  1. Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

Yup, all 3 of you are on the ball. New center diff housing has cuts, old one doesn't and the intermediate shaft is mark free. The transmission in my 91 was already non-original, just described as a 1G MT AWD. This parts transmission is a 93 I believe, and seems to have the marks on the teeth...
  2. Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

Hi Jack, Similar question: I tried bolting together to check my clearances on the upper center differential bearing, and had similar troubles getting the 3rd case plate down over the input, intermediate, and center differentials. The 2 gear shafts spin nicely, but adding the center differential...
  3. Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

Hi Jack, thanks for the info, both recent and 4 years ago. It does seem to mesh okay, but even spinning by hand I feel a little vibration. Would be terrible with load and more RPMs I'm sure.I have a parts transmission an hour away, that's where the front output shaft came from. Will likely...
  4. center diff removal

Hi. Resurrecting an old thread here, sorry. I searched for quite awhile when I couldn't get my center differential to slip out of my AWD also. My problems were caused by a locked up transfer case destroying my already worn center differential gears. Sounds like craziloki might have had a similar...
  5. Front diff ring gear to front output shaft interference

Hi all, I'm trying to wrap up a budget repair on my W5M33 trans, my center differential grenaded and took out the front output shaft. Finally getting close to having everything I need together to bolt up.My current issue is that the front differential ring gear seems to be interfering with...
  6. Center shaft stuck in differential

Update on progress: Pulled the transmission last weekend, have been working on getting it apart since then. The output shaft finally came out with 8lb sledge persuasion. As far as I can tell it has some material buildup about an inch in from the VCC side splines that wouldn't all it to slip...
  7. Center shaft stuck in differential

Hi twicks69, I was close to PMing you since you seem to weigh in on lots of transmission questions. Will probably pull transmission tomorrow and give that a shot.4 pistons: Semi comforting to find out it happened to someone else. Did your center diff assembly also refuse to slide out of the...
  8. Center shaft stuck in differential

donniekak: Thanks for the PMs, will keep it in mind. Not super worried about the center shaft, as it has pretty worn splines anyway. Mainly just need it out.Update: In addition to the center shaft refusing to come out the differential housing and side gear won't slip off towards the...
  9. Center shaft stuck in differential

Hello all, Short story, grenaded center diff in my 91 MT AWD, trying to disassemble. Intermediate cover is off, transfer case is off, differential output gear and passenger side gear are out, as are pinion shaft and pinion gears. The center shaft (that protrudes to lock into t-case won't slip...
  10. 1G rear diff

Hi Rsawd95DSM, I might be able to find one for you if you still need it. It's the stepped diameter bolt that comes down through the bushing to the "mustache" bar, correct? Will ask around.
  11. STILL having cold start issues....fuel pump?

When you put the key in to start do you immediately turn to crank? The fuel pump should prime the system, then hold pressure until you start the engine. Try turning the key to on and waiting a couple seconds to listen for the pump priming. The hissing might be an injector slowly leaking fuel...
  12. transmission wont go into gear

You could double check the shift linkages first, make sure they're not twisted and are on the correct arms. Long shot, but it wouldn't be the first time they were the problem. The RPM drop seems to indicate clutch drag with the clutch in. That would explain the slight drop in RPMs and also why...
  13. [RESOLVED] Timingbelt Falling Apart [Merged 8-8] groove cut short bolt bolts

It's possible to take off the oil pan with the engine in, but it takes a bit of work. The downpipe needs to come off, but it might be easier to take the whole exhaust off. Transfer case also needs to come out, but the driveshaft can stay in. I think the Haynes manual says the intermediate shaft...
  14. Plugged cat?

Blowing off the UICP piping wouldn't really point to a plugged cat. If that is the only symptom pointing to a plugged cat I'd carefully check the clamps and hoses to the IC before moving on.A plugged converter will cause the car to die or at least be really sluggish whether or not you're...
  15. oil return line?

The turbo oil return should be flexible enough to handle shifts like that, so I'd guess that's not the problem. Did you take the studs out or just take off the nuts? As for not getting the last nut back on, were the other nuts all tightened down when you tried to get the last one on? You should...
  16. Check out these spiders!

MMMMmmmm....the spider that eats like a meal.Wasn't there a thread with wolf spiders awhile back? Sucker was hiding behind one of those wall clocks, but it's legs still stuck out? That thing gave me the heebie jeebies for weeks.
  17. 0 compression in one cylinder!!!

Before you tear it down I'd do a wet test. Pour about 1 tablespoon of engine oil down the spark plug hole of the low cylinder, wait a minute or two, then retry the compression test. Dramatic improvements will show worn rings as the problem.
  18. 6 dsm's in the $2004 challenge

Every once in awhile I pick up the GRM magazine, they have good information in there, but it's spread out to cover so many types of cars that no one type of car really gets good coverage. Still a good read though. Amazing to see some of the cars people scrounge up for dirt cheap, like that...
  19. Chassis design books

greyforestgst- we'll keep bike shocks in mind. To tell you the truth we've been looking into using QA1 internally-adjustable shocks, we had some in to play around with and they can be rebuilt or revalved in less than an hour, plus they're pretty inexpensive for performance shocks.
  20. 50/50 weight distribution?[no]

To be perfectly honest, FWD front-engine vehicles are packaged that way for cost-saving reasons more than anything else. Same idea with most strut suspensions. There are some positives (like increased traction in wet or icy weather) from having the engine over the drive wheels, but they mostly...
  21. They've got a pepper bar

First time I saw it all I could say was "what the hell?!?"Second time, hmmm...that's pretty funny. Now I occasionally laugh out loud. Not falling off the sofa laugh mind you, but it's still better than the commercial where that guy is suckling off the wolf. Yeah, definately better than that.
  22. Chassis design books

Thanks for the suggestions Defiant.Actually, we were aiming for 1300 lbs sans body with about 250 BHP. Believe that's 5.2 lb/BHP compared to stock's 16 something. 1200 is probably possible, but 1300 seemed sensible.I'll look into those 4 books you mentioned. I picked up Engineer to Win...
  23. We were mentioned in Modified Mag...

I believe turbo magazine mentioned tuners in passing awhile back. They had a bunch of stuff on the 4G63 that was fairly good.
  24. Chassis design books

Good day eh, I'm going to start senior year in Auto Engineering Tech, and we're planning on submitting a proposal for a tube-framed chassis using a FWD turbo 1G donor. If anybody follows kit-cars it would be similar to the EuroWorks Attack car (i.e. mid-engine RWD).Anybody have suggestions...
  25. Jailbait or legal?

Howzabout you just PM me the pic, preferably at 1024x768 so I can make it my desktop background.<shudder>
  26. Jailbait or legal?

12/16And I have to mention that anytime DevilSperm starts a thread trepidation fills my heart. I'm still scarred from that hairy beast-woman pic you posted on the infamous cheesecake thread.
  27. car math calculations?

How about:HP=(P*L*A*N)/33,000HP=horsepower P=average pressure in cylinder (psi) L=stroke in feet A=total area of pistons (in^2) N=number of powerstrokes per minute (rpm/2 for 4-stroke)
  28. someone messed up paint

 maybe it's just a horny smurf.
  29. What's your favorite Nintendo game of all time?

First of all, Mario 3, Contra, and RC Pro-Am are my favorites.Has anybody else on here used emulators? I got one for NES (Nesticle) and Sega Genesis (forget the name) and they rock. Roms are tiny downloads, and most emulators will let you save a game anywhere. Only downfall is you can't use...
  30. Is my TPS bad???

I believe the 2G TPS incorporates the idle switch into the TPS, while it's a separate sensor on the 1G TB. So, I believe a 1G with a 2G TPS just won't connect to the idle switch wire at the harness, and a 2G with a 1G TPS will never tell the ECU that it's at idle, but the ECU probably knows from...
  31. Rebuilding shortblock

I've heard change the oil before 500 miles after a rebuild, then after that use synthetics. Also avoid cruising at one RPM for extended periods of time, it can build a lip in the cylinder bores that catches the piston rings. That's about all I can think of for a shortblock, I believe the 3 big...
  32. Hub castle nut and speed bleeder Qs

Alright, got the new driveaxle in, everything went alright except I had to cut out off the sway bar link (don't ask), and I'll need to pop the control arm off again soon since the bottom boot is starting to split. And I peened over some threads on the ball joint. Okay, it was ugly.On the...
  33. Hub castle nut and speed bleeder Qs

Sorry, should have specified he was right about the size. You were right about getting new nuts. To replace my old tired seized up ones.
  34. Hub castle nut and speed bleeder Qs

Picked up the new axle, it came with a new 32 MM nut so chaye was right on.My Haynes manual makes it sound like I won't be able to separate the drive axle from the intermediate shaft. Can somebody tell me what it takes? From the picture I don't see a way to lock together unless that circlip...
  35. Hub castle nut and speed bleeder Qs

Thanks for the input guys, I'll grap a 32 when I'm in.I was originally going to tear apart the front axles, do CV boots, rotors, rebuilt calipers, and probably bearings all in one fell swoop. Now it's a "boot just ripped and need to get car back on the road before thursday and bloody hell...
  36. intake for a 1g awd

I don't have any help on the MAS issue, but I can help a bit with the exhaust. The O2 sensor housing is the small elbow that joins the turbo to the downpipe. If you try to look at it with the hood up it'll be mostly covered by heat shields, but follow the O2 sensor wire in and you'll see it...
  37. Hub castle nut and speed bleeder Qs

2 quick questions:What size are the front drive axle castle nuts? I hate it when I can't even start a project before I need a new tool.Secondly, are these bleeders the same as Russell bleeders?http://www.speedbleeder.com/Everybody I've talked to that has used them say they're...
  38. Idle Problem and out of town... YIKES!

This is a long shot, but my old Audi would die whenever it came off high idle. Turns out a hose had cracked and made a fairly large air leak. Remember, long shot.
  39. Turbo died in my stock 1992 talon

First of all, you're sure it's the turbo that's shot? Secondly, if you have it out what went wrong with it? Some problems are more salveagable than others, so it might not be a complete write-off.You can probably find a 14b in good shape for less than $325 around here or on the trader. If...
  40. What's a good beginner sports bike? [Merged 12-7]

Honestly I'd get a first bike without much fiberglass bodycladding. Yeah, it looks cool, but when you lay it down (not guaranteed, but probably better than 50/50 odds) you don't want to dump hundreds of bucks into glass pieces instead of premium gas. While I'm being a complete wet blanket I'd...
  41. 2005 Supra...

Can't say that it does much for me. Can't say the previous generation did either. Maybe I'm just spoil sport.
  42. good-bye to the dsm

First of all, he said MR2 plus cash. ATD.I've only driven a NT 2G MR2, but even that had decent pickup and about the best handling on a street car that I've ever driven. Turbo with suspension upgrades has to be really sweet. Good luck with it.
  43. Todd Day and DSM.org?

I'm glad that the digest has been archived, but it really isn't as convenient as these forums. At any rate, big kudos to Todd for getting the DSMs on the net rolling. As for missing out on the DSM heyday, I think we're in the real good time to wrench DSMs. Every day there's another 7 or 8...
  44. Obdii?

I could be wrong, but I believe OBD 2 was required on most 96 cars, but the standards were finalized by 1994. Therefore some manufacturers decided to implement it on new models before they really had to, especially with new models in 94 and 95.
  45. TPS questions. Please Help

Steve- thanks for double-checking the wire list.First I'd check that the TPS is firmly tightened and the connector hasn't come loose. If you can get access to an OBD2 scanner I'd check out the TPS readings as you slowly depress and release the throttle (key on, engine off). If there is a...
  46. Tiny Bubbles on Dipstick...

At least you got it figured out. As a quick heads up, it's a good idea to always refill the oil according to the dipstick, not the amount recommended in the manual. Most of the time following the book will work, but every once in awhile it will be quite a bit off.
  47. Tiny Bubbles on Dipstick...

Easiest advice first: do you have the right level of oil in the engine? If its too high the crank can whip the oil up and form bubbles.Secondly, do the bubbles remain if you check the oil a couple minutes after turning the engine off? When was the last time you changed the oil filter? If the...
  48. TPS questions. Please Help

I'm not dead certain on 2G cars, but usually there are 3 wires to a TPS, a 5 volt reference, ground, and signal voltage. Reference should be hot with key on run, ground should have continuity to the neg. post or to the frame, and signal will probably head straight back to the ECU connector. I'd...
  49. automotive engineer

Ideally an automotive engineer would have a good understanding of both pure engineering (i.e. mechanical or electrical) and automotive mechanics. Doesn't always work that way. There are a few schools that have automotive engineering programs that could probably teach you everything you need...
  50. what does tsi, dl , esi, gs, gst, and gsx stand for?

Yes, there are Vision TSi cars, so I wouldn't go along with Turbo. Often small "i" stands for injected though, so that might be right. Kinda obvious, I don't think any manufacturer has sold a carbed car in the US since the mid 80s.
