Thanks for the tips guys. It was the idle air control valve. Ended up replacing it and everything is working fine again.

1G Strange idle issue, need some guidance

Hey guys, So I was working on the talon a bit today, and I saw that the idle stop switch was not plugged in. It's likely been unplugged since I got the car, I haven't really spent a lot of time on it yet and only drove it ~400 miles total. Strange thing is, I never noticed the car having any...

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

The top motor mount and one of the tranny mounts were replaced, no word if they were poly but I'll look. Just an interesting development. I'm still planning on pulling the timing cover off, lining up TDC and checking for the rear balance shaft setting through the inspection port.

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Called the shop did the repair, he said he pulled the original belt off the car and kept the timing the way it was from the factory once aligned to TDC. Said he's owned 5 DSMs and is familiar with the oil sprocket/rear balance shaft and although he didn't check specifically, the only way the...

Anyone around? Could use some help with my car

Hey guys, just grabbed my first dsm and I'm going to have to adjust some timing issues. Anyone still around? I'm in Monterey but looking for help in the bay area, possibly this weekend. Thanks!

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Just bought the tensioner tool from extremepsi, as well as a new balance shaft belt in case that wasn't changed. I don't plan on pulling the crank pulley, I've read that you can cut the old balance shaft belt off and basically rotate the new one on vice pulling the pulley off.

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

When it comes to removing the T-belt, since I don't have to change anything out, and I able to just loosen the belt via putting a 1/2" drive into the tensioner? Ideally I just line up TDC, zip-tie the belt to the cams to hold position (assuming that's also correct), then push the belt off by...

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Adding this interesting post I found to help me reference when I'm doing the repair:"hey im not sure exactly what your talking about but if you mean your trying to align your oil pump with the timing marks this is how you do it.1. there is a bolt on the side of the engine towards the...

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Well then god damn lol. So what's my easiest approach here? Zip tie the belt to the cams at TDC then rotate the oil pump sprocket? I know there's no way to fix it without basically doing the belt but I don't need to pull the belt off completely. Any tips to do it easier and safely would be...

    Let's hear your automotive confessions!

Cracked the valvecover on my MR2 turbo as well. Stupidly easy though, basically you shouldn't even use a wrench, just a screwdriver with a 10mm attached.

I ran my old EVO X for about 10 minutes after changing the oil, without the oil cap.. other than the mess, it was fine. Doh.

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Someone said that when their rear balance shaft was 180 degree out of phase they were snapping bolts on the drivetrain from it shaking so badly. Mine doesn't shake or move, just a buzzing type vibration which is really only felt in 1-3rd gear.

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Thanks, I'm starting to think the same. I had it on the freeway today, stayed in 4th, and went from 3 to 4k slowly. I feel like balance shafts out-of-timing would feel way worse than how the motor feels, it's more of a "buzz" then a shake if that makes sense. I also confirmed that the shifter...

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Good points. One of the biggest issues is I bought it from the son after his father passed away. It was taken to a shop and had various things, like the timing belt and tensioners done, but the person I purchased it from doesn't know anything about DSMs. The father kept it 100% stock, so I'd...

1G Concerned about repair work done prior to purchase, need advice

Issue needing advice: Feeling some vibration in the shifter in the common 3-5k range, no noticeable shaking of the engine or drivetrain.Concerns: I just purchased the car and the previous owner said the timing belt was done recently. I inspected the belt and it does appear to have been done...

ECMlink Bonehead mistake, hoping for the best, Please help...

If all your other wires readings are SAT I'd say you have no issue with them. Totally normal to fully rely on the resistance readings for wire continuity in areas where physical inspection is tedious or impossible without tearing down the machine. I'd feel like you though, I'd want to know...

How many of us use our DSMs as actual daily cars? Or how many own just a DSM?

Right now the only vehicles I own are my Talon, my motorcycle, and my 1993 RX-7. My 1991 Toyota Soarer lands in Cali on March 9th so that will take over daily driving duties once it's registered.

    GS into GSX swap

Are you dead set on doing this? If you have a budget of up to 25k, why not just buy a GSX/TSi to start with? If it's for some mechanical achievement then I understand your intent, but if it's just because you found this car hold off and find something better IMHO.

    Too Much Red DSM

First problem encountered, seems that the oil filter is backing off (likely due to the 24mm bolt). I'll be changing the oil this weekend and applying some loctite to the bolt, and torquing it back to factory spec. Hopefully this will stop from me leaking oil from the filter housing and my filter...

New owner of 92 Talon TSI

Just picked up a 92 Talon TSI AWD, original, 86k miles unmodified. It's a burgundy outside with the red interior model, 5 speed. Looking forward to it getting here, I'll take some pics of it when it arrives. Supposedly has a new timing belt, tensioners, and water pump as well, so that should be...
