I too live in Cali and run a 3in catback exhaust. Eventually I will run a 3in turbo back exhaust and keep the exhaust I have now for smog every 2 years. For your goals I think 2.5 will be fine. If you keep your exhaust from turbo to cat then add a 3in catback you would be fine.
Yeah it's not cosmetic it's called cometic head gasket. Basically it's a multi layered steel gasket and if someone didn't deck the head or block right last time and used this gasket I can see it blowing it. But yeah go through what bogussvo said and see what issues you find.

Yeah they sound better with the equal length exhaust manifolds. Before I got my gsx I was looking at the wrx as well and well for a quarter of the price I got awd and a fun turbo car. Plus so much easier to work on the eclipse. That was a big plus for me.
Like everyone else said check your manifold bolts and turbo bolts and a boost leak test. An exhaust leak can cause a slower spool and a boost leak will cause it to not hold its pressure. Also is your turbo stock or which one do you have?

Yeah sounds like a glazed over clutch. I haven't used centerforce in really long time but I've heard good things about the act 2600 clutch. My clutch is shot as well and I will be getting the act 2600 with oem throw out bearing and pivot ball.
