My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

I was wondering what happened to my old dsm the other day, the last time I saw it was almost 2 years ago and I knew it had changed hands a few times. I figured it was probably parted out or parked in the dirt somewhere like so many project cars end up. So it was a huge surprise when I saw it on...

Man he only put 1250 miles on it!? Was really cool to see you driving it around. Would be great if you kept this build thread alive with whatever changes you make to the car!

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

What's up guys, unfortunately this will probably be my last update to this thread. I made the decision to sell my car (along with the rest of my stuff) and leave the country to do some traveling. The car went to a great home and I told the new owner he is welcome to continue to update this...

Good info here, thanks for the reply.Fixed it guys! Turned out to be the map sensor. Funny how the almost new gm part is what broke and left me stranded LOL

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

Thank you, thats exactly what i wanted to hear.I checked the tank when i replaced the fuel strainer. I didn't see any sediment at all. And will do on that profile.Ok, now correct me if i'm wrong, but i think map sensors measure barometric pressure as 0. So altitude changes should have a very...

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

After taking a closer look at my latest logs i noticed something different with my map sensor.. With the car off, it reads between 14 and 16 in/hg. This is very similar to how it reads with the car on. I compared it to some of my older logs, and the map used to read almost 0 (+/- .3) in/hg when...

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

Nope, no luck with the cas.I got new plugs and wires and borrowed a buddies known good coil pack. No luck with that either. Starting to think maybe map sensor? (Car is running speed density)

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

1g's don't have a cps, just a cam angle sensor. Which i already replaced. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

There's no keeping it running.. If wants to stall out it stalls out. I suppose i could take a log but there's really not much to see. All logged values look normal.I installed some known good 450's in place of my fic 1050's and replaced the fuel strainer and its doing exactly the same thing...

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

Think i may have found the culprit.. Pulled the fuel rail and immediately after removing the first fitting a ton of sediment came out. Next i put the fuel feed line (from the filter) in a bottle and activated the fuel pump. Once again i could see sediment in the bottle. Is a 10 micron filter not...

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

Pulled the plugs tonight... 2,3 and 4 all looked lean while #1 was black and wet with fuel. So either #2-4 aren't getting fuel or #1 isnt getting spark (which might explain why i was having so much trouble setting base timing). Also pulled the ecu on the off chance that the caps went bad...

Resolved Starts but dies when warm. Non responsive to throttle input

Whats up tuners, once again i'm having a problem that's left me stumped. I was on my way to a restaurant and everything seemed normal. The car was running fine and not giving me any issues at all. Then seemingly out of nowhere, the car died. I tried starting it and it fired up but immediately...

    Tial Q BOV strange issue.....

I bought a tial bov flange from treadstone as well.. Mine had the same issue. I emailed them and they said it looked fine, and that all tial vband clamps were a tight fit. I was only able to get it to work properly by using a longer bolt.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

I had to roll the front fenders in order to make room for these 245's. Im still not sold on these wider tires though, they are a very tight fit for a gain of only 10mm in width.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

So i heard an unnerving scraping from my front brakes after about 500 miles on the new motor. In all fairness, a lot of those miles were "spirited' to say the least. I figured that was as good an excuse as any to upgrade to big brakes. These wilwood 6 pistons have probably been around for 10+...

    Tial F38 boost creep?

The wastegate hole in the turbine housing is still smaller than the 38mm wastegate even after porting. Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldnt that still be the choke point? I could see having a larger wastegate make a difference if it were off the manifold, but not sure about off the o2 housing...

    Tial F38 boost creep?

I bought it new like a year ago. I'll pull the gate off and make sure its opening all the way tonight. I guess it couldn't hurt to do another boost leak test either since i have changed a few things.
  24. Smilinjay

    Tial F38 boost creep?

No one has had similar issues? I pulled apart the wastegate and verified that it does have a 14 psi spring. I also replaced my leaky stock bov with a new one and the creep got much worse. Now seeing nearly 30 psi at wot.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Long time no update... It has certainly kept me busy with working through problems. Everything from lean conditions, to running hot, to boost creep. Anyway here's some progress. Its getting there. Made some new brackets to mount my catch can next to the coolant overflow. Took the bumper off...

    Tial 38mm WG question

External wastegates work more or less in the reverse of internal wastegates. So while what you said would be true for an internal wg, it is pretty much the opposite for ewg. Inside an ewg there is a diaphragm, with one boost port on the top and one on the bottom. I have a 1 bar spring in my...
  28. Smilinjay

    Tial 38mm WG question

Your friend is right. The bottom port will push up on the diaphragm to open the wastegate at lower boost, and the top port will assist the spring in keeping the wastegate closed at boost higher than what the spring is rated at. For instance, if you have a 10 psi, spring it will open at 20 psi...

    Tial F38 boost creep?

Whats up guys, I've been having an ongoing boost creep issue with my 2 bolt style tial 33mm ewg. It has a 1 bar spring (thats what i ordered, haven't opened the wastegate to confirm) and the boost signal is sourced from my lower intercooler pipe. The turbo is a tdo6 20g with billet ett...

1G Are these really 1g radiator hoses?

They both look fine to me. They don't quite follow the factory shape but they should work just fine when cut to size.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Thank you sir! Very nice and practical solution to the 90's incredibly stupid coil pack setup. In my case im fairly certain the tach interface itself was the issue. Otherwise i probably would have just wired in some newer coils.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Finally got a new coil pack. Made a world of difference. No more misfires or dropping 2 cylinders, even seems to run better at idle. So far the car is running amazing! It is still in the early stages of being remote tuned, but i am very pleased after the first real drive. One thing...

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

First drive today! Started out well, the car was running great and pulls nicely through the power band, and the galant transmission feels fantastic. Unfortunately after just 2 miles i ran into an issue that has plagued me for a long time. The car misfired mid pull, dropped 2 cylinders, and threw...

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

I haven't been driving the car due to bad weather, but this gave me a chance to work through some minor issues and do some finishing touches. Had some issues with my pusher fans, should be sorted now. Also made a new gauge bezel to replace the crappy plastic one i made last year. And...

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

So i got the car running this week. So far i have 35-40 min of run time on it and it seems healthy! Oil pressure is very good and after adjusting the cas and biss it ran very smooth. I did find some very small particles of metal dust in the oil. So i cut open the filter and found practically...

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Whats up guys, just wanted to give a quick update on my most recent project. built motor decision

More importantly, who were these motors built by? A stock motor is miles ahead of a poorly assembled built motor. It would be wise to pull the oil pan and check the bearings. If everything checks out then #1 is a much better deal imho.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Ahaha im terrible with questions like that.. Theres really not much work left, but the roads here are pretty crappy right now. Ideally i would like some dry roads to break it in but im not sure when thats going to happen.

Its been a while! I got pretty busy through the holidays and have not gotten as much done as i would have hoped, but heres the progress none the less.I ran the alternator and gauge wiring out of sight under the chassis leg Cas and tps wiring extended to reach with how i routed my wiring...

    1G Which oil pump

I ordered an acl oil pump from real street a couple months back for like $79 (it seems they changed their price to compete with other vendors now though). I have not fired my car up yet but the quality seems exceptional. At least as good as the oem pump. It came with the gears installed and all...

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

I've been too busy lately to make much progress but i did get the transmission in. Ran into a few snags but everything turned out fine in the end. It seems like the new trans should shift perfectly with minor adjustment of my stock shifter cables.

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Yea we'll see how it holds up. Any idea how much weaker it is? I figured it's pretty close to a wash but I guess we'll find out. My main reason for the transmission change is my stock trans had the typical worn 2nd gear syncro. It was fine under normal driving conditions, but granny shifting...

My 1g DSM story: 1990 Tsi awd clean street machine

Thanks for the kind words.. As for the exhuast, i built it off the car so i made it longer than necessary with the intention of cutting it down once i got the fitment right. The car hasnt even left the garage yet due to the bearing failure.
