Here's a new one to me...the Archer Bros evidently raced Jeeps back in the late 80's. There's one on ebay right now...check it out!Archer Brothers Championship Jeep
Phil, I sent my friend an email (it's getting a bit late to call) asking for the car # and any info/pics he can share.Chris, I'd love to see the photo. BTW, when I lived in Tucson back in the late 90's I used to see an Eagle on the street sporting the yellow/black liver. A "tribute car", if...
Okay, I just spoke to my friend who is their team manager. He said that they bought the car directly from the Archer Bros still in the yellow & black eagle silhouette livery. They then converted the trim pieces to Eclipse and repainted the car. After the race the car was sold to someone in Latin...
Ah, good stuff...thanks! I've met Troy Fliss a couple of times and we have a good friend in common, so I will make it a point to ask about the cars. Thanks again, Stan
Go to SearchTempest, enter your postal/zip code and copy/pasta the following string into the "What:" box:(1989|1990|1991|1992|1993|1994|89|90|91|92|93|94) (Talon|Eclipse|Laser)Check the "within xx miles" box (select your distance), Canada and/or Mexico boxes as appropriate, the sales and...
This has got to be one of the longest running threads ever... :thumb:My first encounter with an Archer Bros Eagle Talon was at the 1995 Dallas Grand Prix, where I saw their stable of '95 AWD cars in the iconic Eagle livery. Anybody know what ever happened to these cars? Are they the ones...
Yes...thanks. I got that from reading all the NT 4g63 threads I could find. What I am looking for are (preferably forged) pistons to bring the engine to just below 10:1 if they are out there, and regular racing cams designed for normally aspirated engines. My goal is to get close to 250 hp with...
I road race a C-Sports Racer in SCCA, and recently they opened the class up to under-10:1 2 liter engines. I am thinking of replacing the 4age that's in my car now with a NT 4g63, so am looking for sources for racing cams and pistons. Anybody have any suggestions? TIA!
Archer Bros rally car for sale in San Francisco...just $8500. :)craigslist online communityI am posting it here so I am not tempted to buy it... :cry:Should be an easy convert to SCCA or NASA road racer.StanPS - I am not connected in any way to this sale...just saw it on Craigslist.
Hope you don't mind me piggybacking with some related questions... :)I have a '93 with a 1g 7-bolt engine which my son ran low on oil. I pulled the engine and the #2 and #3 rods got hot and have bearing damage. I can see where the crank got hot, and it has bearing residue, though it appears...
Thanks Steve! I have found out that they will be permitting alternate pistons and rods. However, stroking or swapping turbos to corporate engines that never came with them is not permitted. For instance, I can run a 4g63 with any turbo that came on that engine, or I can run a 4g64, but not swap...
Pneumo, as long as I can prove that the engine/turbo/intake combo came on some corporate car, I should be good. After all, corporate engine swaps (as an "assembly") are permitted.
Okay, I've gotten some updates to the rules from my contacts at SCCA, and here are some changes and clarifications to what I listed above:Aftermarket rods and pistons will be legal.
The porting rule is 1" in from the valve seat, so I can port the pocket, including the valve guide.
Stock intake...
The restrictor must be upstream of the compressor section, and upstream of the "recirculation valve" (BOV tube). And yes, one may use a venturi-type restrictor. Stan
Come to think of it, I can just swap in an entire Evo motor, since corporate engine swaps are legal. I need to do some research to see if there is a 2.3l version; if it will bolt up to my tranny (or if I need a new tranny), etc. Thanks for planting that seed! :D
Thanks Kyle! I think removing the balance shaft is not legal, since the rule reads "Unless a particular modification, or part, is approved in these rules, the vehicle and all of its relevant parts and assemblies shall be stock for the correct make and model of car."Same with the 7cm housing...
I'm posting this thread here to get feedback from road racers, rather than in the general engine area. If that is a no-no, Chris, please feel free to move it. :thumb:I started converting my car for road racing a couple of years ago, but stopped to race another car and because my...
Eddie, I posted some comments about B& D Prepared in this thread (post #30), as well as links to the SCCA rules.I will also be starting a thread in this sub-forum about building up a restricted motor. If you plan to race SCCA in future you will want to follow that thread for sure.Stay in...
Good luck and have fun!BTW, turbo DSMs are now legal in SCCA's B & D Prepared road racing classes, so if your plan is to do road racing you now have a place in SCCA to do it.Stan
AFAIK Solo2 cars do not require lob books, but the tech folks there can put you in touch with the nearest Club Racing Region, who will definitely have them (and can perform the inspection to issue one).Stan
I hope you can quickly resolve the issues dragging you away from racing, Greg. Dang, too bad this had to happen just when I have finally arranged matters to convert my '93 Talon to road race trim, and was looking forward to joining you on track.Oh well, B and D Prepared will be waiting for you...
TheCrazyDSM'r,SCCA just created two new National classes (effective 1/1/07) where you can road race your DSM...B and D Prepared. The two classes are modeled after (and the rules are based on) the World Challenge GT and Touring classes, with power capped at 450 and 250 hp, respectively. You...
I can't speak for all sanctioning bodies, but for road racing with SCCA the log book is issued after a thorough inspection of the car's technical and safety features by an SCCA-licensed technical inspector. The log book is then collected at each race, and any required repairs are noted before...
Yeah, you couldn't very well have taken your own photo, eh? D'uh! :sneaky:Your comments about RWD cars having a difficult time are the same as I've seen repeatedly during the 25 Hours. The high powered RWD cars have to tip-toe around to avoid ending up in the wall or axle-deep in the...
Congrats on getting to the track, Chris. I was particularly interested to read of your AWD experiences in the rain. As I inch towards getting my Talon track ready, I keep questioning if I need to switch to an AWD car, since my ultimate goal is to run the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, held here in...
Nascar is so sissified these days. I remember when Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison got into a fist fight in the infield after they crashed each other out while leading with a lap or two to go at Daytona. It was all over TV with everyone thinking it was just a a couple of 'good ol boys'...
It's not a silly thing (or question) at all. The drain-back holes on this engine's head are sealed to prevent oil falling down onto the crankchaft, so I must use a scavenge line to recycle the oil out of the head. :)
The general consensus in road racing is that one needs 10 psi of HOT oil pressure per 1000 RPMs. In your case that means 70 psi at 7000 RPMs with the oil hot. Mike's planned 80 psi sounds fine to me, but the 120 you're seeing now is way too high. Aside from blowing filter seals it is sapping...
Yes, these are the ultimate answer, whether with stock tanks or fuel cells. I have similar (though aluminum) setups in both of my road racing cars. They will suck virtually all the fuel out of the tank. In one car we pumped out all the fuel to send the bag off for repair. When we removed the bag...
Way cool, Greg! :thumb:BTW, how is your gearbox rebuild coming along, and when and where are you racing next? I'm working feverishly with my son on his new DSR body to take to the SCCA Runoffs. Not DSM, but hey, it's racing! :DRegards,
You could be right about Otay, Greg. I thought my friend said that it was going to be a full service motorsports park eventually, but I could be confusing it with somewhere else. But you are definitely right about me being spoilt living in the center of plenty! :DWithin an hour's driver...
Having spent 4 years on the shortgrass prairies of the Midwest courtesy of Uncle Sam, I will take California any day...! :)Don't get me wrong. Great people and absolutely mad racing, but the weather just killed me. As I wrote (yes, this was pre-internet) to my brother after the first...
I mentioned earlier that we contested the San Jose Grand Prix with 'mixed results'. Well, here's how our day actually ended... :cry:About half way through the second lap, our driver came 'round a blind 90-degree corner (are there any other kinds?) and met up with 3 stopped cars. WTF...
D'oh! Sorry I missed you, Chris! :cry:Unfortunately we will not be at Denver. We were going to make Denver the next stop on our season, but the team owner bought a brand new Swift 014a, which he wants to get ready for Road America and Montreal, so he decided to skip the mean streets of...
The San Jose Grand Prix being a Champcar event, naturally we had to have an umbrella girl to keep the fierce sun off our driver... :thumb:So naturally, our crew chief and resident bon vivant Dave Rich had to ham it up with her. Cute little number... :sneaky:
Yes, the track was a real challenge due to sections being very narrow and having to cross the light-rail tracks twice on each circuit. One of our crew members took this photo of another Atlantic getting air under the fronts while simultaneously dragging the stainless skid plate and sparking like...
Okay, it's not directly related to DSM...but I am rebuilding my '93 Talon TSi into a road racer so maybe the mods won't delete the thread. If it crosses the line, feel free though. I don't want anyone's tail getting into a knot... :DAnyway, as some of you know, in my day job I am team...
I think that before I went to the trouble and expense of aftermarket hubs that I would ensure that what I have is up to spec, especially in light of Greg's success running the stock setup. He is making similar power to you and has no knockback with the stock hubs, so I suggest sending him a PM...
Rich,My experience has been that bad boosters give very hard pedal, not an initially soft one. That's because the booster is designed to reduce the effort required to get full braking. When it goes bad it is no longer helping you so the pedal seems very firm from the outset.OTOH...
I had completed the installation of a Phantom LSD and a 8% taller 5th gear, and was moving my transmission into place to mount it to the engine when I noticed a bearing race shim lying under the table. Oops! :cry:I have no idea which race it came from, as I removed each race and shim stack...
A little mild engine braking isn't going to hurt your engine or trans much, but this statement illustrates a common misconception:
Engine braking is properly used only in race cars that have sequential transmissions. Due to the design of the gearbox, the driver MUST use each gear going up or...
I still do some racing with SCCA, but my main focus is on Champcar's Toyota-Atlantic series, where I am team engineer for Ishikawa Racing. If you (or other readers) are up in the Bay Area for the San Jose Grand Prix in two weeks, stop by the Atlantic paddock and say hi! :)I have seen other...
Awesome job at Buttonwillow, Greg...and sorry to hear about your gearbox at Willow Springs!
Can you really get your car up to that speed in Talladega, especially coming from Magic Mt? My Formula Atlantic holds the SCCA qualifying record for course #13 at a 1:37.7, but the car was hitting...
