^ agreeWelding supply stores can vary big time in price to re fill cylinders. When I am working in my home town most of the contractors have a deal to only but supply's and gas from Mathis Tri Gas. I have never had bad results. Now as a walk off the street consumer, the same supply...

Use aluminum tape Urban. That pipe is pretty small in diameter. Is the job test for car manifolds? It is much easier to learn to weld pipe on large diameter. That way you slowly learn to adjust your body/hand/torch around pipe. Then move on to smaller sizes.

Something I want to mention seeing the welds on the oil pan. When you GTAW carbon steel, it is best to move quite quickly. If you are welding thin pieces of steel or have an open gap you are welding over, if the torch is making a puddle and you keep putting heat into the puddle, oxygen will...

    TIG suggestions please

All Miller Maxstar series are DC only. No aluminum.I am a big Miller supporter for inverter welders. But I am also super die hard for Lincoln engine drives. But I have just recently used a Thermal Arc 185 tig inverter that my buddy acquired, and they are very solid machines. He picked his...

I think the tig fingers use a slightly different material. You can use almost anything, as long as it can with stand heat and not start on fire. Here is a pic of a weld blanket.

Most welding supply shops have them. You can just tell them you need a simple weld blanket. The one I use is 3'x3'. So pretty small. The real successful tube frame fab shops put an amazing amount of time into fit up of the joints and an amazing amount of detail in the welding. And it's...

!!!!!!!!!Just kidding!!!!!!! SorryUhm a few suggestions on Chrom. Hate giving away secrets. It does weld just like carbon steel, but great care must be taken to have the weld area cool slowly. If not, the joint will crack or fail. I wrap a fiberglass weld blanket tightly around the...

    Nebraska Cold Start

Just a Nebraska FYI.My family just moved to a new house in Nebraska. Well the garage is full of boxes so both cars say outside. And my 2012 Chevy Traverse didn't want to start. And my dodge Ram barely turned over but did start. Both very new vehicles. It's kinda cold lol

    RWD 4G63 Subframe mod?

Haters gonna Hate :DIf Defiant was still here, holy crap..... I can only imagine his reply.I probably would have actually left most of the DSM's front end intact, if the v8 fit between the factory frame rails you could have simply cut out the center of the fire wall. The front...

I just feel like I get cleaner starts if I let the purge from the torch do it's thing before the arc lights. My dad is a industrial Boilermaker and he was on a job welding 6" sch 80 ERTi-5. He sent me a picture of a 50lbs container of filler rod. Price $7000.I can't even imagine the...

I just added the purge part. But I agree with your torch flows. This was a live demonstration. I have seen a photo or two on google that compares gas lenses to standard collets. It was the same smoke tint in the gas.And I have my torch set to around 17-20. I have a valve on my torch and...

Standard collets and cups worked great for decades. If the torch is close to the metal the heavy Argon will push the air out if the way. Long style cups where prominent then.Modern gas lens work the same as suction diffusers on water pumps. The mesh screen makes the argon have a more laminar...

I use the same Pyrex cups and gas lens.Honestly I don't pay a lot attention to the flow on purge. I let it go until it feels "good" 30 Sometimes higher 45.But coming out of the torch I like it closer to 17-20. And I like to purge the spot before I weld for at least 1-3 seconds.Like...

6010 is a biatch to weld with. And it is tough to make it look decent. The Solar "B" Flux kinda burns off. It isn't really thick. And if there is any residue you can spray it out with some compressed air.No where near as bad as smaw flux lol

Electrode positive. So + on the stinger, and - for ground clampWith 6010 you have to step the rod, kinda like a pause, then whip forward, pause, and repeat. Some welders light out between whips. And I noticed from Gambles Youtube reviews that the thermal arc control panel...

    Exhaust Manifold Build!!

304, 304L, or 321 stainless?I really like the smooth long radius bends.Only critique is if I was going with a wall thickness like that, I would have constructed with Inconol. Which is actually more suited for Autocross/Track applications, with longer duration heat cycles. But I have...

One thing I have seen from experience is that most JLG aerial lifts come with Lincoln Invertec 275s welders. Now these machines literally sit outside 24/7/365. Rain, hot sun, and snow for years and still work. They are designed for rugged use though.I don't think a Miller maxstar or Dynasty...

Yes you need to apply at the local union hall. There are a few in Texas that are under the Untied Association. They all have different jurisdictions. You could "back door" if you are a good pipe welder that can pass SMAW and GTAW tests and have a history in fabrication. That would put you at...

^On really thin ss plate it is common to "sweat" (no filler) the pieces together. But if you aren't the best, you can leave craters on the back side. And this can also be because no back purge is used.
