Oh... if that's true then I did a lot of research for no reason lol. I know the intake ports are very different on the 6 and 7 bolt heads, I thought that applied to the exhaust ports too.
I've been running an FP exhaust manifold on my 2G 7-bolt head to my e3 16g turbo for a few years now and it's ran great, but a question occurred to me recently. The FP manifold is compatible with both 6 and 7 bolt heads, so obviously the ports on the manifold are made bigger to match the...
It looks like the one you circled in green attaches to the bolt on the negative battery terminal, then the one I circled in blue might go to the trans/starter?
Yeah your car probably has older AC Autotechnic gauges or at least had them at some point. There are forums talking about these gauges on this site dating back to at least 2003. Glad to hear that it's just reside on the wire and not burn marks! I'm curious where that 4 wire cable goes since it...
If I remember correctly I believe that solid blue wire is the ACC wire, so it only has power when the ignition switch is in ACC or ON position. So that switch would only work with the car turned on. My only guess would maybe be a turbo timer? What's confusing me is that the red spliced wire...
If you deleted your emissions then there's no use for them. Cap them off or plug them up somehow or you'll have a good sized vacuum leak. All 3 of mine are capped off and it runs perfectly fine. You said the nipples are broken off, if that's the case then yes just weld them shut to seal it up.
I agree with everyone else that this seems like an electrical issue with the random misfires but only under load and it affects the tach. How are you measuring the voltage? Are you only measuring it when it's sitting still? I'm wondering if the alternator isn't sensing the increased electrical...
Just wanted to post an update since I haven't in a few years. I still have the car and it's still going strong. I just made the trip from California to Ohio and it ran perfectly, making the 2250 mile trip in just 38 hours. This car has now driven across the country twice so yes, DSM's can be...
I have a '98 GSX and I love it, but it's getting very hard to find factory parts anymore. My rear suspension is shot and I need to go through and replace most of the rubber bushings. The main issue is finding rubber bushings to replace the 3 worn ones on the knuckle. Every thread I found...
I agree with everyone about doing the maintenance first then following the upgrade path. Also the best investment you can make is ecmlink, especially if you're planning on upgrading
What do you mean by this? Does the engine seize because there's no oil? And I have the same question of how you're measuring the oil pressure. If you're using the factory gauge, that's not very reliable. I've had a bad electrical connection before on that gauge and it would zero out sometimes...
True lol but since it was cylinders 2 and 3, the obvious first thought is a bad coil, but just a possibility it could be a headgasket blown between the cylinders.
You are indeed correct. I did a compression test and cylinders 2 and 3 are less than 20 psi, where 1 is 165psi and 4 is 185psi. I even shined a light into cylinder 3, then used a borescope camera in cylinder 2 and could see the light from the other cylinder. It's unfortunate since the head was...
Hello all. I've been trying to diagnose my car for 2 days now and reading through all the forums I can find, but I'm running out of ideas. I apologize in advance for the long post, but here's what happened:I'm driving my 98 GSX like any other day, then one day at a stop light I noticed the...
I'm surprised no one is really talking about this build on the forums. They're just about done and heading to SEMA soon. It's cool seeing the eclipse get some love on a more mainstream channel
Oh well it's still a win haha. I have Tein coiovers that are only about 2 years old so they're unlikely to be bad, but I'll check there next if the noise persists after changing the upper control arms.Side note, are those 2 bushings on the upper control arm called tophats or did I just...
We have a winner here, I believe it is the front-most top hat bushing. It wouldn't make any noise when I shook the wheel on jack stands, but when I grabbed the upper control arm directly and put some weight behind it, it moved around and made a clunking noise. I'm going to order a new moog upper...
Hello all, this feels like a noob question as opposed to a handling tech question so I'll post it here.My drivers side front wheel is making a worrying noise that is especially apparent when I'm making right turns and going over a rough surface. The best way I can describe it is a clunking...
Hello all, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean from the title. Here's a fun topic, what are some ridiculous things you've found on your car that the previous owner left for you?I've owned my car for over 3 years and driven it across the country. Just today my front half shaft fell and...
Nothing major since then, just minor things like slotted and drilled rotors and painted brake calipers. I've been saving up to do some major mods soon though. My next project is the cooling system with a Mishimoto X-Line radiator, 2 Spal pusher fans on the condensor to replace the factory fans...
I've liked the Lexus LS500 ever since it came out but just recently learned of an exclusive color called Structural Blue. Good grief this paint is gorgeous. Lexus spent 15 years perfecting this paint apparently and now all I can think of is how I can get my hands on it to paint my 2G. I painted...
My 4-wire alternator connector broke and won't lock into place anymore, so it's time for a new one. I looked at all the places selling the connector online, and found a few on ebay. It came in the mail, but in the pigtails all 4 wires are the same gauge as opposed to the factory wires where 2...
Wow a lot of good information here, thank you everyone for the replies! I was tired when I was taking the car apart and didn't even think about pulling the timing belt and spinning the oil pump with a drill, but thats a great idea. Also i like the castle plug idea, a quick way to check it...
That's a very helpful video, I wish i had found that before I did the bse. I have the correct stub shaft with the oil groove in it, however i didn't use threadlocker... also i don't know if I used enough grease in the right areas. Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and get a new front case and...
I left the front shaft in and just took the belt off, but replaced the rear balance shaft with the stubby shaft. It's a good one too from stmtuned, not an ebay one
Please excuse the long post. This is a bit of a newbie question, but I did a balance shaft delete about 300 miles ago and the engine seems to be making a lot more noise than it should be. Here's the details:Balance shaft belt broke and threw the timing, had the head rebuilt because of bent...
I did it myself while doing the timing belt change. The balance belt actually broke once before but didn't take out the timing, it was probably just an old belt though as I'm not sure when it was last replaced (the car had around 170,000 miles). So I did all the timing stuff as well as the...
That's a good idea, i hadn't thought of that. Does it help smooth out the vibrations at idle and 4000rpm? I assume the factory harmonic balancer is designed with the balance shafts in mind, but a fluidampr works at all frequencies
You're probably right, I'm way over thinking this. It's just frustrating when I changed the belt 4000 miles ago and it breaks somehow. It was a gates belt, but the outer side of the belt sheared off and that's what got caught in the belt. The weird thing is I can still spin the balance shaft by...
Those are all good points and good things to think about. Since the metal would be so thin you're probably right about it not holding the belt if it breaks, it may likely just bend and hit the timing belt. It is definitely tightly packed in that area so i knew it would be a challenge to fit...
I just finished rebuilding my engine after the balance shaft belt broke, taking out my timing. I didn't have a way to pull the engine block so I decided to install the BSE kit and leave the front shaft in with no belt. I gotta say, I'm not a fan of the vibration. Some say they didn't notice a...
I finally finished the head install and it's running perfectly, like it's brand new. There was excessive lifter tick when I first started the car, but it went away after about a half an hour of driving. I forgot to take pictures of the rebuilt head before install, but it looked prefect with both...
Yes thats the exact kit I got. As you said, theres no need for the more expensive OEM bearings if you're going for the delete. This is all good information though
Okay good to know. Just to satisfy my curiosity, if I were keeping the balance shafts, would the rust be a concern? If I'm correct in how the bearing works, the bearing itself doesn't spin, right? The balance shaft just spins inside it. So theoretically if the inside surface is good then isn't...
Just an update, I got the head back a week ago but have yet to install it. I have been waiting on parts from stmtuned, they have been significantly delayed recently. Overall good experience at TEM. Only a few delays, but it was to be expected during this covid-19 season. Here was my price...
Hello all, just a quick question here. I ordered the balance shaft delete kit from stmtuned, but all 3 bearings have very visible surface rust on the outside, is this a problem? I can't feel it when i run my finger over it but thought I would ask some dsm experts. I don't want to install it only...
That looks really good! I may have to go that route in the future.I ended up going with the Megan FWD polyurethane rear toe arms and just adding some washers. One issue I've had is that the adjustment nuts came loose after having it aligned, and again then after tightening them myself. I've...
Yeah I'll share this here so others can see. I believe I talked to Rich on the phone, he said it's $455 to blueprint an engine, before parts. If you want oversized valves then it's only an extra $40 total. I'll have a finalized price once I bring in the head next week, I'm probably going to have...
Thank you all for the input. Just an update, I've called around and got quotes from different places as well as discussed the work. TEM machine shop in NAPA seemed the most confident over the phone and knew exactly what they were talking about, and quoted me a fair price. Its a bit of a drive...
Thank you for the advice, I'll definitely keep them in mind. But yes if anybody knows a good shop closer to Sacramento then please let me know. I'm trying to go on Tuesday
Sorry I should've been more specific. When I say head work, I will take the head off my car myself and bring it in. I'm mostly looking to replace bent valves, guides and valve stem seals. Probably going to have the head surfaced while it's there, but no major machine work. I'll definitely look...
Just recently moved to the area and need to get some head work done but can't travel too far, anybody know of any good shops in the Sac/Roseville area? Preferably one that has a good reputation with 4g63s
Hello all, I have a bit of a situation. I was driving my 98 GSX (6 bolt bottom end), doing a moderate pull at maybe 10psi max, when suddenly something happened and the car started vibrating an unusual amount. I think there was a pop or similar sound but I can't quite recall. The engine is still...
