JACKS TRANSMISSIONS IS DONE WITH DSM's

If parts are going away and the demand is there- we can make our own parts. Gears, synchros, hubs and sliders, etc. There is light at the end of the tunnel, but how much you are willing to pay for the parts you need for the trans is the real issue. I have to make 25-50 of the same part at a...

I very much appreciate all of the kind comments in this thread! That's one of the reasons why if we do spill the beans as to all of our secrets- I will feel just fine about it.

JACKS TRANSMISSIONS IS DONE WITH DSM's

We never used the cheap stuff. Always the latest and greatest OEM parts from Mits. There was 1 output seal which many people have difficulty installing correctly, though. That is the only seal we replaced with aftermarket to assure it would not leak after installation. The quality of the...

JACKS TRANSMISSIONS IS DONE WITH DSM's

Hello everyone!Figured I'd better clear the air a little in here. We love DSMs and know that if it wasn't for this platform, we would not be where we are now. DSMs have been the backbone of this company. If we have the manpower and time, we would continue with the DSM trans builds, but the...

Thanks Chad. Sorry about Friday. We were here until 4PM as we had our xmas party that evening. The holidays threw a wrench in some of the scheduling. I'll have a little chat with Tim about your wasted time on Friday and we will find a solution. He was supposed to make sure everyone knew we...

They are all made in China which is why they are so cheap. I would stay away from it and rebuild your factory OEM shaft with parts from Mitsu. The garbage from China will not live and can cause an accident.

    f5m33 Trans upgrades inquire.

Shock loading is when you engage the clutch so harshly that you feel the car jump or chirp the tires. You see it a lot with FWD owners for some reason. Every gear they shift into they have to shock the system so hard that you hear the tires chirp. That will ruin many parts in the drive-train...

You would have to send us the gears for fitment and machine work. It normally comes up to $150 per gear and that includes the double sycnhros. They will just pop in and go at that point. We have done a few of the TT engines in the NA cars here using the NA trans and all held up just fine...

The FWD gear-set is a completely different animal over the AWD EVO gears. We have a few options for the FWD, but I suppose it really depends on your power goals and the kind of racing it will see.If you are looking for DIY mods the best one is to install a Quaife LSD. We can also convert...

Hello all! Thought I would spend some time to chime in here...I made the page on our site for our customers considering an engine build from us. I did not expect it to explode all over the web and with so many comments. It is merely there to allow the customer to make an educated decision...

    Using a evo 2 transmission in a 2g

It really depends on how you look at it. The shift rails and forks in the EVO 2 are really nice and strong. the 3-4 gears are also very good.If you can get one with the LSD, that's another plus right there too as buying a new LSD would cost about $800.The little things like final drive...

    Using a evo 2 transmission in a 2g

The EVO 2 trans is the same inside as a regular DSM trans except for the shift forks, front diff and gear ratios.I am not 100% sure, but I believe the 1st and 2nd gear in those are terribly weak. It has been awhile, but I think I had to swap the input shaft, 1st and 2nd gears from the last...

    2G Twisted axle splines

Bingo! That's 1 clue and the way the axle rusted seems to indicate an auto parts store unit to me. These cars are getting so old now who knows, just make sure you get an OEM one next time around and i would be willing to bet it never happens again. Oh, and when a parts store says it's OEM...

    2G Twisted axle splines

The axles in both of those pics appear to be units from an autoparts store. If they in fact are, then that's your problem. Those cheap China made units always fail and I believe they are very dangerous due to the poor quality of the parts and metallurgy.Find some original factory axles or...

1g clutch slave or clutch going bad?

The slave just has an o-ring seal inside with a piston and that's it. If the slave is bad, it will leak. If it's not leaking, it's not bad.The master is the only part which could have an internal leak.
  33. JackM

1g clutch slave or clutch going bad?

If you have a puncture, then you would lose fluid. Air can't get into the system unless you are losing fluid somewhere. Is the fluid level in the reservoir low or need to be filled? If you are not losing fluid, then you don't have a leak unless it is an internal seal leak inside the master...

Used ACT 2100 Clutch Good Idea Or Bad

The seller didn't take pics of the important areas like a close-up shot of the pressure plate surface for cracks and with a straight edge on it for distortion.I would avoid it. If you are not showing off the surfaces that closely, then it's probably crap.

Clutch drag from hydraulics, whole in the line master cylinder, slave cylinder?

    Front Axle Suggestions/Opinions

I wouldn't use any of them. The auto store axles are of horrid quality and dangerous. You would be far better off buying a used, untouched and OEM CV shaft from a salvage yard. I hoard as many as I can in my area so I can rebuild them using OEM pieces without worrying that my customer will get...

Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

Yes 90-91 have a different center diff lower housing, intermediate shaft and 3-4 floating gear helix angle. So a 90-91 center diff can't be used in a 92-99 trans without major surgery.
  38. JackM

1g clutch slave or clutch going bad?

Was the fluid level low? The system should not have to be bled like that for no reason. Something is not right.
  39. JackM

1g clutch slave or clutch going bad?

The assembly bleeds itself. The only time you need to bleed it is when the master or slave are replaced. If the fluid level is good and there are no leaks bleeding will do nothing. You likely have a broken clutch.
  40. JackM

Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

Make sure the tooth count of the ring gear matches your car and original gear. It should be 58 teeth on the ring gear. The 97+ units had 57 and that's enough to ruin many parts in the center diff. If your donor trans is a1 g then swapping the gears as a set should solve all of the problems. To...
  41. JackM

1g clutch slave or clutch going bad?

Well first you had a clutch related issue but now ruined your trans by forcing it into gear too. When a trans blocks you from a gear it is trying to tell you something is wrong with the clutch. When you ignore it and force it anyway you just threw hundreds of more dollars out the window with now...

    Grind before entering any gear.

I would say more likely that the trans does have damage. Grinding is a very bad sign as a synchro will do everything it can to not grind if it is healthy. If it's easy for you to remove and install the trans I would just pop it back in and see how it feels. If it is a pain to remove/install then...

    Weird Transmission Seal Question

+1 or the sun gears in the diff are very loose and about to break and blow through the case which is common with FWD cars. Either way, the diff needs to be pulled and looked at. You may have saved the trans from a catastrophic failure by catching it and it is very likely salvageable.
  45. JackM

    Grind before entering any gear.

I good rule of thumb is if your trans is grinding, then your synchro is weak and wiped out. If it 'blocks' you from a gear, then it is trying to tell you something and it is still healthy, but if you continue to force it until it grinds it will be ruined. The synchros a very well designed in...

Gears grinding, not a drag issue

You say you have a new trans. From who? If it's not from a highly experienced builder then I would guess that your input shaft preloads are way too tight. Your symptoms seem to follow this. The case will expand and twice the rate as the steel input shaft, so the end bearing preloads could be...

2g transmission gears into a 1g transmission swap

There are many threads about this, but real quick:If you are going to try to swap the guts over you have a lot of work ahead of you. Things like the shift rails, shift rail ends, 3-4 fork, gear helix angles, reverse idler shaft, 5/reverse gear hub/slider and fork assembly, end cover, front...

Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

I would check to be 100% sure that your lower bearing race on the bell-housing side is pressed all the way down. Sometimes there could be debris or a tight fit that would prevent it from seating all of the way without some help. What you can try to verify that you have mismatched gears is to...

    Transmission Issues

Well that pretty much sums it up then. Your clutch is dragging badly and you need to pull the trans again to check:Engine-to-trans alignment dowel pins. Pressure plate finger location when assembled. Disk for installation damage (bent). Proper torque to pressure plate bolts. It sucks...

    Transmission Issues

I've had this problem before in a few vehicles and it can be very difficult to diagnose. In your first post, it sounds to me like you had a dragging clutch at low RPM causing your issue, but when you said it shifts fine into all gears while at a stop and running in your 2nd post, that threw...
