16g on then use the current turbo to test the Talon. At least I KNOW this turbo does not smoke...:D

  19. ktmrider

Would this cause a boost problem?

I have not been able to boost past 5psi on the GVR4 since purchase. Decided to prep for a 16g and 2g mani swap and pulled the heat shield. Think this might be my boost problem? Guess this is a good example of a frail 1g manifold...

car smoking after new head install

That's a classic seal/guide problem. If the valve stems feel snug in the guides just replace the seals else go whole hog and do the guides too. Seals only can be done with the head on the car using a special tool ( about $200 or so ).
  21. ktmrider

car smoking after new head install

Just got mine back together, I did the same thing you did MJ and put a bad 14b that leaks at the fittings and blows smoke. Good thing, the smoke is turbo dependent. Very small amount of smoke at idle ( residual from bad head IMHO ) and only blows heavy when under boost/load. Sooo, the ported...

    Smoke Screen 2g... :(

Quite a few folks have seen the PCV cause smoke screens, especially the cheapo ones. It's easy enough to change and fairly inexpensive. Other things include valve stem seals and/or guides. You can check them by pulling the exhaust manifold to see if oil is spooging down the stems. In the...

    Head casting numbers

LOL, thinking about it I really don't need the numbers. All the research leading up to the discovery is probably fine. Last question, is there a difference on the turbo vs NA heads or is it only the intake cam?
  26. ktmrider

    Head casting numbers

Some newbies ( to the 4g63 world ) are playing with 2 different heads. One appears to be from a 2g ( altho sold as a race prepped 1g ), smaller intake ports and a casting number ( on the side by the water neck ) of Y3-8. The 1g/larger port head is stamped 2.0m with another number below that I...

Car Overheated / Overheating / Overheats [MERGED]

Yep, the failsafe does not need a "jiggle valve" since it opens up and does not block water flow when/if it dies.

Sorry to highjack, I wanted to verify the piston numbers above. The car I bought supposedly had the 2g pistons installed, I have the head off and the crown number is 63DT-F1.

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

Update, I found a recently refreshed 1g head on the GVR4 site for $175 shipped. I am on business travel thru 1/19 and it should be in my hands by then. After reading thru a bunch of posts regarding head upgrades and performance I decided to go the stock 1g route and swap over the Ti springs...

    Head Porting?

Post up in your local/regional forum ( if not done already ) as someone in the area will know of a competent machine shop ( competent being the key word ). oil sludge

Yep, the "chunky" oil blocked the passages and like mentioned at a minimum wiped out the bearings in the bottom end. :barf: I would suggest yanking the motor, complete disassembly, hot tank the block, and check the tolerances on both the crank and rods.
  32. ktmrider

car smoking after new head install

Yep, I saw where quite a few folks replaced the PCV and eliminated the smoking, cheap insurance. I will probably switch to a catch can down the road tho. I ran thru the gammut, high oil pressure, turbo seals, etc. Not until pulling the exhaust mani and seeing all the oil spooging down the...

car smoking after new head install

Had the exact same thing happening on my car, tons of unburned oil on the piston crowns. Thinking the smoke was turbo seal related I pulled the e-manifold and found raw oil coming down the exhaust valves from the guide/seals. Here is the thread for my pics from the the Newbie section as I just...

Vacuum leak=misfire? Oil light at idle?

+1, excellent way to find leaks. Could be the pressure sensor going bad/blocked or the oil pump is getting weak. The pressure sensor ( two near the oil filter mount ) is the smaller of the two with an unusual shape, requires a special tool as a hex wrench or socket will not fit. Put an oil...

    Understanding Compression Test Results

The "wet" test is good for diagnosing low "dry" test numbers. Putting oil ( small amount as suggested ) helps determine if the rings are not sealing well ( numbers will go up wet ). If the numbers stay the same you have head problems. Most all parts stores carry the compression and leakdown...

Car Overheated / Overheating / Overheats [MERGED]

Yep, t-stat is going. If you replace look into the "fail safe" models that go full open if/when dying. Prevents overheating, downside is no heat if in a chilly area.
  37. ktmrider

    my heater doesnt blow hot

Low coolant, clogged core, or air trapped in the core/lines. At idle the water pump is not pushing as much coolant, increasing RPM's gets the coolant flowing better ( low or plugged symptoms ). "Burp" the coolant system ( with the heater temp on full Hot and in recirc ). Once full do a...

removing oil feed line with turbo on car

There is also a small bolt holding the oil and coolant feed lines on the block side of the turbo, very hard to reach ( nearly impossible ) if not separated from the manifold.

How to fix your oil cap from leaking [Merged 3-8] leak leaky

New oil caps including the gasket? You can replace just the gasket ( solved my oil leak issue ). Also how are you sure the PCV is good? Last check to make sure the vent tube is hooked up to the intake, this also helps evacuate excess pressure in the head.

92 talon with a rough idle after head install

Classic signs of a vacuum leak. Had similar issues on my Talon, found a big hole in the BOV line nearer the valve. Also found the PCV hose was off and plugged ( from the head side ) and a cheasy rubber plug in the IM. Once I had everything hooked up and sealed the car idled great and did not...

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

Thx vern, appreciate the time and input. I'm gonna make some calls this week to a local shop that I've have great luck with in the past. Once I run the prices past the home boss I'll decide the next step. My power goals are mixed, most likely I will use it for auto-x and limited track/time...

Help diag. trouble code P0128, tried the obvious already

Oops, the VFAQ lists the lower 2 pin connection sensor for the ECU and the top one for the fans. The third is a one pin for the temp gauge. I would definitely check it out at Welcome! in the Misc section. I am not familiar with the late model 2g car values, maybe someone else can chime in?!?

Help diag. trouble code P0128, tried the obvious already

I think your to-do list looks good, especially the check of the sensor. One note, my 1g has 3 different sensors on the t-housing. One for the ECU, one for the fans, and one for the temp gauge in the cluster. Myself not being familiar with the 2g, are you sure you swapped out the appropriate...

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

Ok, got the head off today, see the attached pics. [RESOLVED] EXTREMELY high oil pressure!!! Please help!!!

That is possible, check my other thread for the "suspect" valve stem seals. While I agree high oil pressure is better than low, 110psi at cold/idle is a bit much. I have not checked the pressure yet since porting the relief valve and installing another cooler, I am pulling the head and...

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

Yup, the previous owner installed ARP head studs but I'm not sure if he used a MLS gasket or not. Definitely mixed reviews on the metal gaskets, I'll think about the power goals and go from there.

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

Thx folks, I tried to use a cheapo spring compressor but the cam boss clearance is too small. Probably a good thing, like stated no sense in cutting corners at this point. Gonna yank the head later this week, will post up results after.
  48. ktmrider

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

Anyone? I can't post in the mainstream threads yet, I'm also thinking if I have a problem on the exhaust side there are probably issues on the intake side too. I may end up pulling the head and checking all.

Oil in exhaust port, white smoke

History, car was bought on eBay for $1000. Rebuilt 6 bolt with 2g pistons. Car smoked like crazy at startup, never stopped. My buddy bought the car, saw bubbles in the coolant, and replaced the head with a built 1g ( yes, another unknown! ). He then found a 91 Laser, bone stock, for $1500 and I...

car smoking new motor/gray /blue smoke

Hey mjb, what was the resolution if any? My Talon is in the exact same boat, I found oil in the #3 exhaust port but it's literally pouring down the valves and pooling. I suspect stem seals but am in the middle of the requisite "Search" mode right now. Thanks for any info!
