If it is on the inside of the top timing belt cover it is very likely engine oil getting past a can seal. That is my best guess. If it is on the outside it is likely power steering fluid if you still have power steering.
That is 100% not the cause of your overheating.Common reasons for DSMs to overheat:
Bad radiator cap
Bad thermostat
Clogged radiator
Fans not working properly or not kicking on
Water pump failing
Low on coolant or huge air bubble
Fmic blocking air flow to radiator
Blown head gasket
Heater core...

If you have a 91 coil pack and power transistor you will have to rewire the '90 harness to mimic the '91 plus style. Search for converting a '90 tach setup to a '91 plus style ignition. I have done it and it wasn't very hard. If I had more time I would search for the link.
Sorry if my reply or post doesn't make sense as I have been up all night. Make sure you are getting power at the gauge. Also make sure you have a solid ground. If you have done this already I apologize. Also, make sure your power source doesn't have a bad fuse and that your wiring doesn't have...
With the ball joint press flipped upside down I did not use any inserts on the one side of the large c-clamp piece. It actually fit the bottom of the ball joint quite well.
I just replaced my front ball joints the other day. Rent a balljoint press from Autozone, O'reilly or some other parts store. I flipped the tool upside down with the threaded part at the top then used one of the round hollow pieces and two disc pieces at one end. I wish I would have taken a...
I would start by replacing your thermostat first. It is cheap and easy. I once had a 170 deg. thermostat and during a cold winter I would freeze. Next I would try a coolant flush. You may also be low on coolant.
I have a '90 and got sick of finding and replacing the noise filters that are located on the intake manifold below the coil. I ended up swapping to a '91 plus style and had to alter some wiring as well as change the gauge cluster, coil, & power transistor.
You could have a bad coolant temp sensor or a poor connection. Do you have anything to log this with? Have you had the CAS off recently? Is it 180 deg. off?
New time of 12.2 @ 123 w/ a crappy 2.1 60'. I'm still running an ACT 2100 w/ a sprung 6-puck ceramic disc that slips badly if I launch the car hard. I'm still on the stock never rebuilt bottom end from '90 and the turbo is a bolt-on hx40 pro. Remember that Utah is at a high elevation and cars...
I ended up having to dent my water pipe just a little. I didn't realize I had to until I was tightening everything up. I was able to end up keeping the stock passenger fan, but I had to grind away a bunch of it.I ended up grinding down even more than what is shown in this picture. Sorry for...

On the thread "Holset turbo's pt 8," pg 15 there are some pics posted by a member named Calan which is the best setup I have seen. I spent the money on adapters & -12 an fittings and if I did it again I would mimic what Calan did. It appears he purchased flanges & welded tubing onto them. My...
Calan, I really like your setup. I wish I would have seen yours before I did mine. Yours looks much more simple and like it would flow much better. I've spent too much money on my -12 return setup that I had to chop to pieces in order to fit w/ the 2g manifold. For the record w/ my bolt-on...
Here is a pic of my bolt-on hx40 in the .55 Mitsu housing w/ a 2g manifold on a 1g. I didn't have to dent my water pipe, just grind away a little above where I blocked it off with a bolt. I of course had to grind away a lot at my motor mount too. I'm not using any spacers and I'm running a...
I'm currently setting up a bolt-on hx40 on my 1g. I was able to get the stock 1g passenger side fan to stay in with a 2g manifold, but I had to hack the crap out of my fan. I had to remove the complete lower driver's side support for the fan and hack away a little bit off some blades. I have...
If I have the .55 ar bolt on housing on an hx40 pro am I going to need to port out the wastegate hole in order to run low boost? I'm running a Tial 38 off the o2 housing. Thanks in advance.
My hx40 showed up today. Now I just need to figure out how I am going to run the oiling setup. Also, what should I do with the lip on the compressor outlet? Do you grind it off or find an adapter? Thanks.
If anyone is wondering you can order the hx40 new in the bolt on housing from three different places right now.Pure-tuning sells the hx40 pro 6 blade in the bolt-on housing for $1200 shipped.
If you call Bullseyepower.com they will also sell you the same hx40 pro in the bolt on housing for...
Does anyone have any current pricing or availability on a new hx40 in the bolt on housing?I e-mailed pure-tuning.com and nobody has got back in touch with me. I haven't been able to get a hold of Tim's turbos quite yet, plus on one page it says the price is $1k and on another page it says...
Just for the record, I broke a gear in the pump on the transmission. It split into three pieces. I've learned from others to never "suck" an auto trans onto the engine block by tightening the bolts.
The first time the trans was installed the torque convertor probably wasn't in all of the way. I just got off the phone with two transmission shops and it appears I may have broken some gears or something in the transmission pump. IPT trans has excellent customer service.
I just swapped a transmission out of a 91 FWD auto into a 91 FWD auto. The old trans had the code f4a33k1up61 then al1427 below it. The new trans had the same f4a33k1up61 but then below was different with a af0274. While the tranny was off I had the torque converter rebuilt at a local shop...
Littlebeeper is probably right on the money. I have seen used car dealerships time and time again pull the thermostat out if the car is having issues with overheating. You may have a clogged heater core or radiator. Let us know if flushing everything helped.
Many people run prothane motor mounts and do not have knock issues. I think you are looking at phantom knock issues. Also, I wouldn't knock on people who are trying to give you advice, especially when they are giving you good advice.
I noticed nobody has posted so I will throw out some ideas. I doubt they are the causes of your problems, but at least they are some ideas. If you had powersteering and then lost it, I would check to make sure the crank pulley has not come apart.Did you have a stock clutch or a 2100lb...
If this just seemed to happen out of nowhere there is always the slight possiblity that your timing belt jumped a tooth. If all else fails make sure that all of your timing marks align up properly. I had a friend who wouldn't be on the throttle very much and his EGT's would climb like crazy...
I have just skimmed through this thread, so if someone else has answered your question disregard my answer. To answer your question, No, it is not just a drop in thing, but once certain work has been performed it will be from that point on.If you have an eprom ecu, there is a chip that is...
I have waited for dsmlink to come out for the 1g's since it came out for the 2g's, but have never been aware of a list since the website does not mention anything about one.If someone can, please e-mail me the order form if possible at [email protected] , if I have to continue to wait...
15 psi is a good estimate, but that number isn't always true. If you have a bad boost leak you may hit fuel cut much sooner. The only thing that causes fuel cut is when the computer sees x amount of airflow, then BOOM it shuts things off because it thinks it is going to hurt itself. If you...
I was able to tune my car for about 4 counts w/ an SAFC and racefuel. If I knew how to upload the logs I would show you. I think I am going to try and figure this stuff out tonight or tomorrow.
I had a chance to look at the MMCD this last weekend at the track. It looks more like dsmlink than pocketlogger since it has the little up and down line scroller thingey. Anway I like pocketlogger because I am familiar w/ it. I am sure MMCD would work great too.
Up near the battery there is a little harness that I believe is pink. You need to ground that out to the frame someplace using alligator clips or something. Then where the timing belt is you look further down to where the harmonic balancer is. This is the area where you will want to flash the...
Since the throttle is reading 100% on the safc that is definately messing things up, even if you didn't have an safc. You need to get the car set correctly so you are seeing 0% throttle at 0% throttle.
I am not 100% sure, but I would run your timing at 5 deg advance like on a turbo car. If you are experiencing a lot of knock, lower your timing advance even more.
