Alright, the check engine light has finally went off, and it's running fine, so thanks for the help eveyone, I know I saved some money by not taking it in,
thanks
Heff
Ok I followed the code diagnosis link, but any time the key is on, but the car isn't actually running, the cel turns off and stays off. It only comes on when the car is running, so what does that mean? I checked the plugs and two of them need replaced, so maybe thats it, but as of today it's at...
alright, I pulled the plug wires and found a good amount of water in the boots and chambers of two of the cylinders, so i blew them out and let them dry , and it ran good for a day, but the check engine light still was on. However this morning it started running like crap again, so I'll check...
well, I let it idle in the driveway for a while and revved it up and it ran fine until I drove it, and as soon as I drove it it started misfiring again, and when it sputtered, the cel also rapidly blinked, so I'll wait another day and hope it gets better, thanks for the help so far, I'll let...
I went and removed the negative batt cable to reset the ecu, but after starting it up again, the cel was still on and it still sputtered when I gave it some gas, but the idle is fine, I didn't drive it, but I'll let it sit and try it again tommorow, hopefully it will dry out. I looked and the...
Hey guys I changed my oil on my 99 gs last night, and after spilling a little oil when refilling it, I rinsed the engine off with water, then it sat overnight. Today I drove it to town and after about 15 minutes of driving it started running real bad, and misfiring/sputtering all the way home...
Do you have a cat back exhaust or did you just replace the muffler? if you just replaced the muffler, that's probably part of the problem. I have a 2.5 inch custom cat back with a universal apc muffler, and it sounds great, deep, a little loud, but not ricey...
The mods you have listed seem like a good start, however be aware that alot of the bolt on mods you might be getting now, like header, exhaust, intake, will need to be replaced when you go turbo, so depending on how long that will be, you may want to hold off, or work on other things. Just...
Hey guys, I'm looking to get a front and maybe a rear strut tower brace, I have narrowed it down to 3 , HP racing, ractive, or vracing/konig. I can get them all for around $40 from nopi, and they all look good which is half the reason I'm getting one, my question is fitment. I have read some...
I guess I don't understand what he means by 3000gt interchangeable motor parts. since the engine in his eclipse isn't even made by the same company as the 3kgt motor, how would anything be interchangeable?
Heff
I think the gains should be close to the same regardless of your tranny, it's just that with an auto, less of the power that the engine makes gets to the wheels, which with a car that already is low on horsepower is not good news. The harsh truth, is that if you want a "fast" car you either need...
A core is basically the part you are replacing, when you buy a part like a block or a waterpump, or whatever, they charge you a core charge, which is refunded when they receive your old part. To use a waterpump as an example, if you go to autozone and buy a waterpump, it's most likely a rebuilt...
For all of the all motor 420's that have had rebuilds/engine work, what did you have done, how much did it cost , and what kind of performance gains did you get?
thanks,
Heff
The cam gears themselves just bolted on will give you no gain, the benefit is that they are adjustable, so you can change the timing, but the install will cost you alot unless you can do it yourself. There is an excellent article on import tuner magazine's website, where they installed and...
If your parents actually notice, which most wouldn't know the difference, then just tell them it's part of the recomended maintanance of the car, which it is.

yes, and yes . Although it's actually cheaper to make big Hp by going with a turbo kit. go to Hahn racecrafts website to get info on turbo kits, go to howellautomotive to get info on going all motor.Heff
I researched it myself for my car and what I came up with is that if you try and go cheap and take shortcuts, you will have problems, but if you do it correctly, like rebuild the bottom end, and buy a good turbo kit, you should be fine, however to do that it takes about 6-$7000 unless you know...
In my opinion you would be much better with a bottom end kit with higher compression, the heads are pretty good already on the 420's, plus with a new bottom end you are extending the life of your car significantly.
Heff
I would go with the cold air, it definitley gives more performance, and I wouldn't worry about hydrolock, unless you have to drive through a foot or more of standing water where you live, even then the bypass will protect you from that.
Heff
I know that low compression is the way to build when going turbo, but I'm probably not going to do it all at once as i don't want to dump $6000 into this car right now, I'm looking to do things in stages, so if I sell the car I haven't lost too much money. What I wanted to know is that is it...
Hey turbo experts, I have some questions, I have a 98 eclipse GS with 100k on the car, and I need some power, I have ruled out bolt ons, which leaves me with 2 options , motor buildup, and or turbo kit. if i wanted to spend unlimited amounts of money on this car I would do both, but I don't yet...
If you go to the import tuner magazine website, and go to the power pages section, they dyno test a couple of bolt ons on a RS, including the regular AEM CAI, not the V2, but I would imagine the numbers, are probably really close, if you haven't bought the V2 yet I reccomend getting the regular...
I know it's not an exhaust leak because it's a cycling vibration, it comes every 2 seconds or so at the same frequency. I have a manual trans, but with the clutch depressed it's still present. I think I'll take it in and see what the shop says, I just wanted to see if maybe it was a common DSM...
It's not at any certain speed although i don't notice it at really slow speeds. I only feel it/notice it through the steering wheel/pedals. It's hard to describe, I have been around cars my whole life and have never seen anything like this, usually when something goes wrong I at least know...
My gs oil cap recommends 5w-30, from the factory, but at around 100K I switched to 10w because of the increased tolerances, most oil shops will tell you the same, but I would never stray more than 5w away from the factory recommendation.
yes , but it was doing it when the car was completely stock also, plus it isn't affected by engine rpm, it does it at the same frequency when the car is coasting with the clutch in.
Hey guys I have a 98 eclipse gs, and ever since I have had it, it has had this wierd vibraton that comes and goes, currently it's been doing it again for about a day, when I am driving the car, I can feel this slight vibration from the car every 2-3 seconds, it's not frequent/fast enough to be...
Hey guys, have a 98 gs that I am seriously considering turboing in the next 4-6 months, and I have been looking at the hahn stage one and I like what I see so far, especially the fact that you can supposedly run it safely on stock internals. So before put this much money into my car, I would...
You should probably decide and plan out what you want to do with this car in the long run, because all motor cars and turbo cars require different routes/parts. alot of the performance parts you buy now will have to be replaced if you go turbo down the road. If you stay all motor, just start...
Hey guys I have an AEM cold air intake on my 98 GS, and after driving home from work in the rain, I decided to check the air filter element, just for the heck of it, and to my surprise it was dripping wet! At first I was worried because I hadn't installed my bypass valve yet, but then realized...
Hey guys, I just put matrix coilovers on my 98 eclipse gs, and i put it down about 1.5 inches , nothing radical, but it doesn't ride very good, a little bouncy. I assume this is because of the stock struts, what are some good aftermarket struts that aren't too expensive? also, will this help my...
The piping from the cat to the muffler is what I was looking for also. I have seen a crush bent and a mandrel bent pipe and I would much rather have the mandrel bent, but no one around here does mandrel bending, plus I didn't know how many or how severe thebends need to be for my car. If anyone...
Hey guys I'm getting ready to have a custom bent 2.5 inch exhaust with my performance muffler installed on my 98 GS, and initially i was looking for mandrel bent , but as I look aroung no one around here does that, and they all say that It won't make a noticeable difference, plus it's expensive...
Hey guys i just moved to the atlanta area and was wondering if someone from the area could give me some advice on where the good tuner shops, hangouts, races , etc. are. I didn't see anything in the events forums, but I know there has to be some fellow DSM's in the area.
thanks,
Heff
hey guys I have a 98 eclipse gs and when i first got it, one of the foglights didn't work so I bought a new bulb, then checked it before I changed it and it was working, so i left it, and now it's not working again! For it to be working on and off, the bulb and fuse must be ok right? Anybody...
Hey how easy is it to replace the door and rear speakers in a 98 eclipse gs? for the doors it looks like you just take off the screws and the wholepanel comes off. Is it that easy or are there any special tips or tricks that you guys can give me? also are the stock speaker sizes 6.5 in the door...
Hey guys I'm getting ready to buy a high quality performance muffler, and have meineke custom bend pipe from the cat to the muffler. My question is what size pipe diameter is the best? I'm sure either 2.5 or 2.25 will work, but I wonder what the difference in sound will be? I don't want it to be...
Mitzeclipse, I would really appreciate it also if you could post a sound clip, I am looking at getting a greddy evo, but I haven;t heard it yet.
thanks
Rob
OK guys here's my deal, I have a 98 GS with a cold air intake no other mods, and I want an exhaust for performance, sound and looks. My choices that I am considering are either a high quality cat back kit from greddy, thermal, or apexi, or just buying the greddy, thermal or apexi muffler and...
Well I got it installed without the bypass so far and I was thinking the same thing about whether it's necessary and how it might affect the airflow. I'll leave it off for now but I'll probably put it on later for peace of mind. Thanks for the help, next step - exhaust.
Heff
Hey guys i just got my new AEM cold air intake and an air bypass valve, and unfortunately I now have to cut it somewhere and install the air bypass. Where on the intake tube do you put it? I imagine the large size of it will probably limit my options on placement. Also any other tips on...
Well I installed the NGK iridiums and the accel wires, couldn't have been easier. It's hard to say but I think I notice some increased performance specifically throttle response. Definitely worth the money as a good tune up/performance mod.
Rob
Hey guys I just got my 98 gs last week and I'm planning on changing my plugs/wires tommorow, I bought NGK iridium plugs and accel wires. I took one of the boots off today just to check it out and I was surprised to see how recessed the plug was, do I need some special tool or extension to fit...
The proper way to start using synthetic would be to do an oil system flush, at an oil change shop, then use synthetic, however the flush could cause some leaks or make existing ones worse, your best bet is to just start using synthetic blend with no flushing.
