  1. compression

Hmmm, how confident are you in your compression tester? I only ask because if it passed a leakdown and the compression #s didn't increase when you did a wet test, maybe the tester is just reading low.
  2. compression

Sounds like somebody has leaking valves. 155+ across all 4 would be ideal. I feel the need to ask though, did you do a *proper* compression test, with the car warm and the throttle held all the way open?
  3. Need some main bearing advice

Well, after having weighed my options, I'm thinking that I'm going to buy a stock shortblock as it will come with a warranty. I'm not looking to make huge power on this car, as there isn't anywhere to use it in Seattle anyway. I'll probably just end up cleaning out my oil pump with wd-40, and...
  4. Need some main bearing advice

*UPDATE*My oil has the sparkle of doom :(. There were also little metal chunks coming out, so it is definitely a bearing gone bad. That being the case has anyone here ever swapped out a crank in a car with spun bearings with good results? I'm not trying to half-ass it, but it is an otherwise...
  5. Knock

The valve cover has some rivets in it which hold up a small metal plate, check to see if that is loose.
  6. Need some main bearing advice

I just have to wait till my wonderful 60hr workweek is up :notgood: Plans for this weekend are changing the oil, checking for exhaust leaks, and if I get sparkles of doom in the oil, pulling the oil pan. Thanks for the input guys.
  7. Twin turbo? [Merged 11-6]

Best example of a 4g63tt is the one that was swapped into a FC3S which runs 2 16Gs. Search on rx7club.com
  8. Need some main bearing advice

Well, Its definitely not a loose wire, I just replaced those due to one of mine literally disintegrating, plus I changed my plugs recently and made sure the wires were tight. Oil pressure seems fine I really need to get an aftermarket gauge to say for sure, but the stock one reads a little on...
  9. Is this a knock off 50 trim

Cant say for sure, but that "Turbocharger" stamp on the side looks suspiciously like quite a few turbos I've seen on ebay.
  10. Need some main bearing advice

*Sorry for the long read* So here is my problem. My car is a 90 TSI AWD, stock bottom end with some headwork done and balance shafts removed. I rebuilt the motor ~3000 miles ago and all of the clearances checked out at the time. Broke it in, and drove it from South Bend, IN to Seattle ( roughly...
  11. How long to pull an engine and tranny

Usually about an Hour and a half to two hours if you know whats up and have a gorilla sized friend. Thats pulling the Motor + trans out of a 1g AWD in fully stock trim. However, if it is your first time, don't plan on less than 3 or 4 hours, inevitably something wont go as planned. Also note...
  12. Topline Head Gasket

My friend's car was running 22psi on a 16g w/ a topline gasket + copper spray. We checked it out when we had the head off recently, everything looked fine. However, as Joe said, keep that knock in check and It'll hold.
  13. BAR to PSI conversion on gauge

also, just for future reference, google has an awesome calculator built in. You can seriously convert just about anything. Just type in " unit1 to unit2 " in the search bar.Jeff
  14. Need help with electricals, please!

In my experience, all the dash lights coming in is a sign that the alternator isn't charging the battery. You said you replaced that, so the next step would be to check the charging circuit. Trace all the wires and see if you can find a break somewhere. Also, check all of the fuses in the...
  15. Firing Order [Merged 5-7]

Its called wasted spark. It can work like that because of the design of a four stroke engine. Just because both pistons are at the top of the stroke, doesn't mean that they are both in the ignition phase of the cycle. For example: cylinder 1 could be in the end of its compression phase, with...
  16. SAFC2 on NT4g63

    g4cs + 4g67/61 head :) that'd be fun.
  17. Anyone using a Knock-Off External Wastegate?

I ran one on my rx7 for quite a while before I sold the car, around a year. Maintained the boost level just fine, never had any problems, and I inspected it frequently to check the diaphragm for tears. I'm pretty sure if it will hold up to the exhaust from a turbocharged N/A rotary engine...
  18. valves still hitting piston!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure I read it properly, but if you take off the belt, the cams will turn, or the crank will turn? Two things to check: 1. Are there spark plugs in it? and 2. Is it in gear?
  19. lets talk MAF(S)....

Well, you have a few options. 1. You can go with a maf-t + gm maf, mafs are easy and cheap to replace, you can vent if you wish, but I've heard of issues with inconsistent tuning. 2.You can go with a standalone, aem, haltech, or my personal favorite: Megasquirt. Completely erases the maf...
  20. When under hard acceleration car cuts out BAD??

Kind of sounds like fuel cut.
  21. How many known cases of crankwalk in a 6bolt?

ANY car can crankwalk, its just not that common. I've heard of a couple of 6 bolts walking, but it was due to poor assembly.
  22. Secondary Injectors? Who's Got 'Em?

Idle and cruise. Your car will always idle like stock , and if you use staged injection, either via a boost activated switch(which is better IMO), or by rpm/load, you can have massive potential up top, while still getting stock highway fuel economy.
  23. Everett

I'm the assist. manager at Jimmy Johns on 106th. You probably havn't seen my ride though, Its been having some fun....issues.
  24. Everett

Holy crap, another Jeff who works mon-fri in bellevue and drives a dsm.. I'm surprised I havn't seen you around yet :D
  25. what kind of spacers do i need for rx7 rims?

I do believe its 3/8". You can find them at most good tire shops/pep boys type places. I do believe mine ran me like 20 bucks. Be prepared to grind on the rear frame a bit.
  26. Heating fuel line for better gas mileage

Dont get me wrong, I'm not sayin I'd cruise it to work, just showing that you can get better mileage through vaporizing the gas.
  27. Heating fuel line for better gas mileage

Back in '73 Opel won the shell oil gas mileage challenge by using vaporized gasoline. They heated it before it hit the carb, and were able to achieve 376 mpg in their test car.
  28. Car Overheated / Overheating / Overheats [MERGED]

If its put together properly, its not going to blow up. Taking it easy isn't going to make problems go away, it will just take more time to notice them.
  29. Car Overheated / Overheating / Overheats [MERGED]

What, the motoman method? Thats not nuts, thats the proper way to break in an engine like ours. I finished assembling my engine the day before I drove my car from Indiana to Seattle, I took it out on some back roads, beat the piss out of it, and ended up with 150psi across the board.
  30. Car Overheated / Overheating / Overheats [MERGED]

Old chevy smallblocks are all iron, which means that they arent as prone to head warpage or blown headgaskets as a result of overheating. Overheating the motor would indeed cause the pistons/rings to expand more than usual, which could lead to better ring seating. However, on a motor like ours...
  31. [RESOLVED] really bad oil leak...need help!!

Check the turbo oil feed bolt in the head, and also check where the block/head meet on that side. I've seen a few cases where the gasket will let go on that oil passage and spray oil everywhere on that side of the motor. Good luck.
  32. anyone running a gutted mas?

The honeycombs exist to smooth out the airflow before the measurement is taken. While the car would still run without the honeycombs, it would run poorly and you would be extremely lean. This *can* be compensated for to some extent, but its not worth it. The sensor is junk.Jeff
  33. Is this a stock clutch?

Been a while since I've done a clutch, but yea, that looks stock to me...and maybe its just the pic, but that thing looks abused :/
  34. Noise coming from front passenger wheel.

I'll throw in a third vote for bad wheel bearing. My car has been doing the same thing recently, and when my tie rod end broke ( which was tons of fun at 7 am ) the shop I took it to said that my front right bearing had some play in it.
  35. Dual intercoolers [Merged 11-8, again] twin double two Duel stage Intercooler ??

Yes, it has been done. A local guy welded three SMICs together and made a front mount. It was ugly, but the car ran a 12.7....
  36. V6 into DSMs [merged 12-17-06]

The short answer: Yes, its possible. There is someone on this board with a 6g72 in their 1g, so I can only assume it would fit in a 2g as well (I'm pretty sure its the same guy with the twin charged 1g). The longer answer: How much do you like to weld? Engine swaps really arent as hard as...
  37. [RESOLVED] Crank will only turn 1/4

Dont sweat it, It takes a while of working on these things day in day out to get the problem solving knack down :). Just to clarify really quick, is the engine in the car?
  38. [RESOLVED] Crank will only turn 1/4

Hmm.. Well, a few things to check. Remove your valve cover ( if you havn't already) to check if all of your valvetrain is still intact. Secondly, look down the spark plug holes to make sure there isn't something in your engine. Slim chance, but I've seen it :/. Lastly, with the belt off...
  39. [RESOLVED] Crank will only turn 1/4

Is the belt on now? If so, do you have all the timing marks lined up correctly? If not, are there spark plugs in the head?
  40. Smoking engine question

If the car isn't too far away from you, finding out whether or not the rings are gone is as simple as a compression test. Just a thought if you are up in the air on buying it.
  41. Ebay Parts

I've always had good results with ebay external wastegates. I ran one on my rx7 for quite a while without issues, and several of my friends run them on their dsms.
  42. N/T Long block in a Turbo Car

Just a thought, a friend of mine ran N/T pistons in his car with a 20g and a good amount of boost on pump gas. While those pistons WILL give out much faster if you knock, if you run a good tune, its quite possible to make good horsepower and get rid of a bit of lag while your at it. Of...
  43. Ebay Cat Converter

Go to summit racing. I just picked up a new 2.5" inlet/outlet cat for like 55 bucks.
  44. VRS FWD 1g Turbo Back Exhaust

Not sure about the install issues, but i'll vouch with dsmboostin15 on the sound, I've heard and driven his car, and it sounds awesome in either case.
  45. [RESOLVED] Starter turning on it's own after head swap.

First off, thanks to whoever changed my thread title, much more informative than my crazy frantic typing :). Secondly, problem solved. On my 90 ( not sure about other years) there are two plugs near the battery which are absolutely identical, and as a result are quite easy to switch. When...
  46. [RESOLVED] Starter turning on it's own after head swap.

Ok, so i swapped out my head last night because nearly all of the valve stem seals were bad. I buttoned everything back together today, went to start the car, and before i had a chance to turn the key to 'start' the car started cranking over, I freaked out, removed the key, and it wouldn't...
  47. meet?

Provided I can get my head swapped out, I'm down for a seattle area meet.
  48. afc questions

The afc cant compensate much past 680cc injectors when coupled with a stock ECU because of the way it alters the airflow signal, which also affects the timing curve. After a certain amount of lying to the ECU, the car will begin to run like crap. However, if you were to get a chip to...
  49. clutch alignment tool

Yes, a dowel rod works just fine, as does a small ( 10-11mm) deep socket on an extension. Alternatively, you can just put the disk behind the plate and put in some of the bolts VERY loose, enough to hold the disk to the flywheel, but not so much that it wont move. Then, go all the way around...
