  1. ECMLink with fresh ECU
    Sold

For sale 1g ECMLink with fresh ECU

Selling this brand new ECMLink from 2022-09, along with a MD165531 EEPROM ECU, $550 shippedI first bought the ECMLink package, knowing I had an EEPROM ECU already. When I got around to putting them together in 2022-11, I discovered the caps had done their thing and puked a little around the...

  2. Boost leak test basics

Ok, thanks .... sounds like messing with turning it probably isn't necessary, so I'll just start there.I do plan to do a leakdown test as well, but later.
  3. Boost leak test basics

I am having idle problems so I'm going to do a boost leak test. I read through the guide in the tech section as well as the comments. I still have a couple questions...Am I supposed to hand turn the engine to some point before testing? If so, how do I do that - I have never done it before.
  4. Inherited Ride

Thanks! You want 3M 38808, "Headliner Adhesive" ... pretty easy to get, kinda expensive. The headliner fabric itself which is bonded to the foam already, lots of places sell it and they're all pretty much the same. I forgot who I bought from. Find someone who will send you color samples first...
  5. Inherited Ride

Dove in today and swapped out the ECU for the ECMlink one. Wasn't too bad actually, except the middle connector on the ECU, the locking tab broke, so instead of having a U shaped lock tab to push on, the bottom of the U broke off, so it's the two legs - and that's a pain to try to unlock...
  6. 1G In 2023, which wideband kit should I get?

Crossing my fingers; I'm not far off stock really though so I'm hoping for no issues.
  7. 1G In 2023, which wideband kit should I get?

Alright thanks for the tips; I'll spring for an LC-2. Thanks!
  8. 1G In 2023, which wideband kit should I get?

Any recommendations on brand/model? The ones listed at ECMlink are outdated...
  9. 1G In 2023, which wideband kit should I get?

I have an ECU with ECMlink ready to install, and the olde SuperAFC to remove. I'd like to go ahead and put a wideband sensor into the stock location. Which one should I get in this day and age? I don't need fancy (I looked at PLX DM6 and that seems complicated and overkill), I need simple and...
  10. 1Gb Talon Rust Revival

That wheel well rust and the POR15 .... do you have to eradicate every speck of the existing rust before using it?I'm looking at fixing my 05 Toyota Sequoia which has similar rust on the lower dogleg area which is common for those. Looking at it, I'll have to grind it out and it's kind of a...
  11. Inherited Ride

Finally got the headliner installed. I recovered it over the winter but had been waiting for nice weather to put it in.I always thought the ash grey color that it originally was, was super weird due to everything else being dark gray, so I chose a charcoal headliner. I also had to change the...
  12. 1G Chasing down idle surge

92 Talon Tsi, the car was parked in the garage for 4 years without being run. When I put it away, it did not have an idle surge, and when I got it back out, it did. But, it's changed...At first, it would idle surge while cold, going from 500 to (I forget) over 1000 about once per second. But...
  13. 1G EGR blockoff plate

That's the exact one I have ... and I think I understand now. I made a very poor assumption that gas was flowing from left to right or vice versa. Is it instead traveling in a U through the valve, that is in through one small hole and out the other?
  14. 1G EGR blockoff plate

I'm getting ready to chase down idle surge which cropped up sometime while the car was parked in the garage for 4 years (it didn't have it when parked). I'm thinking it's some vacuum line deteriorated or got nibbled on or something like that. But I'm going to follow Terry's Talon...
  15. Build up as a learning experience?

Holy smokes, what am I getting into. It’s amazing people did all this stuff before there really was much of an Internet in the early 90s.I did see a photo of the crank end showing the 6-bolt pattern and there was a pin sticking out. The guy told me it was off a turbo car too though.I think...
  16. Build up as a learning experience?

What are the differences? Oil squirters it sounds like? Does that mean non turbo blocks lack the channel for them? What other differences?I thought I’d do this as a learning exercise with the future option to put it in the car, which is the original engine with 134k miles. Rather than pulling...
  17. Build up as a learning experience?

Sooooooo….. anybody have something like this they want to get rid of???
  18. Build up as a learning experience?

Thanks, solid advice ... I'll keep my eyes peeled for such. I considered the part about not having all the bits too.
  19. Build up as a learning experience?

Got it, thanks for the insight!Seeing as how I have zero experience at this low level, I'm going to take this particular situation as "terrible idea" for me and toss the overall idea on the backshelf for now.
  20. Build up as a learning experience?

Thanks! Comes with only the block and crank as far as I can tell. Here's the photos posted with it:
  21. Build up as a learning experience?

I found someone nearby me (less than 10 miles) is selling a 6-bolt block and crank for $450. The photos look fine to me, but I don't have experience with engine internals.I'm thinking of picking it up to do a casual engine build as a learning experience. Terrible idea? Caveats? Thanks!

Wanted 1g 92 Talon interior part needed

I managed to bust the panel behind the drivers head while trying to get the headliner out for recovering. I was stupid, in a rush because it is cold and I had something else to get to and wanted to get the headliner out on a “warm” day. Here’s what I need:
  23. 3D print a bracket for the engine compartment maybe?

Thanks for all the tips, I guess based on what equipment I have and skills (zero skills and equipment for 3D printing, zero skills but have a welder) .... I guess I will have to try welding something together. There is a metal supply place in town open to the public, so seems like the path of...
  24. Inherited Ride

I haven't done anything for awhile, been too busy with other things. However, over the winter I'm planning to pull the headliner to redo that, troubleshoot the idle surge so I ordered a EGR blocking plate in case I need it. Also I'm going to pull all the wheels and take them to Detroit Wheel for...
  25. 3D print a bracket for the engine compartment maybe?

I'm trying to figure out how to mount a pair of oil catchcans. I have space over by the battery and fuses. I can fit a sort of T-shaped bracket, there's an empty bolt hole in a couple places. The top bar of the T would need to be angled back about 45 degrees but it seems like if I bolt it down...
  26. Inherited Ride

I have not managed the gumption to look at the TB.But I did start considering where to put the oil catchcans. I’m following the PCV article on here, adding the recommended two cans: one between the PCV and the IM with an extra one way valve. The other between the VC breather and the turbo...
  27. Inherited Ride

Did a little over the weekend; moved the car out to the driveway so I can wash it. It's very dusty. And because I had it backed into the garage, the passenger side was close to the garage wall. I forgot that about 8 years ago, someone scraped down the passenger side when backing out of the...
  28. WTB: 92 Talon window trim

Reply to question by 'arfbarkyPrime' on the classified ad 'WTB: 92 Talon window trim'

Will it be exactly the same piece on the Eclipse and Laser?
  29. 1G Check my ECU

Thanks that would help, sure!In light of not having the extra ECU now, I’m going to slow down and just focus on what is. Finish the idle surge problem (going to take apart and clean the TB first) and install the catch cans. Take car of the cosmetics I want to hit and then we’ll see. Maybe I’ll...
  30. 1G Check my ECU

Yup, as I now take a much more critical look at the neighborhood, see photo. I can also see some goo under orange components too but the heatsink is in the way.

Wanted 1g WTB: 92 Talon window trim

I am looking for this piece of trim; it goes across the top of the rear hatch. Anybody with parts cars that might be willing to part with this?
  32. 1G Check my ECU

As part of the inherited Talon, I’ve found parts around the house and basement, etc.I found an extra ECU (MD165531) and I intend to use this one for ECMlink and pull out the one on the car that has the old school Todd Day “mods” along with the original Super AFC.As I was socketing the extra...
  33. Inherited Ride

I have a 2003 Tundra AND a 2005 Sequoia .... a couple months ago, my 10 yo son was with me filling up the Sequoia, and I left it pumping while I ran into the little store. When I got back in the truck he's like "THAT GAS COST $100!!!!" .... lol, yup!I'm thinking about gluing on short threaded...
  34. Inherited Ride

Could be, I remember being told "Todd Day's modifications" to the ECU.
  35. Inherited Ride

Today I made progress on an idle surge following steps in Terry's Talon Troubleshooting document; I was able to get the base idle down to 750 using the BISS with screw turns to spare. Though it sounds like the real culprit is still somewhere, so I'll keep working on it. I have an ECU swap coming...
  36. 1G Where to start?

Yes I forgot to mention I did reconnect the switch, surging remained gone. The connector boot for that is totally hard and crumbling, what do people do about that?I will try the steering wheel tomorrow; I don't think the AC button will do anything, I think AC was removed? I know the driver's...
  37. 1G Where to start?

I discovered Terrys Talon Troubleshooting page for idle surge. I started following those items.Disconnecting the idle switch made it stop surging but then it was idling at like 2300. I pulled off the vacuum lines at the TB one at a time and blocked the nipple, but that didn’t change anything...
  38. 1G Where to start?

Oh and I think the car is running rich. My sweatshirt has a pretty strong exhaust smell.
  39. 1G Where to start?

Started the car again today and within just a few minutes, it started idle surging.Initial idle when starting it cold is about 1200 RPM, and the gauge hovers at about -17. When the surging starts, the gauge goes back to about -14 or -15.The car didn't do this when it was parked, so surely...
  40. 1G Where to start?

Thanks for the info; hopefully this week I'll roll it out of the garage and down the street a bit. Probably a good idea to change the oil before I do though.
  41. Any shops in SE Michigan for DSMs?

Thanks for all the insight, excellent info there. Paw Paw in 2+ hours in the western direction from me. I'll reach out to Buschur first for the work, then go from there. Thanks!
  42. Any shops in SE Michigan for DSMs?

I suppose that's not a bad idea; I just socketed a spare ECU, so now I can get ECMlink installed and then I could have them tune it at the same time. In 2011, I trailered the car down to Shep for the timing belt which is a whole lot further. I think she knew David personally, the car has some of...
  43. Any shops in SE Michigan for DSMs?

Are there any shops in SE Michigan that have DSM experience? I need to get the timing belt done on a 1g, and I don't have the expertise or the time to do it myself. If I had just one of those, I'd do it myself but I want to get it done quick rather than have the car sit for another long period...
  44. 1Gb Talon Rust Revival

Maybe you are going to cover this next, but how did you fix the little screw standoffs on the back of the controls plate for the door panel? I took mine apart and every single one of them are broken and the PO tried to keep it together with hot glue. Didn't work.
  45. Inherited Ride

Thanks for the tip! I don't trust myself down in that tiny space with a torch, what with all the other stuff all around. I'm sure the crimping will be completely fine, I got a ratcheting one and some high quality connectors to match.
  46. 1G Where to start?

But then, that abruptly stopped and the engine sounding fine again.Though 5 minutes later, it started doing this:I kind of let it do that for awhile, trying to decide if it was getting worse over time and was going to stall. But it didn't. So I shut the engine off, waited 30 seconds, then...
  47. 1G Where to start?

The answer is now yes!I finished up the wiring problems and installed the battery today. Then I visually checked the timing belt, to my eyes it looks brand new.So I finished putting the knee plate back up, hopped in and crossed my fingers. In no more than 6 seconds of cranking, it fired...
  48. Inherited Ride

I finally got started!First things first, the battery. I went and got a new Interstate battery from Costco. But before installing it, I decided I had to rip out that Viper alarm. That thing was always a pain in the butt. It constantly drained the battery, so when the car was sitting for a...
  49. Inherited Ride

Well, I finally got started .... I posted this history elsewhere, but I'll put it here. This was my wife's 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD which she bought from the original owner in 1997. Other than having a Viper alarm system installed, the original owner left it completely stock. As the car is now...
