Do yourself a favor and invest in a quality torque wrench. You are going to use it a 1000 times it is worth its weight in gold. Also you would be suprised how tight you can "hand tighten" something.Get a FSM off ebay....every bolt has a torque rating for a reason
I need help with my build!!!! Jeff when I get all the parts together you should introduce me to Tom. Im a newbie at putting an engine together so the more knowledgable people the better.Great thread :thumb:
I was also wondering about this. I picked up a bare 6bolt block and was planning on doing the rebuild myself but If i can get a complete assembly of my short block for a reasonable price why not? Ive never assembled a motor before but I am totally amp'd on doing it myself just to prove I can do...
Tech Guide: 1G 4G63 N/T Upgrades - DSMtunersDo some searching before you post. The tech article is a permanent artifact on this website and is a great source of information. So is the search button. Good luck with the build.
I would def agree with the idea of it being the alternator. Sometime they will die slowly and work when you think they are broken and not work when you think they are fine. Go to autozone and have them check it. They do it for free. Also if you dont have an autozone near you a rebuilt one will...
At that price its def worth the investment. If it doesnt turn out to be a simple fix then part it out. You will most definitly get your money back in parts.
Ok so lets clear the air. I am very capable with a wrench as I did all the work on my previous DSM. No I havent rebuilt a motor before but there is a first time for everything. I know quite a few knowledgable people in the DSM world including OLDMAN. My main question was really about where I...
Are there any resources out there for rebuilding a 6bolt motor from a bare block? Im looking for something with details and the always helpful illustrations. Ive never put an engine together so the more information the better. Thanks
Replace the thermostat. If that doesnt help check for play in the water pump pulley. If its loose or wobbles time to replace it and if you have to replace the water pump might as well do the timing belt. OEM of course. But do everything in order. Check the thermostat first and hope for the best...
how important is the ground wire that was attached to my stock downpipe because an idiot friend of mine cut it when trying to remove the downpipe and now car has wierd electrical problems....my dash and headlights are dim for about a minute or 2 when i first start the car now and then brighten...

i need ## opinions on whether or not a 3" mas and maft are a good idea for my fwd laser...what are the pros and cons of using one....how hard are they to install and use..any info and opinions are appreciated..thanks guys
10 12 14 and 17mm sockets, screw drivers, PB Blaster, a breaker bar, hammer, patience and some good luck. I have used GI's auto salvage a few times its in Montville or Pine Brook cant remember they are right next to each other but it is on New Rd. Dont know what they have on the way of 2g's then...
It wont fit. The taillights on the 1ga and 1gb are different. The whether its from a talon eclipse or laser doesnt matter as the frames are all the same. Try searching this topic it has been discussed before.
try posting this in the "Handling tech" section you will find more people with greater knowledge browsing through that section. Good luck....Im a fwd and would love to have a great all around handling car like your looking for so I would like to know the answer to your questions also.
The FSM will be your best friend in this situation. You can buy the book, the cd, or download the pdf file for it. There is a whole volume just on electrical. Take your time and fix everything correct the first time or start over with a different harness as stated above.
I do in fact have a full 3" exhause right now but I want to go smaller in order to reduce some of the noise. This car is my daily driver and I just want to get as little attention as possible. I plan on keeping my 3" exhaust for when I go with a bigger turbo but since I am only running a s16g...
Just trying to find out who makes a full 2.5" downpipe for the 1g fwd. Im not looking for a downpipe with a 2.5 inlet and a 3" outlet Im looking for a full 2.5" from inlet to outlet and something with good fitment. Thanks. Just so you know everything I see on ebay has a 3" outlet.
So I just paid a lot of money to have my water pump and timing belt replaced 3 weeks ago and now my car is over heating again. Any ideas? And no I dont believe it was an oem water pump since the job was done by a local mechanic. It was probably something from Napa
Great looking intercooler and great buy but your radiator is going to have a hard time breathing. Over heating looks like its definitly going to be an issue.
Always go over the car and make sure all the maintenance is done on the car and like everyone else said the safc can pretty much be moved anywhere in the car as long as the wires reach. The squeeling is more than likely a worn or loose belt and should be tightened or replaced. Spend the money on...
I need the part number and name for the sensor in the thermostat housing that reads the coolant temp. Not the one for the fans or the one for the gauge on dashboard I need the 3rd one that sends the temperature reading to the ecu. It has 2 wires going into it.This is for a 1g 6bolt'Thanks
All the Napa's in my area carry them so I usually get them from there or I order them from www.extremepsi.com if Im already placing and order with them
Go to Walmart and buy a voltmeter, you can get one for like $20 then have your friend jump start your car. If the alternator is working you should be running somewhere around 14v. The battery itself should only be 12v. If you can get it running and get to an autozone they can test it for free...
You may also want to check the terminals on the battery and make sure they are clean and have a nice tight clamp on the batter and check the condition of the alternator relay in your fuse box
I 2nd that idea...make sure you are using the ngk bpr6es.....and check the gaps on them as they are not pre-gapped...ngk wires are your best friend. Get in the habbit of changing your plugs every oil change....they are a copper core and dont last as long...very cheap thing to keep up maintenence...
So I just had my head rebuilt timing belt replaced and water pump replaced and now my car is running like garbage...its real rough and choppy sounding and shakes quite a bit. Mechanic said I need new plugs and wires...but to me I think its more than that...Car smells like its running...
http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Engineprimer/1G/index.htmuse that. Its helped me plenty of times you will love it. Save it on your computer as a favorite because sooner or later you may want to come back to it. Hope it helps.Just click on the engine back picture....its a virtual tour...
Try never to pry against the head with anything you most likely damage it...try a rubber mallet...if that doesnt work get a BIGGER Hammer and use a wood block wrapped in a shop towel or something
Im swapping turbos tomorrow and was thinking about changing some of the studs for bolts instead so I was wondering what size bolts I would need....size...thread...diameter..blah blah blah...anyone have an idea?
B+ wire? what is that?car battery is only 1.5 yrs old and alternator is a rebuilt one...i bought the exact same alternator from autozone last january (06) and Havent had a problem with my voltage until last night. How can I know if my regulator is defective...where is it and how would I...
http://www.autozone.com/N,16400086//shopping/partTypeResultSet.htmManual trans calls for 65amp....the car was at normal operating temp when I checked the voltage....could this be caused by the belt being too tight or too loose because it definitly doesnt feel too loose to me
