    1g crankshaft position sensor code

Thanks For the info. I'll go ahead and start with replacing the plugs, wires, and O2 sensor. I guess worst case, I'll have to replace the CPS. Thanks again.

    1g crankshaft position sensor code

Hey guys, did some searching, but couldn't find anything on my problem. Just started driving my 1G again after about a year of it being parked. It still starts right up and runs fine. However, I failed the idle emissions test horribly and that has never happened before. Went home, checked CEL...

    Turbocharger part number help

Well, that said, how does it compare to the evo III. What are the main differences, and what is it really worth? Does it have the same performance specs as the Mitsu Evo III? This is stuff that I'm trying to find out.

    Turbocharger part number help

So I bought a new turbo on ebay a while ago, and I'm having trouble deciphering what turbo it actually is. The listing said that it was a big 16g. It also said that it was an evo III 16g. I've done a lot of searching on google, and haven't had much luck with anything. What I really need is...

    Drivetrain is royally messed up!

There was still fluid in the tranny when I took it apart. I think it was all that time of me raping the motor and all wheel drive launches with my spec clutch. I've been upgrading a lot on my car lately and haven't touched the drivetrain. Luckily, the transfer case is fine. I'm thinking that...

    Drivetrain is royally messed up!

So I'm driving down the highway the other day in cruise control when my tranny decides to take a crap on itself. I hear a slight pop, then notice my car decelerate for a brief moment, then try and re-establish its speed through the cruise control. I pulled over the car to check under the hood...

    Slave cylinder rod length?

I know this is an old thread but, if the Taboo ext rod is 1/4"(.25) longer than stock, one of you has the wrong length... 3.75" - 1/4" = 3.5" not 3.35... Any thoughts? I'm also battleing disengagement problems as well and I'm little confused about the actuall rod lengths...

Anyone have any experience with these springs?

So the Tein's and the AGX's are all installed and working great. I love the ride from these springs. Plus they seem to handle really well. The only problem that I'm having is my front mounts making noise. After installation, the shocks/springs will make noise every time I turn the wheel...

missing parts on 1g aftermarket rear suspension?

So I just got finished doing my rear suspension on my 1g. I have Tein lowering springs, and KYB AGX shocks. Problem is, I think I'm assembling the spring/strut wrong. When the car is all put together, there is a lot of movement in the shock assembly, as if I'm missing a spacer, or have just...

    pop-up headlight won't stay up

Does anybody have any suggestions on this? I'm really stumped for a solution. I hate coming out after work and having to manually pull my headlight back up to position. There's gotta be some kind of repair kit out there for us.........................

    Battery getting overcharged!

it really just depends on the car. A lot of older cars used to have the voltage regulators inline with the system, separate from the alternator. It was a little black box. Like robs90tsi stated, the turbo cars have them with the alternator, while the N/T cars are not.
  17. sumenlo

    Battery getting overcharged!

So got the alternator out and took it up to the local checker. The test showed that it was bad. Got a new one and now I'm good to go. Turns out that I had leaked some power steering fluid onto the alternator housing and it effed up the voltage regulator. As far as the battery is concerned...

    pop-up headlight won't stay up

So back in the day, I did the half-ass sleepy eye mod on my 1g. They've been sitting at halfway up for about a year now. My buddy accidentally leaned on one of the headlights a couple weeks ago, and now I can't get it to stay in any sort of up position at all. If I use the manual knob, it...

    Battery getting overcharged!

I actually have a lifetime warranty on my alternator, so that will be an easy fix. The only other question I have, is whether my battery will be okay after this? Is it ruined or can I still use it? I guess I can always use my wal-mart warranty on it and get it replaced for free =)
  20. sumenlo

    Battery getting overcharged!

So this started yesterday, to my knowledge. Basically, I tested the system while the car was running, and the battery was being charged at 20 volts! Obviously that's way above the 14 that it's supposed to be at. My question is this: Since the problem is most likely with the voltage...

    Turbo Conversion Worth it?

Honestly, stay away from the conversion. It's gonna cost you way more money, time and hassle rather than starting with a turbo car. Sell you car and buy an already turboed dsm. It's easy to find 1g's for a decent price. There's my opinion.

    Spec stage 3 clutch

thanks for the input, but that doesn't really help me at all. I know that clutches need a certain amount of milage of break-in, but what is the process? What do you do to the clutch in the first thousand miles of break-in? do you slip it bad the first few times on purpose because it's a...

    Spec stage 3 clutch

So I'm bringing this thread back to life because one of the questions asked here was never answered. I'm installing my stage 3 today and I'm not sure at all what the break in period is, or what it entails. I've heard a couple different theories on breaking in a pucked clutch versus a full face...

    wow! extreme oil leak!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet on here is your crankcase ventilation tube. The little hose that runs from your crankcase to the intake to ventilate pressure could possibly be the cause. Take the hose off and see if it's clogged. Then take your valve cover off and inspect the port...

Anyone have any experience with these springs?

So it appears that there's not much experience with these particular springs on 1g's. I went ahead and ordered the Tein's this morning for my car. I will be coupling them with the AGX's in a couple of weeks when the funds arrive. I'll be sure to post my results and let everyone know how they...

    Kyb Gr2

In what way? Do you have any proof of this? My buddy has a 95 TSI with AGX's and they haven't given him any problems at all. And, if I'm not mistaken, most of the 2g guys on the boards here are using AGX's. That's what i've come across while reading most of the strut question threads.
  28. sumenlo

    Kyb Gr2

Like was stated earlier, the GR2 is basically a stock replacement. They are only 10% stiffer than stock. On top of that, they cost the same as the stock monroe's at your local auto zone. Not worth it in my opinion. Just drop the extra couple hundred and go for the AGX's.

Auto to Manual, is it worth it?

In my opinion, manual is the way to go, no matter what. It's just way too much fun to do the shifting yourself. I feel like I'm more a part of the car when I'm driving a stick. The other thing I like, is the skill involved in being good at driving a manual. Any Joe Schmo can mash his foot...

    Many problems w/my 1G :(

What is the life on your current turbo? Your boosting problems might be related to that. Take the intake pipe off the turbo and reach your fingers inside. See if there's any movement side to side on your turbo. Could be going bad, which is why it won't build any boost. Your oil leak might...

    running HOT!!

Your car will obviously run hot due to the turbo, so the dipstick being hot to the touch is normal. I've burned myself a few times on that guy. Usually just use a rag or something to pull it out. As far as the fans, I'm with the other guy. If your heat shield is off, you'll definetly be...

Speedo not correct, out of ideas :(

Ya, you gotta be careful when installing those overlay white face gauges. If you bump the needles wrong, they'll never read right again. The springs are really sensitive and fragile.

    boost stutter?

Does it feel like the car just cuts out for a second? Kind of like it's missing? If so, check your plugs and wires like stated earlier. Then double check your timing and make sure it's not off. My opionion is that it is ignition related, though.

    1G Main headliner backing question

Ya, pretty much trying to salvage the old one is out of the question. I think it was shredded into about 17 different size pieces. Pretty funny actually. I always figured i'd try to find one at a junkyard, but 1g's aren't that common out here in Tucson. At least in the junkyards anyway. I...

    Radio face plates?

You can buy a replacement faceplate for any stereo. You have 2 options. First, go to the manufacturers website and they'll usually have a section for OEM replacement parts. A replacement face from the manufacturer will run you about $50 or $60. Or you can check on ebay as stated earlier...

    1G Main headliner backing question

So I took my old headliner out a while back becuause it was completely falling apart. My plan was to eventually get it re-covered with some better fabric. Well, months upon months of the headliner sitting behind my couch, my cats wound up wrecking it into about 30 different size pieces. Where...

Need help with my OIL LEAK!!!

A quick, easy fix to the oil cap leaking, is to double up the cap gasket. Go to the dealer and drop $5 on another oil cap gasket. Place it on top of the old gasket to double it up. Your cap will be much harder to screw on, but it will stop any leaking coming from there. Also, check your...

esi turbo kit vs. tsi FWD

The Esi 420a powerplant is not that good of a platform for a turbo kit. Especially since the car is not running and nobody knows why, you might wind up spending a lot of money to get that sucker running. Find a decent price for a TSI or GSX. It's a much better starting platform for...

    First Mods

No matter which way you look at it, the N/T intake and piping are completely different from the Turbo setup. Are you talking about slapping a turbo on your 420A, or are you doing a 4G63 swap? Both are, again, completely different. Make sure you do a lot of research before you make any kind of...

Rebuild engine or put mods on??

Just be on the safe side and rebuild it. That way you can do what you want to the motor while it's all in pieces. Not to mention you'll get much more life out of it. If you put your money into mods, you'll eventually wind up blowing the motor because of the mileage. 105k is a lot of miles...
