I'd go with link as your first step for upgrades. Then wideband, boost gauge, maybe water temp or oil temp or egt for now until you decide what else you want. Those will be essential parts to your build though. I've had the 3 gauge pillar pod in the past, it's nice to have as long as your gauges...
If you still haven't even gotten the car yet, you are getting way ahead of yourself. You will need to be putting your time and some money into maintenance first. Iso recommend changing all the fluids, filters, and belts as a start for your project. Like you said, you need it to be reliable...
dsmlink would be a great first mod. It sounds like you have a little bit of an idea of what you want out of the car, and if you plan on getting it in the future anyways. Why wait to read about it? You can always start right now.
Update
AC is fixed. The cable by the ecu needed adjusting.
Still have the idle problem. My idle is still a little rough and drops when a load like my AC is applied. I checked my iac/isc and it checks good. I also got abrand new one and replaced it to see if it was bad even with proper resistance...
Hey everyone, there's going to be a meet this weekend on Saturday the 29th. We are trying to get as many dsms out there as possible. We do have a Facebook page if you aren't on there already. The meet is planned for 8 pm but we might meet up earlier to cruise over as a group. Please let me know...
Okay, I think the weird ticking noise is my pcv. Someone told me since my idle is jumpy it is the ball(?) on the inside to let air out and not in going back and forth due to the idle. I'm going to test my iac to see if that could be an issue, and also a blt. Also, my ac is no longer blowing cold...
Yes, I still have my balance shafts.
Also, there is a weird noise around the intake manifold every 3 minutes or so with the car off. I'll post the video soon.
Okay, so checked out the car in a dark garage. Wasn't able to see any kind of arcing. I took out one of the spark plugs, and the top seemed a little loose. I'm going to replace them today to see if that fixes or changes anything. I will keep you updated. Also, if any other ideas come to mind...
Okay, got it started and the timing belt replaced. Replaced the cas which now it starts.
While it is running, it is running rough, rougher than before it died. No belts were snapped, and it was off maybe 1 or 2 teeth in timing. There is some weird noises, almost like uncontrolled sparking like...
Update on the talon. It isn't getting a spark and isn't getting fuel. Fuel goes to the rail, then no further. Also my timing belt is a bit shredded in a spot about 8 inches long and 1/4 inch wide on the side, but still together. Didn't notice the first time looking until I cranked it a few times...
Thank you for all your help! I'll be diving into that first thing tomorrow (today I have to go grocery shopping and get my breakfast meals ready for the week, along with my lunch for tomorrow). I do have a 1/4 socket set, so hopefully I can get this thing done with little hassle. Also, my wife...
Yes it was replaced. I'll give it another look today, but yesterday at first glance they seemed okay.Checked the belts, everything seemed tight and just fine.
Hi, today in the parking lot at work, I noticed a ticking noise when I started my car. It sounds like its coming the timing belt area. I live about 25 minutes away from work, and the car made it almost all the way until I pulled into my neighborhood and then it died on me. It will crank but...
Yes if you don't mind letting me know what the problem was. I recently am getting a ticking around the belt area, sounding like metal is hitting something, but my car actually died on the way home and now it's down until I can figure this out.
Okay thank you for the responses guys. Sorry it took so long for me to reply, because I just recently ran into another problem with the car. Will do some research and there may possibly be another post here soon.
Hey so I recently bought a black box ecu for my tsi awd. It came from a 98 gsx. I swapped it and then received a check engine light . Evap code. Swapped it back to my old ecu, no cel. Could one ecu be bad?

Hey, this may sound noobish, but where is this plug listed as step one? Searched forever and could not find it.
A video of someone showing me would be very helpful if they don't kind. The picture didn't do me much good. 97 tsi awd stock
@AWDPetmitsu She didn't like sitting on the seats for 65 hours lol. The seats aren't very comfy so next time we make a drive like that she will have an extra cushion. Also, she agrees that it is better for the car if we can just ship it and put the miles on the Uhaul instead.
Okay finally made it to Jacksonville fl! Only had one thing break on the trip, the support (I think) under the driver side window buttons. The buttons work but fall down into the pocket a little bit. I'll need to give it a look soon. Other than that the car made it just fine.
@Morecowbell we...
Yes a blanket was brought along. It came in use as a pillow more than a blanket.
We are taking 10, but we have quite a few detours along the way to see things. Well I think we are going 10 anyway. Right now in San francisco with no problems!
You can make a tester and find your leaks easily in a day, as long as you have the correct tools to make it. Or if you're lucky, a local dsm group might have one laying around to lend you. Or local car group I general.
It sounds like a sweet deal to me for that price. $300 and a xbox? I don't like xboxs and actually don't play very many video games so I would jump on it. But who knows what all that could be wrong with it. Ifor you're willing and able to fix it, I'd do it. Pics if you get a chance
Make sure you don't rush into any cars, I'd suggest that you look for a good one that is close to exactly what you want. Or if you see one withat a great deal and needs a little work, and are willing to work on it, get it. Good luck with the search! I'll also be keeping my eyes open for you.
ROFL I was actually going to ask you to check that. I set one of my old friends lower to mess with him one day and he freaked out lol and had to tell him I just changed it in his link.
I can only hope our trip goes as well as your trip did! She has us taking a route south through cali them east through the lower united states with a lot of stops for sight seeing lol. I'm getting a little excited for the trip to be honest. The spare is something I will be needing to pick up, I...
So I talked it over with the wife, and she wants to drive. She has it planned out to where we will be hitting a lot of spots on the way that we won't have the chance to see any time soon, and also family along the way. So it looks like I'll be doing all this extra caution maintenance !
300hp won't be enough for long. When I went from my modded talon to my stock talon, I'd go a little crazy with the power difference. Once you get a taste of power, you will want more.
